Questions and Answers

Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions and warnings for the safe and effective use of the Fame Audio Discovery 15AS DSP/18AS DSP, an active subwoofer designed for music and speech signals. It emphasizes safety, proper installation, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Function Description

The Fame Audio Discovery 15AS DSP/18AS DSP is an active subwoofer, meaning it has a built-in amplifier. It is specifically optimized for processing music and speech signals, delivering enhanced low-frequency sound. The device incorporates Digital Signal Processing (DSP) functions, allowing users to customize various audio parameters to suit different acoustic environments and preferences. These DSP functions include main volume level adjustment, mode selection (Normal, Cardioid, Endfire), location optimization, delay effects, polarity inversion, and crossover frequency settings. The subwoofer is designed to be integrated into a larger sound system, working in conjunction with active Discovery Series speakers.

Usage Features

The device offers a range of features for flexible and precise audio control:

Setup and Connections: Before operation, all connections should be made using high-quality, undamaged, and as short as possible cables. The audio input connector supports both XLR and 6.35mm combo jack sockets, accommodating balanced and unbalanced connections. The device includes two XLR outputs for connecting to other audio equipment.

DSP Functions:

  • Main Volume Level: This function allows users to adjust the subwoofer's volume from MUTE to +10dB, appearing upon initialization.
  • Mode Selection: Users can choose from presets to optimize the subwoofer's performance based on its placement relative to the main sound system. "Normal" is for individual subwoofer use, while "Enforce" is for specific configurations before the sound system.
  • Location Optimization: This menu allows for optimizing subwoofer feedback when used alone or in groups. Options include:
    • Normal: For individual subwoofer use.
    • Cardioid: For a cardioid effect when subwoofers are used in group mode, helping to control sound dispersion.
    • Endfire: For configurations with two subwoofers placed longitudinally behind each other, enhancing directional bass.
  • Delay Effects: A delay can be added to the subwoofer, measured in meters, to synchronize its output with other speakers in the system.
  • Polarity Inversion: This feature allows users to invert the polarity of the input signals, which can be crucial for phase alignment with other speakers.
  • X-Over (Crossover Frequency): This menu sets the upper limit of the subwoofer's frequency range. Optimal settings match the minimum frequency correctly reproduced by the active speakers, with available values including presets for Discovery Series speakers (TR15, TR12, TR10) and specific frequencies (150Hz, 120Hz, 100Hz, 80Hz, 60Hz).
  • Delay Unit: Users can select the unit of measurement for delay (meters or feet).
  • LED Settings: The front panel LED behavior can be configured:
    • OFF: The LED never lights up.
    • ON: The LED is constantly lit in blue.
    • LIMIT: The LED lights up blue during normal operation and red when the limit is reached, indicating potential overload.
  • Reset: The system can be reset to factory default settings.
  • Info: Provides information about the current firmware version.
  • Exit: Returns to the main volume level setting.

Controls: The device features an LCD display for navigating DSP functions, a control dial/button for activation and selection, and a power switch. It also includes a fuse holder and a power outlet.

Portability: The subwoofer is equipped with carrying handles for easier transport and an M20 screwed flange for secure mounting.
