Do you have a question about the evertz exponent 500FR and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Evertz 500FR is a 3 rack unit high rack frame designed for the 500 series exponent modular system. It serves as a housing for up to 16 of the 500 series distribution, conversion, and processing modules, allowing for various combinations to meet the demanding needs of television studios. The frame is engineered for high-density capacity to conserve rack space and provides sufficient thermal relief for up to 120 watts of processing power, accommodating future high-speed processing cards.

Function Description:

The 500FR frame provides a robust and flexible platform for integrating Evertz 500 series modules. It features hot-swappable redundant switching power supplies and cooling fans, ensuring continuous operation and signal integrity even during maintenance. The front-loading design allows for easy extraction of power supplies and active modules without requiring access to the rear of the frame or re-cabling, which is crucial for maintaining performance, especially at high data rates like 1.5Gb/s.

The frame is available in different versions to suit specific applications:

  • 500FR: An AC-powered frame that supports all 500 series modules, with the exception of analog or digital loop-through modules.
  • 500FR-L-A: An AC-powered frame with loop-through capability specifically for analog video signals. This version supports only analog loop-through modules.
  • 500FR-L-D: An AC-powered frame with loop-through capability for digital video signals. This version supports only digital loop-through modules.

Important Technical Specifications:

Electrical:

  • AC Mains Input: Auto-ranging, 100 ⇔ 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz.
  • Maximum Operating Current: 2.6 A (@ 120 VAC), 1.4 A (@ 240 VAC).
  • Maximum Power Consumption: 200 W.
  • Maximum Module Load: 160 W (10 W per slot).
  • Power Supply Configuration: Dual, redundant, with separate AC inlets.
  • Connector: IEC 60320 - 1 per power supply.
  • Fuses: 4 amp, 250 volt time delay 5 x 20 mm. – 2 per power supply.
  • Safety: CSA Listed to CSA C22.2 No. 60065-03, UL 60065-03, IEC 60065-(2001-12) 7th Edition.
  • EMC: Complies with CE Low voltage Directive 93/68/EEC, FCC part 15, class A, and EU EMC directive 89/336/EEC.
  • Status Indicators: PSU status LED, Local Error/Failure LED.
  • Tally Output Connector: 4 pin terminal, relay N/O, N/C for status/fault alarm, 2 A, 125 VDC max.
  • Temperature: 0 - 40°C.

Physical:

  • Height: 5.25" (133 mm).
  • Width: 19" (483 mm).
  • Depth: 9.5" (368 mm).
  • Module Capacity: 16 slots.
  • Weight: Approximately 17 lbs (7.7 Kg) with 2 power supplies, no slots occupied; approximately 32 lbs (14.5 Kg) with 2 power supplies, all slots occupied.

Usage Features:

  • Module Capacity: Houses up to 16 processing modules. 500FR-L versions are used for loop-through modules.
  • Monitoring: Features a front monitoring window for verifying module and power supply status.
  • Alarm System: Frame status contact closure alarm signals power supply or fan failures and user-selectable module alarms.
  • Accessibility: Front extractable modules, power supplies, and fans.
  • Power Supply: Auto-ranging power supply operates from 90-250VAC at 60/50Hz. Power supply and frame cooling fans are fully redundant and hot-swappable.
  • Bussing and Control: High-speed bussing and control system provided for modular applications.
  • Loop-Through Capabilities (500FR-L-A and 500FR-L-D versions only):
    • Ability to provide a single input source to multiple loop-through modules in a single frame.
    • Hot swapping of loop-through modules without impacting the input signal to other loop-through modules.
    • Supports up to 16 Analog loop-through modules (500FR-L-A only).
    • Supports up to 16 (SD) or 12 (HD) Digital loop-through modules (500FR-L-D only).
  • Power On/Off: Each 500PS power supply has its own power switch. Turning off one supply allows the remaining supply to power the frame. Both power supplies must be turned off to completely remove power.
  • Power Supply Status Indicators: Each power supply has two status indicator LEDs. The green PSU STATUS LED indicates the health of the local power supply. The red FRAME STATUS LED indicates the health of the entire frame and is operated by the frame status bus. The FRAME STATUS LED is off under normal conditions and on when there are Frame Status Fault conditions. If a power supply malfunctions (e.g., power cord disconnected, switch off, fuse blown, rear fan stopped), its PSU STATUS LED will go off, and the red FRAME STATUS LED on both power supplies will turn on. If the frame is connected to VistaLINK®, the power supply fault will send a trap message.
  • Frame Status Tally Terminal Block: A green terminal block at the rear of the frame provides normally open and normally closed relay contacts for external equipment to indicate frame status fault conditions. The relay contacts can sink up to 2A and operate up to 125 VDC.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cooling: The 500FR frame is designed for adequate cooling for up to 120 watts of processing power. Fans at the front and rear of each power supply module provide forced air cooling. Interior cooling channels ensure that even fully loaded frames mounted adjacently operate within the normal temperature range. For proper cooling, the frame must contain either two 500PS power supplies or one 500PS power supply and one 500PS-FM power supply blank panel with a cooling fan. Fan inlets and exhaust openings must be kept free of obstructions.
  • Fuse Replacement: The fuse holder is located inside the power entry module and contains two 4 amp, 250 volt time delay 5 x 20 mm fuses (T4AL250V). Spare fuses are provided in a vinyl pouch in the manual. Fuses should only be replaced with those of the correct value.
  • Power Supply Replacement: Power supplies are hot-swappable and can be replaced from the front without interrupting signal integrity. Each power supply is a complete assembly, including its cooling fan and one frame cooling fan. A machine screw through the rear panel secures the power supply and must be removed before extraction. After replacing the power supply, the mounting screw must be reinstalled to reduce the risk of electric shock. The frame should not be run for extended periods with one power supply removed; either both power supplies or one power supply and a 500PS-FM blank panel must be inserted for proper cooling.
  • Module Installation/Removal: To insert or remove modules, the front panel must be opened by turning two captive screws counter-clockwise. Modules are oriented vertically with the white card ejector on the bottom and slide into corresponding card guides and rear panel connectors. To remove, press the card ejector down to release and pull the module out. Modules should be placed in a safe, static-discharge-free environment.
  • Servicing: Servicing instructions are for use by qualified service personnel only to reduce the risk of electric shock.
