Overview

The FW-SP4I Serial Port Expander Card is a device designed to add four optically isolated serial ports to a FireWorks workstation. It is compatible with FireWorks 1.41 or later.

Function Description

The primary function of the FW-SP4I card is to expand the serial communication capabilities of a FireWorks workstation by providing four additional RS-232 COM ports. These ports are optically isolated, enhancing system reliability and protecting against electrical surges. The card is shipped pre-configured for RS-232 operation, requiring no additional jumper settings for standard use.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Mounting Space: Requires one PCI expansion slot.
  • RS-232 COM Ports: Four.
  • Optical Isolation: Each port is individually isolated up to 3 kVAC peak to peak, providing robust protection against electrical interference and ground loops.
  • Operating Environment:
    • Temperature: 32 to 120°F (0 to 49°C).
    • Relative Humidity: 0 to 93% noncondensing.
  • Included Components:
    • FW-SP4I card.
    • Four RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter cables.
    • One bag of jumpers (for advanced configuration, though not required for standard RS-232).

COM Port Assignments

Windows automatically assigns COM ports to the FW-SP4I card's serial ports. To view these assignments:

  1. Open Windows Device Manager.
  2. Double-click "Ports (COM & LPT)."
  3. Look for devices labeled "CTI PCI Express UART Serial Port 1" through "4." The Windows COM port numbers will be displayed in brackets, along with the FW-SP4I card's serial number (e.g., SN#0000xxxx).

Cable Connections

Connect the supplied RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter cables to the FW-SP4I card. These cables are designed for communication security level 0. It is important to limit connections to the same room, within 20 ft. (6.1 m), and enclose them in conduit or provide equivalent protection against mechanical injury.

Maintenance Features

  • No Configuration Required: The FW-SP4I card is shipped pre-configured for RS-232 operation, eliminating the need for initial jumper adjustments.
  • Driver Updates: The provided driver CD ensures compatibility with various Windows operating systems (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7). Regular driver updates from the manufacturer's website (www.edwardsutcfs.com) may be available for continued optimal performance and compatibility.
  • ESD Protection: Adherence to accepted ESD handling procedures during installation is crucial to prevent damage to the sensitive electronic components of the card.
