Overview

The Emona Instruments ProTag OPTIMA-II Printer (PT-OPT) is a portable thermal printer designed for use with PAT (Portable Appliance Tester) devices, specifically the PrimeTest 300 and PrimeTest ELITE models. It utilizes direct thermal printing technology, requiring unique direct thermal OPT (OPTIMA) test tags for operation. These tags are available in six colors: white, red, orange, blue, green, and yellow, with corresponding part codes (OPT-WHITE, OPT-RED, OPT-ORANGE, OPT-BLUE, OPT-GREEN, OPT-YELLOW). The printer is identified by the ABN 79 069 417 563 and operates under the slogan "THE TECHNOLOGY HOUSE."

Function Description:

The ProTag OPTIMA-II Printer's primary function is to print test tags for portable appliances, likely containing information such as test dates, results, and other relevant data generated by a connected PAT tester. Its thermal printing mechanism allows for quick and efficient tag creation on-site. The printer is designed for portability, indicated by its battery operation and the availability of a belt clip for hands-free carrying.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific technical specifications like print resolution, speed, or battery capacity are not explicitly detailed in the provided manual excerpts, the following can be inferred:

  • Printing Technology: Direct Thermal Printing.
  • Consumables: Requires specific OPTIMA labels (test tags) available in six colors.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth for pairing with PAT testers (PrimeTest 300, PrimeTest ELITE).
  • Power Source: Battery-operated, with charging capabilities via an optional AC adapter, cigarette lighter adapter, or DC adapter.
  • Compatibility: Designed to work seamlessly with PrimeTest 300 and PrimeTest ELITE PAT testers.

Usage Features:

  • Portability: The printer is designed for on-the-go use, featuring battery power and an optional belt clip for easy transport and access during testing.
  • Bluetooth Pairing: The manual provides detailed instructions for connecting the printer to both PrimeTest 300 and PrimeTest ELITE testers via Bluetooth. This involves navigating through the tester's menu, searching for Bluetooth devices, selecting the printer (identified by "Emona [4-digit no]"), adding it, and setting the printer type to "Protag Optima."
  • Media Loading: The manual outlines a step-by-step process for loading media rolls. This includes opening the top cover, adjusting paper guides to the media roll width, locking the paper guides, pulling the media edge towards the operation panel, and closing the top cover to remove slack. It emphasizes using only "outside wound media" and TOSHIBA TEC approved media for optimal print results and to avoid damage.
  • Battery Management: Users are advised to switch off the printer after use to preserve battery charge, as it does not automatically power off.
  • Error Handling: In case of a "PAPER JAM," users are instructed to press the "PAUSE" button, which allows for calibration and automatic reprinting of the last tag.
  • Belt Clip Attachment: Instructions are provided for securing the supplied belt clip to the printer's back using two screws, with a warning to use only the supplied screws to prevent internal damage.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the printer's longevity and optimal performance, particularly due to its thermal printing mechanism and the use of linerless labels.

  • Print Head Maintenance:
    • The print head element should be wiped with a supplied print head cleaner pen.
    • When linerless labels are used, dirt or residual glue should be wiped off the print head each time one or two media rolls are used up. This prevents print quality degradation and potential damage.
  • Media Sensor Window and Media Path Maintenance:
    • Dust and dirt should be removed from the Media Sensor Window using a commercially available soft, dry brush.
    • The Media Path should be wiped clean with a soft, dry cloth.
    • Similar to the print head, when linerless labels are used, dirt or residual glue should be wiped off the Media Guides each time one or two media rolls are used up.
  • Battery Charging: The printer's battery pack can be charged by inserting the plug of an optional AC adapter, cigarette lighter adapter, or DC adapter into the DCIN Connector of the printer.

Important Notes from the Manual:

  • The direct thermal OPT (OPTIMA) test tags are ideal for indoor or limited outdoor applications and may fade if exposed to elements like heat or UV light for prolonged periods.
  • The manual strongly advises using only TOSHIBA TEC approved media. Emona Instruments is not responsible for print results caused by the use of other media.
  • When ordering media, users should contact their nearest TOSHIBA TEC representative.
  • When moving the Paper Guides, the Paper Guide Lever must be unlocked first to prevent damage.

The manual also provides contact information for Emona Instruments in various Australian states (NSW, VIC, QLD, SA/NT/TAS, WA), including telephone numbers, fax numbers, an email address (testinst@emona.com.au), and website addresses (www.protag.com.au, www.emona.com.au).
