Overview

This document is the owner's manual for the EG Athens 350MD Electric Bicycle, providing comprehensive information on its installation, operation, care, and maintenance.

Function Description

The EG Athens 350MD is an electric bicycle designed for versatile use, offering three distinct operating modes: Manual, Pedal Assist (PAS), and Throttle. It combines the traditional cycling experience with electric assistance, making it suitable for various terrains and rider preferences. The bicycle features a brushless motor with gears, providing efficient and sustained power. Safety is a key aspect, with a wired brake lever kill switch that disables the motor when the brakes are engaged, ensuring the motor does not continue to spin when the bicycle needs to stop. The bike is equipped with both front and rear LED lights/reflectors, powered by the main Li-ion battery and operated via the handlebar display unit, enhancing visibility and safety.

Usage Features

Operating Modes:

  • Manual Mode: The electric system is off, and the bicycle is pedaled like a conventional bike. The motor's gearing does not impede forward motion.
  • Pedal Assist (PAS) Levels 1-5:
    • Activated by turning the battery key to "ON" and pressing the "Power/M" button.
    • The motor assists pedaling, with assistance levels adjustable via "+" or "-" buttons.
    • PAS Level 1 offers the most "miles per charge" and slowest speed, while PAS Level 5 provides the highest speed and lowest "miles per charge."
    • The motor stops when the brake lever is depressed or when pedaling stops.
  • Pedal Assist (PAS) and Throttle on Demand (PAS Level 0):
    • In this mode, the PAS function is turned off, and the motor only operates via the thumb throttle.
    • The motor stops if the brake lever is depressed.
    • This mode can achieve speeds up to 20 MPH.
  • Throttle Mode:
    • Activated by pressing the "Power/M" button and engaging the thumb throttle.
    • The thumb throttle provides power to the motor independently of pedaling.
    • PAS mode is not active when the thumb throttle is engaged.
    • This mode uses the most battery power and offers the least "miles per charge."
    • The motor will NOT stop when pedaling stops, but it WILL stop if the brake lever is depressed.

Display Unit Features:

The handlebar-mounted LCD display provides critical information and controls:

  • Power/M Button: Turns the electrical system ON/OFF, and toggles between Odometer (Odo), Tripmeter (Trip), Max Speed (Max), Average Speed (AVG), and Total Time (Time).
  • "+" / "-" Buttons: Adjust PAS levels.
  • "+" Button (held for 3 seconds): Cycles LED Head and Tail lamp ON/OFF.
  • "-" Button (held down): Engages walk assist.
  • "-" Button (while on Max Speed, AVG, or Trip): Zeros out the meter.
  • Indications: Power indication, Light indication, Error code definition, 6Km/h mode, Level indication, Real-time speed/unit indication (Km/h and MPH switch), Total distance/single distance/riding time/max speed/average speed display.
  • Battery Meters: Two meters are present: one on the LCD screen (5 segments) and another on the battery pack itself (4 green and 1 red LEDs).

Installation:

The manual provides step-by-step instructions for unpacking and assembling the bicycle, including installing the handlebar, pedals, and ensuring the battery is properly installed and locked.

Maintenance Features

Battery Care:

  • Charging: Use only the supplied charger. Fully charge the battery for at least 12 hours during the first three initial charges. Always plug the charger into the battery pack before plugging into the wall socket. Do not leave the charger plugged in for more than 24 hours.
  • Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated place at >50% charge capacity (or charged for 2-3 hours from empty). Charge for 2-3 hours every two months even if not in use.
  • Safety: Never short circuit terminals, charge/discharge via incorrect terminals, expose to excessive heat/open flames, submerge in water, or subject to intense physical impact/vibration. Protect from water/moisture. Keep away from children. Do not disassemble.
  • Transport: Pack in a box, protect from impact, shock, vibrations, direct sunlight, or water logging.

Charger Care:

  • Storage: Disconnect from the battery when stored. Store in a box, protected from physical shock, vibrations, impact, direct sunlight, or water logging.
  • Safety: Do not place objects on it, pour liquids, insert metal, disassemble, or modify. Do not plug/unplug with wet hands. Avoid use during lightning storms, direct sunlight, or in unstable, dusty, or damp environments. Operate in a well-ventilated area. Unplug from the wall outlet when not in use.

General Bicycle Maintenance:

  • Frequent Inspection: Regularly inspect the bicycle for damage, wear, or loose fasteners. Replace damaged or worn parts immediately.
  • Bearing Maintenance: Frequently check and lubricate bearings, ideally once a year or as needed.
  • Frame Inspection: Carefully and frequently inspect the Aluminum Alloy frame for micro fractures or cracks, especially after stress, severe impact, or shocks. Stop riding immediately if any are found and have the frame repaired by a qualified professional.
  • Professional Service: Seek a bicycle service shop for repairs or adjustments if you lack the correct tools or understanding of the manual's instructions.
  • Serial Numbers: The manual specifies the location of the Frame, Motor, and Battery pack serial numbers for identification and warranty purposes.
  • Rear Wheel Detachment: Instructions are provided for detaching and reattaching the rear wheel for maintenance or repair, with a warning against unauthorized modifications that could void the warranty.
