Overview

This document serves as a user guide for EDGE Street Series Component Speakers, specifically models ED305-E2 and ED306-E2. It provides essential information for owners, covering installation, wiring, and warranty details, ensuring users can achieve optimal performance and longevity from their product.

Function Description

The EDGE Street Series Component Speakers are designed to enhance the audio experience in vehicles by providing high-quality sound reproduction. As component speakers, they typically consist of separate woofers and tweeters, often accompanied by a crossover network. This design allows for more precise sound staging and imaging within the vehicle's cabin, as the different frequency ranges (lows from the woofer, highs from the tweeter) can be directed from optimal positions. The speakers are intended for use in car audio systems, either connected directly to an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or aftermarket head unit, or powered by an external amplifier for increased output and control.

Usage Features

Installation: The manual provides detailed guidelines for installing both the woofers and tweeters.

  • Woofer Installation:

    • Users should first confirm that the speakers fit their chosen location, potentially requiring the removal of standard vehicle speakers.
    • Mounting depth and hole cut dimensions are provided in the manual to assist with this.
    • Any necessary material should be cut away to ensure the speaker sits correctly.
    • The mounting hole should be cut, and other fixing holes pre-drilled.
    • The speaker should be securely fastened using the provided screws, screwing through both the gasket and the speaker.
    • A template is provided for finding a suitable mounting location and marking holes.
    • A 2mm drill bit is recommended for pre-drilling fixing holes.
    • If a grill is to be fitted, it should be placed over the speaker, and screws should go through both the grill and the speaker.
    • Caution is advised against over-tightening screws to prevent damage to the grill.
    • Before drilling or cutting, users must thoroughly investigate the mounting area for electrical wires, brake or fuel lines, or the fuel tank to prevent damage.
  • Tweeter Installation:

    • Tweeters can be fitted either flush mount or surface mount.

    • For optimal sound staging, tweeters should be located higher than the woofer, ideally within twelve inches (maximum) of it.

    • It is crucial to adjust the tweeter so it is focused towards the listener.

    • Surface Mount Installation:

      • After finding a suitable position, the base of the tweeter casing is placed in position.
      • The two mounting holes and the wire pass-through hole are marked.
      • A 2mm drill is used for fixing screws, and at least an 8mm hole for the cable, ensuring it's large enough to prevent chafing.
      • The tweeter cable is passed through the bottom of the case and the drilled hole.
      • The base of the tweeter housing is secured with provided screws.
      • Finally, the tweeter is angled towards the listener.
    • Flush Mount Installation (Two Methods):

      • Method 1 (using metal ring):
  • A suitable position is found, and the cut-out template for the tweeter is used to mark the area.

  • Before cutting, double-check for brake, fuel lines, or wiring harnesses.

  • Ensure the tweeter will not catch on moving parts (e.g., door/window handles) and that windows can be fully lowered if mounted in a door.

  • The hole is carefully cut out.

  • The entire tweeter is placed into the cut-out hole.

  • From the back, the metal ring is pushed over the rear of the casing until it is tight into the cut-out hole.

    • Method 2 (using metal strip):
  • A suitable position is found, and the cut-out template for the tweeter is used to mark the area.

  • Before cutting, double-check for brake, fuel lines, or wiring harnesses.

  • Ensure the tweeter will not catch on moving parts and that windows can be fully lowered if mounted in a door.

  • The hole is carefully cut out.

  • The metal strip fixing strip is positioned centrally behind the cut-out hole.

  • The base of the tweeter case is attached to the metal strip using fixing screws.

  • The tweeter cable is passed through the hole in the center of the bottom of the case and the metal fixing strip.

  • The cable is pulled tight until the tweeter sits in the base.

  • The top of the tweeter casing is screwed to the base, with a caution not to over-tighten.

  • Wiring Connections:

    • The manual details wiring connections for both OEM/aftermarket head units and external amplifiers.
    • General Wiring:
      • The tweeter output wire of the crossover (-TW+) connects to the tweeter using spade connectors.
      • The woofer output wire of the crossover (-WF+) connects to the woofer using spade connectors.
      • The input wire of the crossover (-IN+) connects to the speaker wiring in the vehicle (for head unit connection) or the speaker output of the amplifier (for external amplifier connection).
    • Polarity: Correct polarity is essential: Positive is indicated by a black/white stripe, and Negative is black. Improper phasing can lead to a loss of bass response.

Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes several critical safety precautions:

  • Moisture Exposure: Avoid exposing the product to dampness or moisture to prevent fire, shock, or damage.
  • Wiring Disconnection: Always disconnect the cable from the positive battery terminal before wiring to prevent electric shock or injury.
  • Correct Connections: Ensure all connections are good and correct to avoid fire or product damage.
  • Driving Safety: Do not use any functions that distract from driving. For prolonged setup, ensure the vehicle is stationary and in a safe location.
  • Volume Levels: Maintain a volume level that allows you to hear outside noise. EDGE equipment can produce sound levels that permanently damage hearing; caution is advised when listening at high volume. Sound should be comfortable and clear without distortion.
  • Chassis Connection: Never connect any speaker lead to the car chassis, as this can severely damage the speaker, car radio, or amplifier.
  • Drilling/Cutting: Exercise caution when drilling or cutting holes, investigating the vehicle layout, and working near fuel/hydraulic lines and electrical wiring.
  • Moving Parts: Ensure no moving parts (e.g., window or door handles, window glass) catch on the speaker or grill.

Maintenance Features

Warranty: EDGE products come with a full 12-month warranty from the date of original receipt and proof of purchase.

  • Validation: To validate the warranty, the online warranty card must be completed within seven days of purchase.
  • Returns: The original receipt and packaging should be retained for the 12-month period. If a product develops a problem, it should be returned to the point of purchase in its original packaging, complete with all items. If the store cannot repair it, the product may be returned to EDGE.
  • Exclusions: The warranty does not cover:
    • Damage due to improper installation or subsequent damage to other components.
    • Damage from moisture, excessive heat, chemical cleaners, or UV radiation.
    • Damage from negligence, misuse, accident, or abuse (repeated returns for the same fault may be considered abuse).
    • Costs related to product removal and/or re-installation.
    • Damage caused by amplifier clipping or distortion.
    • Items repaired or modified by unauthorized facilities.
    • Return shipping on non-defective items.
    • Products returned without a returns authorization number.
    • Damage due to the use of sealant.

International Warranty: For international customers, specific warranty procedures should be obtained by contacting the local EDGE dealer or distributor.

General Care: While not explicitly detailed as "maintenance," the cautions regarding exposure to dampness/moisture, correct connections, and avoiding physical damage (e.g., from moving parts or over-tightening screws) imply that proper installation and careful handling are key to the product's longevity and performance. The advice to keep sound levels clear without distortion also suggests that operating the speakers within their intended limits contributes to their maintenance and lifespan.
