split plate return electrodes.
Ethicon recommends the use of
a MEGADYNE™ MEGA SOFT™
Reusable Patient Return Electrode.
On/O power switch
Press to turn on generator.
Switch will illuminate
green. Once startup and
self-diagnostic check are
complete, dashed lines appear
in power setting windows.
Bipolar receptacle
Accepts a footswitching (2-pin)

Press footswitch or close tips of bipolar
forceps (when using auto bipolar) to
activate attached instrument.*
Bipolar current meter
tone button
Press to activate or deactivate
bipolar current meter tone.
During use, starts o as a rapid
tone then reduces to a slower,
metered tone as current low
is diminished.
Power up/down buttons
In all coagulation modes and in PURE and BLEND cut modes,
arrows adjust power in 1-watt increments up to 40 watts and in
increments of 5 watts thereafter. In the GEM cut mode, arrows
switch mode from GEM High (H) to GEM Low (L). In bipolar modes,
arrows adjust power in 1-watt increments up to 80 watts.
*Bipolar and monopolar accessories may not be activated simultaneously. Only one monopolar accessory can be activated at a time.
Bipolar current meter
Provides a visual indication of current low.
As tissue becomes desiccated and dries,
current low is diminished, as illustrated by
light bars on current monitor.

Overview

The MEGADYNE™ Electrosurgical Generator is a medical device designed to provide multiple cut, coagulation, and bipolar modes, with adjustable power settings to optimize energy delivery for targeted tissue.

Function Description

The generator offers various modes for different surgical needs:

  • Cutting Modes:

    • PURE: Provides a standard cutting effect.
    • BLEND: Offers a combination of cutting and coagulation.
    • GEM (Geometric Electron Modulation): Automatically controls the output power for a consistent cutting effect.
      • GEM High: Designed for surgical speed and efficiency, especially when used with a MEGADYNE™ ACE/GEM electrode (132811-200218).
      • GEM Low: Provides approximately half the power of GEM High mode, designed for more tactile feedback, especially when used with a MEGADYNE™ ACE/GEM electrode (132808-200218).
  • Coagulation Modes:

    • COAG 1: Allows the active electrode to efficiently move through tissue for coagulation with dissection.
    • COAG 2: Delivers a more gradual onset of energy, resulting in a mild delivery of coagulation with dissection.
    • SPRAY (Fulguration Mode): Designed to provide hemostasis over a broader area with less depth-of-tissue damage compared to desiccation.
    • SOFT COAG: Designed to provide coagulation and desiccation at a slow rate with deep thermal penetration.
  • Bipolar Modes:

    • MICRO: Delivers consistent power for standard bipolar applications, providing a precise and controlled bipolar effect.
    • MACRO: Delivers a rapid onset of power and higher voltage power output compared to MICRO.
    • AUTO: Senses tissue impedance to automatically start and stop bipolar energy delivery, eliminating the need for a bipolar footswitch.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Adjustment:
    • In all coagulation modes and PURE and BLEND cut modes, power is adjusted in 1-watt increments up to 40 watts, and in 5-watt increments thereafter.
    • In bipolar modes, power is adjusted in 1-watt increments up to 80 watts.
    • In GEM cut mode, arrows switch between GEM High (H) and GEM Low (L).
  • Patient Return Electrode: The device accepts both single plate and split plate return electrodes. Ethicon recommends using a MEGADYNE™ MEGA SOFT™ Reusable Patient Return Electrode.
  • Accessory Receptacles:
    • Monopolar: Accepts two handswitching accessories, or one footswitching and one handswitching accessory. Only one monopolar accessory can be activated at a time.
    • Bipolar: Accepts a footswitching (2-pin) or handswitching (3-pin) accessory.
  • Simultaneous Activation: Bipolar and monopolar accessories may not be activated simultaneously.

Usage Features

  • Power Up/Down Buttons: Used to adjust power settings in various modes.
  • Recall Button:
    • After startup, pressing this button recalls the last mode and power setting used.
    • During use, it toggles between modes while maintaining the last power setting.
  • Bipolar Current Meter: Provides a visual indication of current flow through light bars. As tissue desiccates, current flow diminishes.
  • Auto Bipolar Button: Activates AUTO bipolar mode. Pressing it selects a 1-second delay (LONG), 0.5-second delay (SHORT), or no delay (ON) before energy delivery.
  • Bipolar Current Meter Tone Button: Activates or deactivates the bipolar current meter tone. The tone starts as rapid and reduces to a slower, metered tone as current flow diminishes.
  • Patient Return Electrode Alarm:
    • Lights green when the patient return electrode is connected and the CQM circuit is complete.
    • Lights red, accompanied by an audible alarm, when the circuit is broken or the electrode is disconnected.
  • On/Off Power Switch: Turns the generator on. The switch illuminates green. After startup and self-diagnostic checks, dashed lines appear in the power setting windows.
  • Power Settings Guidance: Settings vary by surgeon preference. To increase intensity, increase power; to decrease intensity, lower power. If a proper setting is unknown, start at a low setting and increase until the desired effect is achieved.
  • Error Codes: To clear an error, turn the generator off and then on. If the error persists, record the code and contact Ethicon Customer Support Center (1-877-ETHICON in the US).

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning:
    • Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet before cleaning.
    • Use a mild detergent or disinfectant and a damp cloth.
    • Do not use abrasive, corrosive, or caustic cleaning or disinfectant agents, as they can scratch the front panel or damage the generator.
    • Do not allow fluids to drain inside the generator.
