SMOKE ALARM USER MANUAL
DESCRIPTION
The unit is a photoelectric 220~240V AC, 9V DC battery back-up smoke alarm device. It is particularly
sensitive for detecting visible micro-particles (associated with smoldering fires) and reacts faster than
ionization alarms.
An example of such smoldering fires is a cigarette burning in a couch or bedding a common cause
of devastating blazes.
Please note this device does not detect flames, heat, carbon monoxide or other hazardous gases.
It has many advanced features and an extended operational life with the included battery.
To enable interconnection with other Emerald RF smoke alarms add an RF module (EP-VC-RF-MOD).

Overview

This document describes the Emerald Alarms EP-VC-240-10 smoke alarm, a photoelectric device designed for residential use. It is specifically engineered to detect visible micro-particles associated with smoldering fires, reacting faster than ionization alarms. The unit does not detect flames, heat, carbon monoxide, or other hazardous gases.

Function Description

The EP-VC-240-10 is a 220-240V AC powered smoke alarm with a 9V DC battery backup. It is designed for ceiling mount only. A key feature is its wired interconnection capability, allowing up to 40 Emerald 240V alarms to be linked. If one interconnected alarm activates, all linked alarms on the circuit will sound. An optional wireless radio frequency (RF) module (EP-VC-RF-MOD) can be added to connect with up to 40 Emerald RF-enabled alarms, offering a wireless interconnect distance of over 20m indoors (100m outside).

The alarm operates in three modes:

  • Regular Mode: When no smoke is present, the green LED remains on, and the red LED flashes every 40 seconds, indicating correct operation.
  • Alarm Mode: Upon smoke detection, the red LED flashes once per second, and the alarm sounds loudly. This continues until the air clears.
  • Fault Mode: The alarm emits a 'chirp' every 40 seconds to indicate a fault.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model Number: EP-VC-240-10
  • Dimensions: 140 x 44.9mm
  • Weight: 281.1g
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Power Source: 220-240V AC mains power with a 9V lithium manganese dioxide battery (EVE CR9V-P) backup. The battery is replaceable and has a 10-year life under normal operating conditions (without wireless interconnection).
  • Sensor Type: Photoelectric optical chamber
  • Sound Pattern: ISO 8201
  • Alarm Volume: >85dB(A) @ 3m
  • Operating/Storage Temperature: 0°C to 40°C
  • Operating/Storage Humidity: <93% relative humidity (non-condensing)
  • Interconnection: Wired (up to 40 alarms, 150m maximum wiring length) or optional wireless RF (up to 40 alarms, >20m indoors).
  • Wiring: Minimum 1.0mm² 250V insulated wire for all wiring, including interconnecting. Terminal provisions accommodate 2x1.5mm² for active, neutral, loop, and interconnect terminals.
  • Compliance: AS3786:2014

Usage Features

  • Activation: The alarm automatically activates upon battery insertion. The backing plate cannot be closed without the battery installed.
  • Testing: Monthly testing is recommended by pressing the test button on the cover. Holding the test button for 5 seconds tests all interconnected alarms.
  • Low Battery Warning: An audible 'chirp' every 40 seconds, accompanied by a red LED flash, indicates a low battery. The alarm will continue to warn for at least 30 days, but immediate replacement is required for continued protection.
  • Silence Alarm (Hush Function): In the event of a known false alarm (e.g., cooking fumes), pressing the hush button temporarily silences the alarm for approximately 8 minutes. During this reduced sensitivity cycle, the red LED flashes every 8 seconds. The alarm automatically returns to full sensitivity after 8 minutes.
  • Installation Guidelines:
    • Must be installed by a licensed electrician.
    • All interconnected alarms must be supplied from the same circuit, using a common neutral for interconnect operation.
    • The interconnect wire must NOT be connected to active or neutral.
    • Ceiling mounting is recommended, at least 30cm from side walls.
    • On sloped, peaked, or cathedral ceilings, install between 50cm and 250cm from the highest point.
    • Avoid "dead air" spaces (e.g., corners where walls and ceiling meet).
    • Not suitable for wall (vertical) mounting.
    • Avoid areas prone to steam, condensation, normal smoke/heat from appliances (bathrooms, kitchens, garages), high humidity (at least 3 meters from dishwashers/washing machines), air returns/heating/cooling vents (at least 1 meter away), extreme temperatures (below 0°C or above 40°C), dusty/dirty/insect-infested areas, and air conditioning/ventilation grilles/louvers.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement: The 9V battery should be replaced immediately when the low battery warning sounds. Test the alarm after each battery replacement. The recommended battery is EVE CR9V/P.
  • Cleaning: Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure efficient operation and reduce false alarms.
    • Disconnect AC mains power at the fuse box or circuit breaker before cleaning.
    • Clean the alarm at least once a month to remove dust, dirt, or debris.
    • Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush to clean all sides and the cover of the device.
    • Do not attempt to remove the cover to clean inside, as this will affect the warranty.
  • Regular Testing: Test the smoke alarm monthly.
  • Immediate Replacement: If the detectors are not working properly, replace them immediately.

The package includes the smoke alarm, instruction manual, screws, battery, and mounting plate.
