Overview

The CanDo® Digi-Squeeze® is a progressive hand exerciser designed to develop finger, hand, and forearm strength, flexibility, and coordination. It is a compact, ergonomic device, typically shaped like a rounded, somewhat flattened oval with five distinct indentations on one side for finger placement and a larger, crescent-shaped indentation on the opposite side for thumb placement. The device is available in various color-coded firmness levels, allowing for progressive resistance training.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Digi-Squeeze® is to provide resistance for hand and finger exercises, aiding in the development of individual finger strength, flexibility, and coordination, as well as overall hand and forearm strength. Users grip the device and perform various squeezing motions, targeting different muscle groups in the hand and fingers. The progressive resistance levels allow individuals to gradually increase the challenge as their strength improves, making it suitable for rehabilitation, athletic training, or general fitness.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Firmness Levels: The Digi-Squeeze® is available in five progressive color-coded firmness levels:
    • Yellow: X-Light
    • Red: Light
    • Green: Medium
    • Blue: Firm
    • Black: X-Firm
  • Sizes: Each firmness level is available in three sizes: small, medium, and large. This variety ensures that users can select a device that comfortably fits their hand size, optimizing the effectiveness of the exercises.
  • Product Codes:

  • Material: While not explicitly stated, the visual representation and function suggest a durable, resilient material, likely a polymer or rubber compound, designed to withstand repeated compression and return to its original shape. The indentations are gray, contrasting with the main body color, to guide finger placement.
  • Patented Design: The device incorporates a patented design, indicating unique features or mechanisms that contribute to its functionality.

Usage Features:

The Digi-Squeeze® offers a variety of exercises to target different aspects of hand and finger strength. Users are advised to perform exercises at a slow, comfortable pace and to position the device with the product name facing away from the palm to ensure correct hand positioning.

  • Gross Grasp: This exercise involves placing fingers in the appropriate gray finger indentations and the thumb in the gray thumb indentation closest to the index finger. The user then flexes the thumb and all fingers toward the center of the unit as if making a fist. For the right hand, the index finger is placed on the leftmost gray indentation, with other fingers naturally falling into adjacent indentations.
  • Hook Position: Similar to the Gross Grasp, but users utilize only their fingertips on the individual gray finger indentations, with the thumb resting naturally in its indentation (not on the tip). Fingers are kept slightly bent, and all fingers are flexed toward the center of the unit.
  • Key Pinch: Starting from the Gross Grasp position, this exercise focuses on thumb strength. The thumb tip is utilized, while fingers rest naturally in their indentations. The user flexes the thumb toward the center of the unit with the thumb tip slightly bent.
  • Trigger Pinch: The index finger is placed on the second gray finger indentation from the left, and the thumb is placed on the most comfortable gray thumb indentation. The user then presses the index finger as if squeezing a trigger.
  • Tip-to-Tip Pinch: This exercise involves placing the tip of the thumb on the most comfortable gray thumb indentation and positioning the finger to be exercised on one of the gray finger indentations. Both tips are kept slightly bent, and the thumb and the exercised finger are flexed toward the center of the unit simultaneously.
  • Fingertip Flexion: Starting from the Gross Grasp position, all fingertips are placed on the gray finger indentations, and the thumb tip is placed on the gray thumb indentation. With all fingertips bent, the user flexes the thumb and all fingers toward the center of the unit simultaneously.
  • Finger (MP) Intrinsic Flexion: Starting from the Gross Grasp position, users flex only the MP (metacarpophalangeal) joints against the gray indentations, while keeping the PIP (proximal interphalangeal) and DIP (distal interphalangeal) joints extended.

Precautions:

  • Individuals with a hand injury or disorder should consult a healthcare professional before starting exercises.
  • The position of the Digi-Squeeze® in the hand, exercise intensity, resistance level, and number of repetitions should be approved by a healthcare professional.
  • Discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional if unusual swelling, skin discoloration, or pain occurs.

Maintenance Features:

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features such as cleaning instructions. However, given the nature of the device (a hand exerciser made of a resilient material), it is likely designed for easy cleaning with mild soap and water, and air drying. The durability of the material suggests it requires minimal specific maintenance beyond general hygiene.

  • Manufactured by Fabrication Enterprises Inc. (FEI), located in Elmsford, NY, USA.
