Overview

This document is an installation and operating manual for Empire Floor Furnaces, specifically models 3588XLP-1, 5088XLP-1, 7088XLP-1, 3588XNAT-1, 5088XNAT-1, and 7088XNAT-1. These are gravity-type floor furnaces designed for heating residential spaces.

Function Description:

The Empire Floor Furnace is a heating appliance that operates on either natural gas (NAT) or liquid propane (LP), as indicated by the model number suffix. It functions by drawing in cool air, heating it using a gas burner, and then circulating the warm air into the living space through a floor register. The furnace is designed to be installed within the floor structure, with the register flush with the floor. Combustion byproducts are vented through a flue pipe to a chimney or appropriate vent system. The appliance is equipped with a Piezo ignitor for lighting the pilot light without requiring removal of the lighter hole cover. A control rod allows for setting the temperature to "LOW HEAT" or "FULL HEAT," and also for turning the pilot on or off.

  • Design Certification: Certified in accordance with American National Standard Z21.86 by the Canadian Standards Association as a gravity type Floor Furnace.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Requires careful planning for placement to ensure proper venting and heat distribution. The furnace should be located out of high-traffic areas and away from flammable materials. Installation involves cutting a floor opening, installing headers/supports, and connecting to a proper venting system (Type B vent pipe is recommended, with specific slope and clearance requirements). A "Cutout Template" is provided for accurate floor opening dimensions.
  • Gas Supply: Requires a 1/2 inch N.P.T. gas inlet. A manual shut-off valve and a "drip" (sediment trap) must be installed in the gas line. Gas lines must be checked for leaks using a soap solution; open flames are strictly prohibited for leak testing.
  • Lighting Instructions (Intermittent Pilot):
    1. Remove floor register.
    2. Push in gas control rod slightly and turn clockwise to "OFF."
    3. Remove pilot access cover.
    4. Wait 10 minutes to clear out any gas, then check for gas odor.
    5. Turn gas control rod counterclockwise to "PILOT."
    6. Push and hold control rod in, then repeatedly push the ignitor button until the pilot is lit. Hold for about one minute after lighting, then release. If the pilot goes out, repeat the process.
    7. Replace pilot access cover.
    8. Turn gas control knob counterclockwise to "ON."
    9. Replace floor register.
  • Temperature Control: The register temperature control has "LOW HEAT" (black) and "FULL HEAT" (red) settings. "LOW HEAT" limits the register temperature to a maximum of 235°F and is recommended when children are present.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Never operate without the floor register installed.
    • High surface temperatures can cause burns; keep children and flammable materials away.
    • Do not place clothing or objects on or near the appliance.
    • Do not obstruct air flow around the register.
    • Do not run the furnace with the lighter hole open or a broken lighter hole window, as exhaust gases can enter the living area.
    • If you smell gas, do not operate electrical switches, use the phone, or try to light any appliance; evacuate immediately and call the gas supplier.
    • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Hazard: Follow venting system inspection and testing procedures carefully to prevent CO poisoning.
    • Do not use if any part has been under water; call a qualified service technician.
    • Do not connect to a chimney flue serving a separate solid-fuel burning appliance.
    • High Altitude Use: Orifice size must be reduced for altitudes over 2,000 feet to prevent CO generation and unit damage.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance: Installation and repair must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency, or gas supplier. The appliance should be inspected before use and at least annually by a qualified service person. More frequent cleaning may be required due to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding materials, etc.
  • Cleaning: Control compartments, burners, and circulating air passageways must be kept clean.
  • Main Burner Cleaning: Remove the burner and apply air pressure inside the throat and down into the ports.
  • Pilot Flame Check: Periodically check the pilot and burner flame visually. The correct pilot flame is blue and extends past the thermopile.
  • Venting System: Periodically examine the venting system and replace damaged parts. Ensure no obstructions to combustion and ventilation air.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides troubleshooting information for common issues such as improper function, gas valve not opening, and pilot outage. It emphasizes checking gas type, wiring, venting, gas inlet pressure, and millivolt readings.
  • Parts Ordering: A "Master Parts Distributor List" is provided for ordering repair parts. For warranty parts, proof of purchase is required. When ordering, provide the model number, serial number, type of gas, part number, and description.
