IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING To guard against injury, basic safety precautions should be observed, including the following.
a)
READ AND FOLLOW ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.
b) DANGER To avoid possible electric shock, special care should be taken since water is employed
in the use of aquarium equipment. For each of the following situations, do not attempt repairs by yourself;
return the appliance to an authorized service facility for service or discard the appliance.
1) If the appliance falls into the water,
DON’T reach for it ! First unplug it and then retrieve it. If electrical
components of the appliance get wet, unplug the appliance immediately. (Non-immersible equipment only)
2) If the appliance shows any sign of abnormal water leakage, immediately unplug it from the power
source. (Immersible equipment only)
3) Carefully examine the appliance after installation. It should not be plugged in if there is water on parts
not intended to be wet.
4) Do not operate any appliance if it has a damaged cord or plug, or if it is malfunctioning or has been
dropped or damaged in any manner.
5) To avoid the possibility of the appliance plug or receptacle getting wet, position aquarium stand and
tank to one side of a wall-mounted receptacle to prevent water from dripping onto the receptacle or plug.
A ”drip loop”, shown in the figure, should be arranged by the user for each cord connecting an aquarium
appliance to a receptacle. The ”drip loop” is that part of the cord below the level of the receptacle, or the
connector if an extension cord is used, to prevent
water traveling along the cord and coming in contact
with the receptacle. If the plug or socket does get
wet,
DON’T unplug the cord. Disconnect the fuse or
circuit breaker that supplies power to the appliance.
Then unplug and examine for presence of water in
the receptacle.
c) Close supervision is necessary when any appliance
is used by or near children.
d) To avoid injury, do not contact moving parts or hot
parts such as heaters, reflectors, lamp bulbs etc.
e) Always unplug an appliance from an outlet when not
in use, before putting on or taking off parts, and be-
fore cleaning. Never yank cord to pull plug from out-
let. Grasp the plug and pull to disconnect.
f) Do not use an appliance for other than intended use. The use of attachments not recommended or sold
by the appliance manufacturer may cause an unsafe condition.
g) Do not install or store the appliance where it will be exposed to the weather or to temperatures below
freezing.
h) Make sure an appliance mounted on a tank is securely installed before operating it.
i) Read and observe all the important notices on the appliance.
j) If an extension cord is necessary, a cord with a proper rating should be used. A cord rated for less am-
peres or watts than the appliance rating may overheat. Care should be taken to arrange the cord so that
it will not be tripped over or pulled.
k) This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). As a safety feature, this plug will
fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still
does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Never use with an extension cord unless plug can be fully in-
serted. Do not attempt to defeat this safety feature.
Exception: This instruction may be omitted for an appliance that is not provided with a polarized attach-
ment plug.

Overview

This document provides operating instructions and technical information for the EHEIM professionel external aquarium filters, specifically models 2222 and 2224, and the EHEIM professionel thermofilters, models 2322 and 2324. The thermofilter models include an integrated heating element.

Function Description:

The EHEIM professionel external filters are designed to provide optimum performance, reliability, and effectiveness for aquariums. They feature a large container volume combined with a balanced combination of filter media to ensure highly effective disposal of pollutants. The thermofilter versions additionally incorporate a heating element to maintain a desired water temperature. The device utilizes a pump head, filter media containers, and an integrated double tap connector for water flow control. Water is drawn from the aquarium through an intake pipe and strainer, passes through various filter media, and is then returned to the aquarium via a security outlet pipe and spray bar. A "drip loop" arrangement for the power cord is recommended to prevent water from dripping onto electrical receptacles.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: External Aquarium Filter 2222 and 2224; Aquarium Thermofilter 2322 and 2324.
  • Water Type: External filters 2222 and 2224 are suitable for fresh and sea water. Thermofilters 2322 and 2324 are suitable for fresh water only (sea water resistant versions available on request).
  • Installation Height: The distance between the water surface and the base of the filter should not exceed 180 cm (5'11") for optimum functioning.
  • Power Cord: The mains cable of the device cannot be replaced.
  • Plug Type: This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) as a safety feature.
  • Magnetic Fields: These devices produce magnetic fields that might cause electronic and mechanical disturbances or damages, particularly relevant for pacemakers. A safety margin of 20 cm is specified.
  • Temperature Control (Thermofilter): The thermofilter features a control knob for setting the desired water temperature, with an initial recommended range of 25°C to 27°C. Each subdivision on the +/- scale corresponds to approximately 1°C.
  • Components:
    • Pump head
    • Sealing gasket

  • Drip Loop: Users must arrange a "drip loop" for each cord connecting an aquarium appliance to a receptacle to prevent water from reaching the plug or socket.
  • Polarized Plug: Ensure the polarized plug is fully inserted into the outlet. If it doesn't fit, reverse it. Do not attempt to defeat this safety feature.
  • Hose Installation: Tubing should be pushed onto the intake and output supports as far as they will go. Soaking hoses in warm water beforehand can make them softer. Only original EHEIM hoses should be used.
  • Flow Control: Water flow from the pump can be controlled by using the tap on the pressure side (OUT) only. Never reduce pump output by closing the tap on the suction side (IN).
  • Syphon Establishment: To start the filter, open the taps of the integrated double tap connector to the ON position, separate the output hose from the spray bar, and suck strongly on the hose to establish the syphon.
  • Thermofilter Operation: For thermofilters, connect the heater's mains plug (separate cable) only after the filter is running smoothly. Never operate the heater when dry. Allow a few minutes for the temperature probe to adapt to the water temperature before setting. The control light indicates heater operation and switches off when the desired temperature is reached.
  • Spray Bar Installation: The spray bar can be installed below water level or just above the surface, depending on the desired amount of oxygen-rich surface movement.
  • Extension Cords: If an extension cord is necessary, use one with a proper rating (amps/watts) to avoid overheating. Arrange the cord to prevent tripping or pulling.
  • Placement: Do not install or store the appliance where it will be exposed to weather or freezing temperatures. Avoid placing the appliance on unprotected wooden surfaces, as its feet may leave visible traces due to chemical reactions with varnishes/polishes.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Unplug the heater's mains plug first (for thermofilters), then the pump's mains plug.
    • Close both tap levers (OFF position) on the integrated double tap connector.
    • Remove the double tap connector and then the pump head from the canister.
    • To clean the pump chamber, turn the pump head upside down, open the pump cover by turning it anti-clockwise, and remove the pump cover, impeller, and shaft.
    • Thoroughly clean pump parts, impeller chamber, and cooling channel with an EHEIM cleaning set (order no. 4009580). Rinse the shaft carefully.
    • Wash out filter media with used aquarium water until no cloudiness is seen.
    • Wash out the filter canister.
  • Filter Media Replacement:
    • The fine filter pad (white) serves as mechanical fine filtration and should be used only once, then replaced with a new pad (order no. 2616225).
    • The blue filter pad (order no. 2616220) can be reused 2-3 times after thorough rinsing.
    • When renewing SUBSTRATpro media, retain 1/3 of used filter medium and mix with new material to speed up bacteria recolonization.
    • Ensure filter media containers are filled correctly, not overfilled, and that the flow-through pipe is not clogged.
  • Seals and O-rings:
    • Check the sealing gasket on the pump head for cleanliness and proper placement in its groove. Lightly lubricate with Vaseline.
    • Examine both o-rings on the double tap connector for damage and correct fitting. Lightly grease them with Vaseline to aid installation.
    • All hose connections should be checked at regular intervals for correct fitting.
  • Thermofilter Specific Maintenance:
    • Periodically check the heating element for dirt deposits and clean if necessary. Do not bend the heating element.
    • Do not submerge the filter canister underwater. Ensure heater electrics do not come into contact with splashing water.
    • Only connect the heater's plug into the mains once the filter is running smoothly after reassembly.
  • Upright Operation: The filter must always be operated in an upright position only.
  • Troubleshooting: If the appliance falls into water, unplug it first, then retrieve it. If electrical components get wet, unplug immediately. If abnormal water leakage occurs, unplug immediately.
