Overview

The Down And Out Mount is a specialized mounting system designed for flat panel televisions, allowing for versatile positioning and optimal viewing experiences. It is particularly useful for installations above fireplaces or in situations where a television needs to be moved up, down, and out from a wall.

Function Description

The primary function of the Down And Out Mount is to provide a secure and adjustable mounting solution for televisions, enabling them to be moved from a high, retracted position (e.g., above a fireplace mantel) to a lower, extended position for comfortable viewing. This movement is facilitated by a counterbalance system that helps manage the television's weight, making it easier to raise and lower. The mount also incorporates tilt adjustments, allowing users to achieve the desired viewing angle in both the top and bottom positions.

Usage Features

The mount offers several key usage features that enhance its functionality and user experience:

  • Versatile Positioning: The Down And Out Mount allows for a wide range of motion. In its "up" position, the television can be retracted close to the wall, often above a mantel, with a slight downward tilt. When moved to the "out" and "bottom" positions, the television extends away from the wall and can be lowered significantly, providing a more direct and comfortable viewing height. This flexibility is crucial for rooms with fireplaces or high mounting points where a fixed television position would be inconvenient.

  • Counterbalance System: A key feature is the adjustable counterbalance. This system is designed to offset the weight of the television, making it easier to move the mount up and down. Users can adjust the counterbalance force to match their television's weight, ensuring smooth and effortless operation. For lighter televisions, less counterbalance force is needed, while heavier televisions require more. The mount comes with the counterbalance set to maximum force, which needs to be adjusted for the specific television weight.

  • Tilt Adjustment: The mount provides tilt adjustment capabilities in both the top and bottom positions. In the top position, the mount can tilt up to 7 degrees from vertical. This tilt can be adjusted using a "Top Tilt Cam" and "Top Tilt Adjustment Bolt." For the bottom position, "Bottom Tilt Adjustment Bolts" and "Bottom Tilt Lock Nuts" allow for precise tilt settings. These adjustments ensure that the television can be angled for optimal viewing, reducing glare and improving comfort.

  • Secure Locking Mechanism: When the television is pushed all the way up, the mount features a locking mechanism that secures it in the top position. To unlock and move the television down, users simply pull out on the bottom of the television. This ensures stability and prevents accidental movement when the television is in its retracted state.

  • Wire Management: The mount includes wire routing holes and zip tie points to help organize and conceal cables. This feature contributes to a cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing installation by keeping wires tidy and out of sight. It's important to ensure enough slack in the wires to accommodate the full range of motion without pinching or rubbing.

  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes several safety precautions. It warns against exceeding the maximum load of 120 LBS and advises against using the mount for anything other than flat panel televisions. Users are also cautioned about potential heat damage from fireplaces, recommending against fires when electrical equipment is around. A critical instruction is not to move more than half of the TV below a mantel when mounted over a fireplace, to prevent damage.

  • Installation Guidance: The manual provides detailed instructions for attaching the mount to the wall and the television to the mount. It specifies the use of lag screws for wall attachment to standard 2x4 or larger wall studs spaced 16 inches apart. For attaching the television, it guides users on selecting appropriate screws and spacers to ensure proper thread engagement and prevent "bottoming out" the screws, which could damage the television.

Maintenance Features

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the Down And Out Mount, the manual outlines simple maintenance procedures:

  • Regular Movement: It is recommended to move the mount up and down at least twice a week. This action helps to keep the seals in the gas springs oiled, which is crucial for maintaining smooth operation and extending the life of the counterbalance system.

  • Joint Lubrication: All joints of the mount should be lubricated every 6 months. This helps to reduce friction, prevent wear, and ensure that the mount continues to move freely and quietly.

  • Bolt Inspection: Users are advised to visually check all bolts periodically to ensure that nothing is coming loose. Tightening any loose bolts is essential for maintaining the mount's structural integrity and safety.

  • Counterbalance Noise Management: The manual acknowledges that some noise from the counterbalance is expected due to its design, which allows the counterbalance to "float." To reduce this noise, users can try lubricating the rubbing joints. Additionally, a "half nut" on the counterbalance can be tightened to reduce float, though this might make lifting the TV slightly heavier.

  • Rubber Bumpers: Adhesive rubber bumpers are provided to be attached to the bottom of the TV mount. These bumpers help to prevent damage to the fireplace shelf or other surfaces the television might come into contact with when in its lowest position.

In summary, the Down And Out Mount is a robust and thoughtfully designed television mounting system that prioritizes flexibility, ease of use, and safety. Its adjustable counterbalance and tilt features, combined with clear installation and maintenance guidelines, make it a practical solution for dynamic television positioning in various home environments.
