Overview

This document serves as an owner's guide for the Doughboy Powerline XP II Swimming Pool Pump, available in a black color model. It details the pump's function, usage, and maintenance, including specific instructions for models with different cord lengths and GFCI protection.

The Powerline XP II pump is designed for filtering swimming pool water and comes equipped with an automatic timer. Depending on the model, it is supplied with either a 3-foot, 6-foot, or 25-foot electrical cord. The 25-foot cord models include a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) for enhanced safety, while the 6-foot cord models feature a 3-pronged plug and require GFCI protection at the receptacle. The 3-foot cord models are also designed to be connected to a GFCI-protected receptacle and feature a 3-prong flanged, twist-lock plug.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Powerline XP II pump is to circulate and filter swimming pool water. When part of a complete filtration system, it works in conjunction with a filter to remove impurities from the pool. The pump's automatic timer allows for scheduled operation, ensuring efficient and consistent water circulation without constant manual intervention.

Usage Features:

The pump offers three modes of operation: "OFF," "AUTO," and "CONT" (Continuous).

  • AUTO Mode: This is the primary mode for scheduled operation. Users can select a run time of 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 hours. The timer operates on a 24-hour cycle, starting when the timer knob is turned from "OFF" to the desired run length. Once set, the pump will run for the selected duration and then automatically shut off. It will then restart automatically 24 hours from the initial "start" time each day. For example, if set at 8:00 a.m. for 6 hours, it will run until 2:00 p.m. and then restart at 8:00 a.m. the following day.
  • CONT Mode: This mode allows the pump to run continuously, which is useful for tasks such as vacuuming the pool or when extended filtration is needed beyond the automatic timer settings.
  • OFF Mode: This mode cuts power to the motor. Selecting "OFF" will reset the "start" time or the previously selected cycle in AUTO mode.

Changing Run Time: To change the length of time the pump runs in AUTO mode, simply turn the timer knob to the new desired hour selection. There is no need to switch the pump off first. If the pump is currently running and the new run time is shorter, it will shut off according to the new selection. If the new run time is longer, it will continue running and shut off at the new selected length of time. If the pump is not running in AUTO mode, the new run time will take effect the following day at the regular start time.

Changing Start Time: To change the time the pump starts in AUTO mode, first switch the timer knob to "OFF," then turn it back to the desired start time. A minimum wait of 30 seconds between turning the pump "OFF" and back on is recommended.

Power Interruption: In the event of a power failure, the timer will behave as if it was turned "OFF" and then back on when power is restored. In AUTO mode, the pump will resume its cycle when power is restored, but the "start" time will need to be manually reset by turning the timer "OFF" and then back on at the desired "start" time.

Safety Precautions:

  • GFCI Protection: All models require connection to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protected receptacle to reduce the risk of electric shock. For models with a 25-foot cord, the GFCI is integrated into the cord. For other models, the receptacle itself must be GFCI protected.
  • Cord Placement: The electrical cord should not be buried and should be located to minimize abuse from lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, and other equipment.
  • Extension Cords: Extension cords should not be used to connect the unit to the electrical supply. A properly located outlet should be provided.
  • Children: Children should not be permitted to use the product unless closely supervised. The filter and pump should be installed a minimum of 6 feet from the pool wall to prevent their use as steps.
  • Pool Type: Specific models are designated for either "storable pools" (which can be readily disassembled for storage) or "permanently installed pools" (constructed in or on the ground or in a building). It is crucial to use the correct pump type for your pool.
  • Installation: For filtration systems, the filter and pump foundation should be prepared using patio blocks and a level to prevent motor overheating and voiding the warranty.
  • Electrical Contractor: For models requiring specific receptacle installations or longer runs, a qualified electrical contractor should be consulted to ensure compliance with electrical codes.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning Strainer Basket:
    1. Stop the pump.
    2. Close off water flow from the pool by inserting a winterizing disk or stuffing a rag into the return fitting.
    3. Remove the skimmer basket and stuff a rag into the bottom of the skimmer outlet port.
    4. Remove the strainer pot lid, lift out the basket, and clean it thoroughly.
    5. When replacing the basket, align the notch in the basket with the rib in the strainer pot.
    6. Clean and lubricate the O-ring under the strainer cover with a non-petroleum lubricant recommended for A.B.S., Noryl, and Acrylic plastics. Consult your pool dealer for lubricant selections.
    7. Replace the lid, remove the winterizing disk and/or rags, and replace the skimmer basket and lid. Hand-tighten the lid only.
  • Lubrication: Periodically lubricate the O-ring under the strainer cover with a non-petroleum lubricant.
  • Pre-Maintenance Disconnection: Always ensure the pump is disconnected from the electrical source before attempting any maintenance or repair work.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides comprehensive troubleshooting checklists for both pump and motor issues and automatic timer issues, outlining possible causes and remedies. These include checks for electrical connections, air in the pump, clogged lines, motor overheating, and defective components.

This guide emphasizes the importance of following all instructions and safety precautions to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Doughboy Powerline XP II Swimming Pool Pump.
