Do you have a question about the Emerson SmartSet CKS1702 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the Emerson CKS1702 Single Alarm AM/FM Clock Radio with SmartSet® Automatic Time Setting System, a device designed for convenient timekeeping and audio playback. The SmartSet® technology is a key feature, allowing the clock radio to automatically set the correct year, month, date, day, and time upon being plugged into an AC outlet. Users only need to specify their time zone, and the internal computer handles the rest, even after power interruptions. This automatic time setting is a significant convenience, differentiating it from traditional clock radios.

Function Description

The Emerson CKS1702 primarily functions as a clock radio with an alarm feature. It integrates an AM/FM radio tuner, allowing users to listen to their preferred stations. The SmartSet® system is at the core of its timekeeping functionality, ensuring accurate time display without manual intervention for initial setup or after power outages. The device includes a time display that shows the current time, and it can also display the date (month/day), year, and day of the week.

The alarm function offers flexibility, allowing users to wake up to either the radio or a buzzer. A SNOOZE button is provided for temporary silencing of the alarm, offering a few extra minutes of rest. The radio features volume control and a tuning control for selecting stations. An AM/FM band switch allows users to toggle between radio bands.

Beyond basic time and alarm functions, the CKS1702 includes a Sleep to Music Timer (SLEEP Button). This feature allows users to fall asleep to music, with the radio automatically turning off after a set period. The device is designed for ease of use, with clearly labeled buttons for setting time, date, and alarm, as well as for radio operation.

Usage Features

The SmartSet® system simplifies initial setup considerably. Upon plugging in the clock radio, it automatically defaults to the Eastern Time Zone. If the user resides in a different time zone, they simply press the TIME ZONE button and use the SET ▲ (Up) or SET ▼ (Down) buttons to select their correct zone. This setting is then remembered, ensuring the correct time is displayed even after subsequent power interruptions. The display will scan for a few seconds and then show the correct day and time for the selected zone.

To view the date, users can press the MONTH/DATE button, which temporarily changes the display from time to month and date (MM/DD). Releasing the button returns the display to the current time. Similarly, pressing both MONTH/DATE and TIME buttons simultaneously will show the year, returning to the time display upon release. To view the day of the week, if the radio or buzzer is off, pressing the SNOOZE button will display the day of the week. If the radio or buzzer is on, pressing SNOOZE twice will first stop the audio and then display the day of the week. The display uses "d1" through "d7" to represent Monday through Sunday, respectively.

The radio operation is straightforward with a RADIO ON/OFF button, VOLUME control, and TUNING control. The Radio BAND (AM/FM) switch allows selection of the desired frequency band. The device is equipped with a polarized AC power plug for safety.

Maintenance Features

The manual emphasizes several important safety and maintenance guidelines to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the device.

  • Placement: The clock radio should be placed on a level surface, away from direct sunlight, heat sources (like radiators or other stereo equipment), and areas with poor ventilation, excessive dust, humidity, or constant vibration. This helps prevent overheating and damage to internal components.
  • Cleaning: The device should only be cleaned with a dry cloth. Avoid using liquids or abrasive cleaners that could damage the cabinet or internal electronics.
  • Power Cord Protection: Users are advised to protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, especially at plugs and where it exits the apparatus. The FM antenna is built into the AC power cord, so it should be fully extended to ensure optimal FM reception.
  • Battery Backup: The unit includes a backup battery compartment, which houses a lithium battery. This battery maintains time and alarm settings during power interruptions. To maximize the life of this battery, it's recommended to keep the radio connected to a "live" AC outlet at all times. The manual also includes a caution regarding battery replacement, stating that only the same or equivalent type of battery should be used to prevent the risk of explosion. A "LOW BATT." LED indicator is present to signal when the battery needs attention.
  • Furniture Protection: The device features non-skid rubber feet to prevent movement. However, certain furniture polishes or cleaning sprays can soften these feet, potentially leaving marks. To prevent damage to fine wooden furniture, it is recommended to apply small self-adhesive felt pads to the bottom of the rubber feet.
  • Unpacking and Setup: When unpacking, users are advised to save the original carton and packing material. This material is crucial for safely transporting the radio if it ever needs to be returned for service. Descriptive labels or stickers on the front or top of the cabinet can be removed, but those on the back or bottom should remain. The serial number, located on the bottom of the radio, should be noted in the provided space in the manual for warranty purposes.
  • Servicing: All servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel, especially if the apparatus has been damaged, exposed to moisture, or is not operating normally.
  • FCC Compliance: The device complies with FCC rules, and users are advised that any changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void their authority to operate the equipment. This includes measures to correct potential radio or television interference, such as reorienting the receiving antenna or increasing separation between equipment.
