Overview

This document serves as a manual for Dutton-Lainson Company's DL600A, DL900A, DL1100A, and DL1300A series pulling winches. It provides essential information regarding their function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

These winches are designed for multi-purpose hauling and pulling operations. They are explicitly stated as NOT FOR MOVING HUMANS and are not recommended for lifting applications. For lifting tasks, a self-locking winch should be used instead. The winches generate high forces during operation, necessitating careful adherence to instructions to prevent potential safety hazards. They are intended for operation with hand power only; any motorization is prohibited.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual details various specifications for each model, including rated capacity, gear ratios, and recommended cable dimensions:

  • Rated Capacities:

    • DL600A: 600 lbs (272 kg)
    • DL900A: 900 lbs (408 kg)
    • DL1100A: 1100 lbs (499 kg)
    • DL1300A: 1300 lbs (590 kg)
  • Gear Ratios:

    • DL600A: 3.2:1
    • DL900A: 3.2:1
    • DL1100A: 3.7:1
    • DL1300A: 4.4:1
  • Recommended Cable Dimensions:

    • DL600A: 5/32" x 61 ft (4 mm x 19.2 m)
    • DL900A: 3/16" x 40 ft (5 mm x 10.9 m)
    • DL1100A: 3/16" x 79 ft (5 mm x 22.2 m)
    • DL1300A: 7/32" x 56 ft (6 mm x 14.2 m)

The winch is rated with three layers of line on the hub. Using more layers or a larger hub increases the load on the winch, potentially exceeding its rated capacity.

Usage Features

The manual emphasizes several critical usage features and safety precautions:

  • Mounting: For maximum strength and safety, the winch should be mounted with three 3/8" or M10 bolts, washers, and lock washers. The bolt should be inserted through slots in both reel sideplates, with the nut on the gear side, tightened until snug with the bolt in the bottom slot next to the reel hub.
  • Winch Line Selection: The winch line should have a breaking strength at least 1.5 times the winch rating, and the hook should be 1.5 times stronger than the line. If steel cable is used, an optional reel with a large hub can extend cable life.
  • Cable Attachment: Cable or rope can be attached by methods described in a sketch (not provided in text). If a nylon strap is used, it should have a loop sewn in one end and be attached using a 3/8" x 3" bolt for DL1100A & DL1300A, or a 1/4" x 2-3/4" bolt for DL600A & DL900A, along with a locknut.
  • Operating Instructions:
    • The handle and nut must be tightened against the drive shaft before operation.
    • To wind the line, turn the winch handle clockwise with the ratchet lever in the "on" position. A loud, sharp clicking noise indicates proper ratchet operation.
    • Always ensure the ratchet lever is in the "on" position and holding the load before releasing the handle.
    • To unwind or reel out line, securely grip the winch handle and apply force in a clockwise direction to easily move the ratchet lever to the "off" position. Then, carefully turn the handle counterclockwise.
    • Never release the handle when the ratchet lever is in the unlocked position with a load on the winch, as the handle will spin violently, causing potential injury.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Maintain a firm grip on the winch handle at all times.
    • Check for proper ratchet operation before each use; do not use if damaged.
    • Never use the winch handle to pull or maneuver the entire trailer or equipment, nor against a locked ratchet.
    • Never exceed rated capacity.
    • Always keep at least three full turns of cable or rope on the reel.
    • Secure the load properly; do not depend on the winch to support the load once winching is complete.
    • If the winch cannot be cranked easily with one hand, it is likely overloaded.
    • Never allow children or unfamiliar individuals to operate the winch.

Maintenance Features

  • Lubrication: The winch is fully lubricated at the factory. For continued smooth performance and increased life, occasional greasing of gears and the reel shaft is recommended, along with an occasional drop of oil on the drive shaft bearings.
  • Inspection: Regular inspection is crucial. Damaged or severely worn parts must be repaired or replaced immediately to prevent dangers, personal injury, or property damage.

The document also includes a "DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY" stating that Dutton-Lainson Company manufactures and declares that the winch fulfills all relevant provisions of Directive 2006/42/EC.
