Overview

This document is the owner's manual for EcoWater Systems Electronic Demand Water Softeners, specifically covering models ESD2700R25, ESD2702R30, and ESD2702R39. The manual provides instructions on how to install, operate, and maintain these water softeners.

Function Description

The EcoWater Systems Electronic Demand Water Softener is designed to reduce water hardness and improve water quality. It features a demand-initiated regeneration (D.I.R.) system, which optimizes salt and water usage by regenerating only when necessary, based on actual water consumption. The system is certified by NSF International against NSF/ANSI Standard 44 for hardness reduction, efficiency, and reduction of barium and radium 226/228, and to NSF/ANSI Standard 372. It is also certified by the Water Quality Association against CSA B483.1.

Important Technical Specifications

General:

  • Electrical Power: 24V DC, supplied by a direct plug-in power supply (included). Requires a nominal 120V, 60 Hz household outlet in a dry, grounded, and overcurrent-protected location.
  • Minimum Inlet Water Flow: 3 gallons per minute (gpm).
  • Recommended Maximum Allowable Inlet Water Pressure: 125 psi. A pressure reducing valve is recommended if daytime pressure exceeds 80 psi, ensuring flow remains above 3 gpm.
  • Water Temperature Range: 40-120°F (4.4-49°C). Operating outside this range or freezing will void the warranty.
  • pH Range: 7.5 ±0.5 (for testing parameters).
  • Dynamic Pressure: 35 ±5 psig (for testing parameters).
  • Microbiological Safety: Not intended for treating microbiologically unsafe or unknown quality water without prior disinfection.

Usage Features

  • Electronic Controller: The system is equipped with an electronic controller for programming and monitoring. It displays the present time, water hardness, and regeneration start time.
  • Bypass Valve: Essential for installation, allowing water to be shut off to the softener for maintenance while still providing water to the house. EcoWater Systems bypass valves or 3-valve bypass systems are supported.
  • Salt Efficiency Feature: When activated ("ON"), the softener operates at salt efficiencies of 4000 grains of hardness per pound of salt or higher, potentially leading to more frequent recharges with smaller salt dosages. This feature is required to be "ON" in California.
  • Manual Regeneration: Users can initiate a manual regeneration cycle immediately ("RECHARGE NOW") or schedule it for the next preset regeneration time ("RECHARGE TONIGHT").
  • Power Outage Memory: The internal memory retains settings like hardness and recharge time during power outages. The clock may need to be reset after an outage.
  • Vacation Note: The demand-controlled system will not regenerate when no water is being used, making it suitable for extended periods away from home.
  • Adjustable Backwash and Fast Rinse Times: The electronic controller allows adjustment of backwash and fast rinse times from 0 to 30 minutes.

Maintenance Features

  • Salt Refilling: Regular checking (every 2-3 weeks) and refilling of the brine tank is necessary. Recommended salts include cube, pellet, or coarse solar salts with less than 1% insoluble impurities. Potassium chloride (KCI) can be used, but requires a 25% increase in hardness setting and limits to one bag at a time (max 60 lbs KCI).
  • Salt Bridge Breaking: Instructions are provided for identifying and breaking salt bridges that can form in the brine tank, which prevent salt from dissolving.
  • Nozzle & Venturi Cleaning: Regular cleaning of the nozzle and venturi assembly is crucial for proper softener operation. This involves disassembling, washing parts in soapy water, rinsing, and reassembling.
  • Resin Bed Cleaning: If the water supply contains clear water iron, regular resin bed cleaning with EcoWater Systems resin bed cleaner is recommended every six months, or more frequently if iron appears in conditioned water.
  • Automatic Electronic Diagnostics: The softener has a self-diagnostic function that monitors electrical components and circuits. Error codes (e.g., Err01, Err03, Err04, Err05) are displayed for malfunctions related to the motor, valve position switch, wire harness, or electronic control board. Troubleshooting steps are provided to clear error codes.
  • Manually Initiated Electronic Diagnostics: Allows users to advance the softener through recharge cycles to check operation and diagnose issues with the water meter or position switch.
  • Resetting to Factory Defaults: The electronic controller can be reset to factory default settings for all parameters.
  • Sanitizing Procedure: Recommended upon installation and periodically, involves adding household bleach to the brinewell to sanitize the system.
