Overview

The Escali Ultra Slim Body Composition Scale (Model # BFBW180) is a digital scale designed to measure not only weight but also provide a comprehensive analysis of body composition. This device utilizes Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology to estimate various body metrics, making it a useful tool for individuals monitoring their health and fitness.

Function Description

The primary function of the Escali Ultra Slim Body Composition Scale is to provide detailed body composition measurements in addition to standard weight readings. It is designed for use by adults and children (10-17 years old) to measure weight and bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) technology to estimate body fat, total body water percentage, bone mass, and muscle mass. The scale stores up to 8 unique user profiles, allowing multiple individuals to track their progress over time. Each user profile can store data for up to 7 previous measurements, enabling users to compare current readings with past performance. The scale features an "o" scroll display to navigate through user profiles and display various body composition measurements.

The scale measures the following metrics:

  • Weight: Displayed in pounds (lb), kilograms (kg), or stones (st).
  • Body Fat Percentage: Estimates the percentage of fat in the body. The manual provides suggested ranges for both men and women across different age groups (20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+), categorized as Low, Normal, Moderately High, and High. For men, normal ranges are typically 13-20% (20-29), 14-21% (30-39), 16-23% (40-49), 17-24% (50-59), and 18-25% (60+). For women, normal ranges are 19-28% (20-29), 20-29% (30-39), 21-30% (40-49), 22-31% (50-59), and 23-32% (60+).
  • Body Water Percentage (Hydration Level): Indicates the percentage of water in the body. Suggested ranges are provided for both men and women, with optimal body water ranges for men being 63% to 70% (4% to 14% body fat), 57% to 63% (14% to 21% body fat), 55% to 57% (22% to 24% body fat), and 37% to 55% (25% and over body fat). For women, optimal ranges are 58% to 70% (4% to 20% body fat), 52% to 58% (21% to 29% body fat), 49% to 52% (30% to 32% body fat), and 37% to 49% (33% and over body fat).
  • Muscle Mass Percentage: Estimates the percentage of muscle mass. Approximately 40% of total body weight for men and approximately 30% of total body weight for women are suggested ranges.
  • Bone Mass Percentage: Estimates the percentage of bone mass. The average bone mass percentage for both men and women is between 4% to 5% of total body weight.

The scale is designed to be used on a hard, flat, and level surface for accurate readings. Uneven surfaces or carpets can affect measurement precision. The electronic sensors are very sensitive, so dropping or jarring the scale should be avoided.

Usage Features

  • User Profile Creation: The scale allows for the creation and editing of up to 8 unique user profiles. To create a new user profile, users press the ENTER button, then use the LEFT or RIGHT arrow buttons to select a profile number, and press ENTER to confirm.
  • Setting User Data: For each profile, users can input their gender (male/female), height, and age using the LEFT or RIGHT arrow buttons and confirming with ENTER.
  • Measurement Process: To take a measurement, the user steps onto the scale with clean and dry bare feet, ensuring contact with the metal foot placers. The scale will display weight first, then cycle through the various body composition measurements (body fat, body water, muscle mass, bone density).
  • Athlete Mode: The scale includes an "Athlete Mode" for individuals who exercise at least 10 hours per week and have been doing so consistently for the last 6 months or longer. This mode can be activated by pressing ENTER when "CLRn" appears on the display, then selecting "N" to continue or "Y" to reset the profile. Activating Athlete Mode adjusts the algorithm for more accurate body composition readings for athletes.
  • Instant On Technology: The scale turns on automatically when a user steps on it, eliminating the need for a power button.
  • Automatic Shut-off: The scale automatically turns off after 15 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life.
  • Error Messages: The scale displays "----" if it is overloaded. To resolve this, the user should step off the scale.
  • FCC Compliance: The device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules, ensuring it operates within acceptable limits for radio frequency interference.
