Overview

The Electro-Harmonix Green Russian Big Muff Pi is an authentic reissue of the legendary Green Russian Big Muff Pi, designed to deliver the same beloved harmonic distortion and sustain sound in a smaller, pedalboard-friendly enclosure. It is suitable for both guitarists and bassists.

Function Description

The Green Russian Big Muff Pi is a distortion-sustain device that allows users to shape their sound from high treble to deep bass, with adjustable levels of sustain and distortion. It features true bypass mode, ensuring that the instrument's signal remains unaffected when the pedal is disengaged.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Input Impedance: 130kΩ at the IN jack.
  • Output Impedance: Nominally 25kΩ at the OUT jack.
  • Power Requirements:
    • 9V battery.
    • Optional 9VDC AC Adapter (such as EHX9.6DC-200 or any Boss® or Ibanez® style AC adapters) capable of delivering at least 30mA.
  • Current Draw: Approximately 2.2mA at 9VDC.
  • Bypass Mode: True bypass.

Usage Features

The pedal features three main control knobs and a footswitch with an LED indicator:

  • VOLUME Knob: This knob controls the overall output level of the pedal. Turning it clockwise increases the volume, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it.
  • TONE Knob: This knob allows for exploration of a wide range of sounds, from bright, cutting treble to warm, deep bass.
    • Turning the TONE knob clockwise increases treble and decreases bass.
    • Turning the TONE knob counterclockwise increases bass and decreases treble.
  • SUSTAIN Knob: This knob adjusts the amount of sustain and distortion applied to the signal. Increasing the SUSTAIN knob clockwise will result in longer sustain and more pronounced distortion.
  • Footswitch & Status LED:
    • The footswitch is used to toggle the pedal between its effect mode and bypass mode.
    • When the LED is lit, the Green Russian Big Muff Pi is active, and the effect is engaged.
    • When the LED is off, the pedal is in true bypass mode, meaning the instrument's signal passes through unaffected.
  • IN Jack: This 1/4" jack is where the output of your instrument or another effects pedal should be connected.
  • OUT Jack: This 1/4" jack should be connected to the input of your amplifier or another effects pedal. In bypass mode, the OUT jack is directly connected to the IN jack, maintaining signal integrity.
  • Power Jack: Located at the top of the pedal, this 9V power jack is used for connecting an optional AC adapter. The 9V battery can remain in or be removed when using an AC adapter.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement:
    • To change the 9V battery, remove the four screws located on the bottom plate of the pedal.
    • Carefully lift off the bottom plate.
    • Replace the old 9V battery with a new one.
    • It is important to avoid touching the circuit board while the bottom plate is off to prevent damage.
    • Once the new battery is in place, replace the bottom plate and secure it with the four screws.
  • Power Adapter Usage:
    • Always ensure that any AC adapter used is a 9VDC adapter capable of delivering at least 30mA.
    • Crucially, verify that the adapter has the correct polarity. Using an adapter with the wrong voltage or polarity can damage the Green Russian Big Muff Pi and void its warranty.
  • Warranty Information:
    • The product comes with a one-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in materials or workmanship for original purchasers from authorized Electro-Harmonix retailers.
    • To register the product for warranty, visit http://www.ehx.com/product-registration or complete and return the enclosed warranty card within 10 days of purchase.
    • For service under warranty, customers in the USA and Canada must first obtain a Return Authorization Number (RA#) from EHX Customer Service.
    • When returning a unit for service, include a written description of the problem, your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, the RA#, and a copy of your purchase receipt clearly showing the purchase date.
    • Customers outside the listed regions should contact EHX Customer Service at info@ehx.com or +1-718-937-8300 for warranty repair information.
