Questions and Answers

Overview

The Energizer ENK1100/ENK1500/ENK2000 Power Inverter is a heavy-duty device designed to convert low-voltage direct current (DC) from a 12-volt power source into 110-volt modified sine wave (MSW) alternating current (AC). This allows users to power various household appliances and electronic devices from deep-cycle batteries (such as those used in marine, golf cart, and fork-lift applications) or other high-current 12-volt sources. The inverter has been performance tested by MET and complies with Underwriter's Laboratories and Canadian Standards Association safety standards, specifically UL std. 458 and CSA std. C22.2 No. 107.1.

Function Description:

The primary function of this power inverter is to provide AC power from a DC source. It operates in two stages:

  1. DC to DC Conversion: The inverter first increases the DC input voltage from the battery to 145 volts DC.
  2. DC to AC Conversion: It then converts this high-voltage DC into 110V AC (household current) using advanced MOSFET transistors in a full bridge configuration. This design enables the inverter to start and run difficult reactive loads and provides excellent overload capability. The output waveform is a "modified sine wave."

The inverter features a front panel with an LCD Digital Display that can show either OUTPUT WATTAGE or INPUT VOLTAGE, selectable via a MENU button. It includes two USB ports (2.1 Amp shared) for charging tablet devices (2.1A compatible) or other USB-charging devices like cell phones (1A). A POWER Switch controls the inverter's operation. Two standard North American AC outlets, each rated at 15 Amps (1650 Watts), are provided for connecting appliances.

On the rear panel, the inverter is equipped with a High-Speed Cooling Fan that automatically activates when the internal temperature exceeds a preset limit and turns off when the temperature reduces. It has Negative and Positive Power Input Terminals for battery connection, a Remote Control Receptacle, and a Ground Terminal.

Usage Features:

  • Appliance Compatibility: The inverter is designed to power a wide range of appliances. Users need to determine the "starting load" (peak load) and "continuous load" of their appliances. Motorized appliances like pumps, freezers, and air conditioners can have startup loads up to eight times their rated watts.
  • Overload Protection: The inverter automatically shuts down in the event of a power overload to prevent damage.
  • Low Battery Alarm/Shutdown: The LCD display indicates low input voltage (below 10.5 Volts), and the inverter will shut down if the battery voltage drops below 10 Volts.
  • Thermal Shutdown: If the internal temperature gets too hot, the unit will shut down, indicated on the LCD panel. It can be restarted after it cools.
  • USB Charging: Two USB ports provide convenient charging for compatible devices.
  • Battery Bank Sizing: The manual provides guidance on calculating the minimum battery bank ampere-hour rating required based on appliance wattage and estimated run time, considering factors like cable gauge, battery charge level, temperature, age, and condition. Energizer recommends using "deep-cycle" or "marine" rated batteries for optimal performance and longevity.
  • Cable Gauges: Recommended cable gauges are provided for different models (e.g., 4AWG for ENK1100, 2AWG for ENK1500/ENK2000, 0AWG for ENK3000/ENK4000), emphasizing the use of thick, stranded, insulated copper wire in the shortest practical length.
  • Grounding: Proper grounding of the unit to the vehicle's chassis or another ground point is crucial to prevent electrical shock.
  • First Connection Sparking: A momentary spark during the first connection to the positive terminal is normal due to capacitors charging within the inverter.
  • Audible Alarm: A momentary "chirp" may sound when the inverter is turned OFF or connected/disconnected from the battery bank.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cooling Fan: The integrated high-speed cooling fan helps maintain optimal operating temperature by automatically turning on and off as needed.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues such as no input voltage, inverter shutdown (due to low battery or overheating), and low battery alarm, offering solutions like cleaning terminals, replacing fuses, charging/replacing batteries, ensuring adequate ventilation, reducing load, and using appropriate cables.
  • Connection Care: Users are advised to ensure good, secure connections and avoid over-tightening terminals to prevent voltage drops and damage.
  • Fuse Protection: Installation of an ANL type fuse and fuse holder close to the positive battery bank terminal is strongly recommended to protect batteries from accidental DC cable shorts and potential explosions.
  • Environmental Considerations: The inverter should be kept away from direct sunlight and operated in an environment with adequate air circulation, ideally between 60°F and 80°F (15°C and 25°C), and between 4°F and 104°F (-20°C and 40°C).
  • Disposal/Recycling: Electronic products contain toxic materials, and users are advised to contact local authorities for proper disposal and recycling information. The inverter is certified "lead free," but transformers contain nickel composites, which are neuro-toxins if ingested.

Safety Warnings and Cautions:

  • Inverter Output: Treat inverter output like commercial AC power; danger of shock or electrocution. Do not use near flammable materials or in areas with flammable fumes/gases. Avoid contact with water or other liquids. Do not use with damaged or wet cords.
  • Operating Environment: Do not reverse DC input polarity, as this will void the warranty. Ensure adequate ventilation and do not place items on or over the inverter during operation.
  • Appliance Compatibility: Do NOT plug in battery chargers for cordless power tools if they warn of dangerous voltages at battery terminals. Certain chargers for small nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal-hydride batteries can be damaged. Do NOT use with small, battery-operated appliances like flashlights or cordless razors/toothbrushes that plug directly into an AC receptacle. GFCI devices may not work with modified sine wave power.
  • Medical Equipment: This inverter is NOT tested for use with medical equipment and should NOT be used with life support systems or other medical equipment/devices.
  • Marine Applications: This inverter is NOT tested for use in marine applications.
  • Sparking Hazard: Due to the possibility of sparking during connection, position the inverter and battery far from any source of flammable fumes or gases.
  • Cable Management: Route appliance and extension cords to prevent pinching, crushing, abrading, and tripping hazards. Use safety-approved extension cords rated at 15 amps or higher.
  • Battery Charger Monitoring: When powering lead-acid battery chargers with modified sine wave, monitor the charger's temperature for approximately 10 minutes. Disconnect immediately if it becomes abnormally warm.
  • Mounting: The inverter should not be mounted under the hood of a vehicle. Mount horizontally in a dry, cool, ventilated area closest to the battery, ensuring no wires, fuel lines, or tanks are behind drilling locations. Use corrosion-resistant fasteners.

The Energizer ENK1100/ENK1500/ENK2000 Power Inverter is a robust and versatile solution for portable AC power needs, provided all safety guidelines and operational instructions are followed carefully.
