Overview

The Electric Eel Model EJ1500 is an electric-powered drain jetter designed for cleaning grease, soap, sludge, and sand from various drain lines. It operates by utilizing high-pressure water combined with sufficient water flow to remove debris.

Function Description

The EJ1500 is a high-pressure sewer/drain cleaning machine that directs pressurized water through a nozzle to cut through stoppages and clear away debris. Its primary function is to propel a jetter hose into a pipeline and then, by pulling the hose back, clean the walls of the pipe. The machine is equipped with a pulsator feature that assists in moving the jetter hose into the pipeline and around tight bends, reducing drag and enhancing propulsion.

Important Technical Specifications

The Electric Eel jetter operates up to 1500 PSI (pounds per square inch). The pump's pressure can be adjusted via a control knob, with the operating pressure displayed on a gauge.

Hose Sizes and Corresponding Pipe Sizes:

  • 1/4" Hose: Suitable for pipe sizes ranging from 2" to 4".
  • 1/8" Hose: Suitable for smaller lines, from 1 1/4" to 2".

Nozzles:

  • 1/4" Hose Nozzles: Available with 40° multiple rear jets, 15° multiple rear jets, and multiple rear jets with a forward jet.
  • 1/8" Hose Nozzles: Available with 40° multiple rear jets and multiple rear jets with a forward jet.

Spray Patterns:

  • Forward Jet: Designed to penetrate blockages.
  • Rear Jets: Used to drive the hose down a line and clean the pipe walls.
  • 15° Tight Spray Pattern: Provides more driving power for longer runs.
  • 40° Wide Spray Pattern: Effective for cleaning grease from pipe walls.

Water Supply Requirements:

  • The incoming water supply must not contain impurities such as dirt or debris.
  • The hose used for water supply should have an inside diameter of at least 5/8 inch.
  • The supply must be capable of providing the flow rate required by the pump.
  • Water temperature should not exceed 140° F to prevent damage to pump seals.

Motor:

  • The unit is equipped with a 1 1/2 HP motor.

Usage Features

Hose Selection:

  • It is crucial to select the largest possible hose size to maximize pressure at the hose end. Pressure decreases as water travels through the hose, so longer distances result in greater pressure loss.
  • For bathroom sinks, showers, and smaller lines, 1/8" hose (1/2"-2" pipe size) is recommended.
  • For laundry drains and kitchen sinks, 1/4" hose (2"-4" pipe size) is recommended.

Nozzle Selection:

  • Nozzles must match the pump size to avoid pressure loss or excessive pressure buildup that could damage the machine.
  • All nozzles have rear holes for propulsion and cleaning. Nozzles with both rear and forward holes are used for penetrating solid grease on sludge blockages.
  • 15° nozzles offer a tighter spray pattern and more driving power for longer runs.
  • 40° nozzles provide a wider spray pattern for removing grease.

Operating Procedure:

  1. Connect the supply hose to a water faucet, purge air from the hose, and then connect it to the pump's water inlet.
  2. Securely fasten the nozzle to the jet hose and insert the hose into the line at least 3 feet.
  3. Turn on the water faucet and start the electric motor.
  4. Open the water valve to the jetter hose, allowing it to advance into the drain line.
  5. Adjust pressure using the control knob, observing the pressure gauge.
  6. For effective cleaning, pull the hose back one-half the distance advanced, moving it back and forth to ensure thorough cleaning and prevent the hose from getting caught.
  7. If the hose struggles to advance, rotate it by forming a loop near the drain opening and turning the loop 90° to 180°.
  8. It is generally best to clean a line from the lower end.

Pulsation Feature:

  • The pulsator assists in moving the hose into the pipeline and around bends by reducing drag.
  • To engage pulsation, ensure the unit is running and the hose is in line, then turn the pulse valve clockwise until pulsation is felt. Adjust the knob to achieve the desired pulsation level.
  • Always start the electric motor with the pulse off. Pulsation may not be necessary for lines with minimal blockage.

Safety Warnings and Cautions:

  • Never remove the jetter hose from the drain line while the motor is running or the hose is pressurized.
  • Always wear safety glasses, face shields, and rubber gloves.
  • Avoid contact with acids or caustic substances; neutralize or remove them before cleaning.
  • Avoid exposing skin cuts to drains and sewers due to bacterial infection risks.
  • Never leave the equipment unattended when turned on; shut it off and relieve pressure if leaving.
  • Wear non-skid footwear.
  • Never spray flammable or toxic liquids.
  • Do not allow children or untrained adults to operate the machine.
  • Locate the machine as close as possible to the pipe opening, ensuring hoses do not whip.
  • Never point the hose end at a person.
  • Keep all decals, labels, warnings, and instructions on the machine intact.
  • Avoid loose-fitting clothing.
  • Do not operate when fatigued.
  • Place the machine on a stable and accessible surface.
  • Do not exceed equipment limitations.
  • Lift with your legs, not your back.

Maintenance Features

Pre-Operation Checklist:

  • Inlet Screen: Must be cleaned regularly before each use to prevent damage to the pump and pulsator.
  • Water Supply Check: Ensure the incoming water supply is free of impurities. Run water for at least 15 seconds before connecting the hose to the machine.
  • Pump Oil Level: Check before each use; the oil should be halfway up the sight glass.

Shutdown Procedure:

  • After clearing a blockage and ensuring water flow, close the water supply valve to the jetter hose.
  • Turn off the motor.
  • Retract the hose from the line and rewind it onto the reel.
