The SmartSet® technology is a key feature, allowing the clock radio to automatically set the correct year, month, date, day, and time upon being plugged into an AC outlet. Users only need to specify their time zone, and the internal computer handles the rest, even after power interruptions. This automatic time setting is a significant convenience, differentiating it from traditional clock radios.
The Emerson CKS1702 primarily functions as a clock radio with an alarm feature. It integrates an AM/FM radio tuner, allowing users to listen to their preferred stations. The SmartSet® system is at the core of its timekeeping functionality, ensuring accurate time display without manual intervention for initial setup or after power outages. The device includes a time display that shows the current time, and it can also display the date (month/day), year, and day of the week.

If the user resides in a different time zone, they simply press the TIME ZONE button and use the SET ▲ (Up) or SET ▼ (Down) buttons to select their correct zone. This setting is then remembered, ensuring the correct time is displayed even after subsequent power interruptions. The display will scan for a few seconds and then show the correct day and time for the selected zone.
To view the date, users can press the MONTH/DATE button, which temporarily changes the display from time to month and date (MM/DD). Releasing the button returns the display to the current time. Similarly, pressing both MONTH/DATE and TIME buttons simultaneously will show the year, returning to the time display upon release. To view the day of the week, if the radio or buzzer is off, pressing the SNOOZE button will display the day of the week. If the radio or buzzer is on, pressing SNOOZE twice will first stop the audio and then display the day of the week. The display uses "d1" through "d7" to represent Monday through Sunday, respectively.
The radio operation is straightforward with a RADIO ON/OFF button, VOLUME control, and TUNING control. The Radio BAND (AM/FM) switch allows selection of the desired frequency band. The device is equipped with a polarized AC power plug for safety.
