Overview

This document describes the EQAS AS-5 series heaters, designed for use exclusively with baptismal pools manufactured by Fiberglass Specialties, Inc. The EQAS AS-5 replaces older models (EQAS H-5, S-5, H-11 & S-11) to align with current building codes.

Function Description:

The EQAS AS-5 is a heating system for baptismal pools, incorporating a circulation pump, a heater, and an accessory controller for automated functions. It includes features for water level control (auto-fill and auto-drain), temperature regulation, and timed operation. The system relies on water pressure in the baptistry for the circulation pump to operate.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Service: 40 amp, 240v for the EQAS AS-5. If combined with an EQAS Booster, it requires 60 amp, 240 volt.
  • Piping: Minimum 1 1/2" I.D. schedule 40, PVC water pipe for all inlet and outlet connections.
  • Water Level Sensor: The fill port is installed approximately 6" above the baptistry floor, and the water level pressure switch is installed 10" below the rim of the baptistry.
  • Air Switches: Supplied with two 10' tubes for controlling start/stop, fill, and drain functions. These are non-electrical and override the time clock.
  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI): An electrical contractor must provide and install a GFCI for all electrical connections to the heater and accessories.
  • Bonding: A #8 AWG solid copper bonding conductor is required between the unit and all other electrical equipment and exposed metal.

Usage Features:

  • System Timer: A 7-day time clock allows for automatic control. The dial should only be turned clockwise to set the time; turning it counter-clockwise will cause permanent damage. Each tooth on the timer represents 2 hours of operation.
  • Temperature Control: A thermostat allows users to set the desired water temperature. It's recommended to always check water temperature with an accurate thermometer, as thermostats may have an error margin of up to 4°.
  • Auto Fill/Auto Drain System:
    • Fill: When the air button is pressed and water is turned on, the water level pressure switch activates the fill port. Filling stops when the water level reaches 4" above the pressure switch. If the water level drops 2" below normal, the fill port reactivates. These levels are factory preset.
    • Drain: When the pool is full and the auto-fill system is active, pressing the air button once disables auto-fill and opens the electric drain. Pressing it again reactivates auto-fill and closes the drain. A toggle switch on the drain valve can be used if the system is draining and filling simultaneously.
  • Air Switches: Two air switches are provided for non-electrical start/stop, fill, and drain functions. They can be mounted on the pool lip or other convenient locations and override the time clock.
  • Diagnostic Center: The heater features indicator lights for "Heater On," "Timer Bypass," "System Fuse," "High-Limit Tripped," and "System Mis-Wired" to aid in troubleshooting.
  • System Interface Module: This module provides status indicators for "Module Power On," "Fill Mode Active," "Water Level 1," "Water Level 2" (both must be lit for operation), and "Drain Mode Active." It also has receptacles for fill valve, drain valve, and water level connections, and an air switch for drain/fill.

Maintenance Features:

  • Flow Control Valves: Red-handled flow control valves are included and can be placed in the suction and return lines to contain water during maintenance. The valve on the suction side must always be wide open, while the return line valve can be adjusted to control flow rate.
  • Accessibility: The heater should be located in an accessible area for servicing.
  • Union Connections: All glued parts should be reassembled with o-rings and gaskets in place on union connections, which should only be hand-tightened to prevent cracking and leaks.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section for common issues like "Nothing Operates" and "No Pump Operation," with recommended actions such as checking breakers, adjusting the time clock, resetting the high limit switch, and ensuring components are plugged in.
  • Warranty: Fiberglass Specialties, Inc. warrants the heater to be free from defects for one year from installation (or six months from shipment). The warranty is voided by improper maintenance, excessive water harshness, incorrect water chemistry, or freezing.

Important Safety Instructions and Warnings:

  • Indoor Use Only: The heater is designed for indoor use.
  • Electrical Safety: Only a licensed electrician experienced in spa/baptismal pool heaters should install the unit. An emergency switch must be provided, readily accessible, and installed at least 5 feet (1.52m) away and within sight of the pool.
  • Water Level: Never operate the pump or heater without proper water level in the pool to prevent abnormally high temperatures and component failure.
  • Temperature Limits: Do not heat water above 102°F (39°C). Temperatures above 100°F (38°C) are considered safe for healthy adults only. Hotter water increases the risk of hypothermia, especially for children, elderly persons, and individuals with medical conditions or on medication. Pregnant women should consult their physicians before being baptized.
  • Water Quality: The system is designed for use with municipal water systems. Using non-potable water voids the warranty.
  • No Tampering: Never tamper with the controls, as scalding may occur if safety controls are not in proper order.
  • Freezing Temperatures: If freezing temperatures are expected, turn off the heater system, drain the pool, and then turn off electrical power.
  • Electrical Disconnection: The main power to the heater system and all other electrical components should be turned off before anyone enters the pool, even if the thermostat or timer has paused heater functions, as live electrical circuits are still present.
  • Clearance: Maintain a minimum of 6" clearance from combustible materials.
  • Water Damage: Locate the system where leaks or ruptures will not cause water damage. FSI is not responsible for water damage.
