Overview

This document serves as a user manual for Epoch Batteries, specifically for models B12460 and B12300. It provides essential information regarding the safe operation, configuration, and maintenance of these lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. The manual emphasizes the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to prevent property damage, personal injury, or voiding the warranty.

The Epoch Batteries are designed with a focus on stability, high cycle life, and user-friendly features. They utilize Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, known for its inherent safety and long lifespan, making them a reliable choice for various applications. A key aspect of these batteries is their integrated Bluetooth communication capability, which allows users to monitor battery performance in real-time through a dedicated app. This app provides access to historical data, documentation, and quick contact information for support, enhancing the user's ability to manage and understand their battery's status.

Beyond Bluetooth, the batteries also feature CAN bus communications, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of third-party systems. This allows for seamless integration into more complex power setups, offering flexibility for different applications. For physical installation, the batteries are equipped with detachable mounting tabs, providing secure mounting options on various surfaces and adapting to diverse installation environments.

Safety is a paramount concern in the design of Epoch Batteries, which incorporate a custom Battery Management System (BMS). This BMS is a comprehensive safety feature that includes automatic cell balancing, which helps prolong the battery's life and maintain optimal performance. It also provides high/low current protection, safeguarding against overcurrent or undercurrent conditions that could damage the battery or connected devices. High/low voltage protection prevents the battery from being overcharged or excessively discharged, further extending its lifespan and ensuring safe operation. Additionally, the BMS offers high/low temperature protection, preventing the battery from operating outside its safe temperature range, which is crucial for lithium-ion chemistries. Short circuit protection is also integrated, providing immediate shutdown in the event of a short circuit to prevent damage and potential hazards.

The physical construction of the batteries is robust, with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. This means the batteries are fully submersible for up to 30 seconds in 1 meter of water, making them suitable for use in challenging environments where exposure to dust and moisture is common. The case material is UL94 Grade V-0 fireproof, designed to self-extinguish within 10 seconds, adding another layer of safety. The batteries are also built with shock and vibration resistance, ensuring their components are protected even in harsh and demanding conditions, which is particularly beneficial for mobile or off-grid applications. A pressure vent is included to release any accumulated pressure during high current usage, contributing to the overall safety of the device. Furthermore, internal heating allows for safe charging even in freezing conditions, expanding the operational temperature range and ensuring consistent performance in colder climates.

Operating the Epoch Batteries is straightforward. They are powered on and off manually using a power button. A blue LED illuminates when the battery is on. To accept a charge, the battery must be powered on. It is recommended to power off the battery before placing it in storage to conserve energy. If left powered on without a load, the battery will enter a low-power state after 12 hours, which can be exited by applying a 5A or greater load (charging or discharging). For charging, it's crucial to ensure the battery is powered on and that the charging source is optimized for lithium batteries with at least a 5A output. If the battery is fully depleted, a specific procedure involving connecting the charging source, waiting 2-3 minutes, and then pressing and holding the power button until the blue light illuminates is required.

The Bluetooth and app functionality enhance the user experience significantly. To connect, the battery must be powered on, and Bluetooth must be enabled on the mobile device. Android devices running Android 10+ will require location services to be enabled for Bluetooth scanning. The app, "Epoch Batteries" or "Epoch Li-Ion," can be downloaded from app stores or the Epoch Batteries website. Once installed, users grant Bluetooth access, select their battery from a list of devices, and can then view real-time performance data. The app also provides access to historical data, documentation, and contact information through a "More" section.

Configuration options include connecting batteries in parallel or series. For parallel connections, it is highly recommended to use a busbar for energy distribution and balancing. Up to four batteries can be connected in parallel. Before making any connections, all batteries must be fully charged and powered off. Positive terminals connect to a positive busbar, and negative terminals to a negative busbar, with each battery having its own busbar post. For series connections, also up to four batteries, the same pre-connection steps apply. The positive terminal of one battery connects to the negative terminal of another. The manual also details DIP switch settings for battery address, series/parallel configuration, end-of-bank settings, and inverter/CAN termination resistors, allowing for precise customization of the battery system.

Maintenance features are primarily managed by the integrated BMS, which automatically handles cell balancing and various protections, reducing the need for manual intervention. The robust design and IP67 rating also contribute to low maintenance requirements in terms of environmental protection. For disposal, the manual emphasizes proper recycling in accordance with local laws and regulations, as the product contains lithium batteries and other recyclable materials. Epoch Batteries encourages customers to recycle retired batteries and provides contact information for further guidance.

The warranty information outlines the registration process, requiring registration within 60 days of purchase for full coverage. Unregistered systems receive a one-year warranty. The warranty is non-transferable and covers the original purchaser. Exclusions from the warranty include damage from improper installation, use, maintenance, or service, loose terminal connections, reverse polarity, inappropriate storage conditions (extreme temperatures, fire, water submersion, or fully discharged state), short circuits, impact damage, under/over charging, use with failing third-party products, high resistance from corroded terminals or poor crimps, faulty electrical systems, modifications to the battery, use in unintended applications, lack of charging for over a year, or commercial use with repeated deep discharges. This comprehensive approach to design, operation, and maintenance ensures a reliable and safe power solution for users.
