Do you have a question about the ERNI EPC 3 X Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The ERNIPRESS CENTER EPC 3x-X is a hydropneumatic press with pneumatic control, designed for the joining of connectors to a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). This pressing-in process is described as a rational, reliable, and environmentally friendly method for joining these components. The press utilizes pressfit tools, which always consist of a top and a bottom tool.

Function Description:

The press operates with a hydropneumatic drive. A pressure transducer charges the lifting cylinder with oil, enabling a purely hydraulic force stroke. The return stroke of the ram is pneumatic. The top tool connects to the ram via a quick-change adapter, while the bottom tool is set into the table. The press-in depth is mechanically adjusted using a knurled nut. The EPC 3x-X can be optionally equipped with a slide table (Pos. 301) for positioning the PCB to the press-in position.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Mode of operation: Hydropneumatic
  • Permanent sound pressure level: < 80 dB (A)
  • Air supply: min 1/4" - max. 7.5 bar (operating pressure must not exceed 7.5 bar)
  • Pressure output for press type at air input pressure of 6.5 bar:
    • EPC 31: 10 kN
    • EPC 33: 30 kN
    • EPC 35: 50 kN
    • EPC 37: 70 kN
  • Air consumption per stroke: approx. 5 liters
  • Ambient temperature: 0 to 35°C
  • Air humidity: 10 to 95 % at 40°C non-condensing
  • Total stroke: 48 mm
  • Force stroke: 4.1 ±0.2 mm
  • Tool height when fitted: 110 to 145 mm
  • Weight: approx. 350 kg
  • Dimensions:
    • Width: 1400 mm
    • Depth: 1000 mm
    • Height: 1135 mm (max. 275 mm for the top part)
    • Working height (press-in height): 1000 to 1100 mm above floor level (recommended)

Usage Features:

The press is designed for the pressing of connectors, single contacts, and other accessories into suitable PCBs. Proper use requires adherence to the operating manual, especially safety advice. The press must be in technically perfect condition and operated according to instructions. Permitted load ratings must not be exceeded. The operating elements include a hand lever (Pos. 401), a force stroke trigger (Pos. 402), and a control panel (Pos. 404). The hand lever's upper position can be adjusted to suit the operator's size or workplace type. This involves loosening a hexagon socket screw (A), pulling the hand lever out of the toothing (B), turning it to the desired position (C), pushing it back, and tightening the screw. Installation requires the press to be set on a stable underframe (workbench or steel profiles) capable of bearing its weight. It must be bolted down at all fixing points (two per foot rail) using M10 bolts. The working area and surroundings should be well-lit (min. 1,000 LUX nominal luminance). During operation, only one person should work at the press. In SETUP mode, the force stroke can be triggered regardless of the hand lever's position, emphasizing the need to keep hands clear of the ram's travel. The ram descends approximately 5 mm during the force stroke, preventing serious injuries.

Maintenance Features:

Regular servicing and maintenance are crucial for the press's reliability and service life. Maintenance and cleaning work should only be carried out when the press is switched off and depressurized. The press and its additional equipment, especially safety devices, must be inspected regularly (at least once a week, depending on usage) for proper condition and function. Particular attention should be paid to the pneumatics and hydraulic cylinder power package. Work on pneumatic and hydraulic equipment should only be carried out by suitably trained specialist personnel. The press must always be depressurized before working on these components due to high operating pressures. Regular inspection for leaks and external damage is required, with defects rectified immediately. When handling lubricants and other operating resources, safety regulations (safety data sheets) must be followed, and disposal must be environmentally compatible. Unauthorized modifications, use of unapproved spare parts, accessories, or special equipment can negatively affect the press's function and void the warranty. Significant damage within the warranty period must be reported to ERNI's customer services department immediately, and the press must remain in its damaged state until released by ERNI.
