Overview

The Fender Automatic Series amplifier is a finely tuned musical instrument designed for guitarists seeking a no-nonsense approach to tone shaping and gain restructuring. It offers a range of features suitable for practice, small gigs, and achieving classic Fender tones, clean crisp sounds, or powerful modern distortion.

Function Description:

The Automatic Series amplifier provides 25 Watts of power and includes classic Fender Reverb. Its core functionality revolves around five preset tone/gain buttons, allowing users to switch between various sounds, from clean Fender tones to ultimate overdrive. The amplifier features convenient front panel-mounted controls and input jacks for ease of use.

The INPUT jack is where you connect your guitar. Adjacent to it is the Sensitivity/Gain Switch, which adjusts the input signal's sensitivity. When pressed in, it provides a 7dB cut, useful for reducing distortion in clean settings when using guitars with active electronics or humbucking pickups. The normal 'out' position is optimized for single-coil pickups.

The amplifier offers several preset buttons to sculpt your sound:

  • The FENDER-CLEAN preset button activates a classic clean tone.
  • The STUDIO-CLEAN preset button, when pressed, adds a mild boost in the upper mid to high-frequency range and provides slightly more overall gain than the Fender-Clean preset.
  • The RHYTHM/CRUNCH preset button (available in both Automatic GT and SE models) rearranges the gain/tone structure to produce a semi-distorted tone, ideal for rhythm or bluesy leads, with more overall loudness than the clean presets.
  • The RHYTHM/DRIVE preset button (also for both GT and SE models) further modifies the structure to provide more gain, loudness, and a different tonal response than the rhythm/crunch preset.
  • The LEAD/OVERDRIVE preset button (for both GT and SE models) activates a sound useful for playing full-on leads and heavy power chords with significant sustain and drive. When this button is engaged, any previously selected clean or rhythm preset is disabled.

Users can combine various presets by simultaneously pressing two or more preset buttons (from Fender-Clean through Lead/Overdrive) to create even more tonal possibilities.

The FTSW (Footswitch) LED illuminates when the LEAD/OVERDRIVE preset is active, whether selected via the front panel button or the optional footswitch.

The VOLUME knob adjusts the overall loudness of the amplifier. The TREBLE knob adjusts the amount of boost or cut in the high-frequency range for all presets. The BASS knob adjusts the amount of boost or cut in the low-frequency range for all presets.

For spatial effects, the REVERB knob adjusts the amount of reverberation for all presets. The CHORUS INDICATOR LED illuminates when the chorus circuit is active, with its brightness varying to indicate the chorus sweep rate. The CHORUS knob automatically adjusts both the depth and sweep rate of the chorus circuitry; lower settings produce a slow, full-range sweep, while higher settings produce a faster and less wide sweep. The CHORUS SWITCH activates the chorus circuitry for all presets.

The amplifier also includes Tape/CD Inputs, allowing you to play back accompaniment or learning tapes through your amp. These inputs accept any line-level stereo or mono signal and have fixed gain, unaffected by front panel controls. The output level control of the external signal source should be used to manage its volume, while the front panel VOLUME control balances the instrument.

A Footswitch Jack allows for on-off switching of the Chorus and Lead/Overdrive Channel using an optional two-button footswitch (P/N 029972). For proper footswitch operation, both the LEAD/OVERDRIVE switch and the CHORUS switch must be in the 'out' position. An unshielded speaker-type cord is preferable to a coax guitar cord for the footswitch.

The Headphone Jack provides an output for standard mono or stereo headphones for private listening. It can also serve as an unbalanced line output and automatically disables the speaker when in use.

The POWER INDICATOR LED illuminates when the amplifier is receiving power. The POWER SWITCH turns the AC power ON and OFF, completely shutting down the amplifier when OFF.

Usage Features:

The Automatic Series amplifiers are designed with user convenience in mind. The front panel controls are intuitively laid out, making it easy to dial in desired tones. The ability to combine presets offers a wide sonic palette, encouraging experimentation and customization. The footswitch capability allows for seamless on-stage switching between lead/overdrive and chorus effects, enhancing live performance flexibility.

The inclusion of Tape/CD inputs makes the amplifier an excellent tool for practice, allowing musicians to play along with backing tracks or instructional material. The headphone jack provides a private practice solution, which is particularly useful in situations where loud playing might disturb others.

The Automatic GT model is voiced for rock and metal, while the Automatic SE model is voiced for blues and country, catering to different musical styles and preferences. This specialized voicing ensures that each model delivers tones optimized for its intended genre.

Maintenance Features:

The exclusive covering on your Fender Automatic cabinet is designed for years of lasting beauty. For cleaning, a very light soapy solution on a sponge can be used to remove dirt and residue. It is crucial to be careful not to let any liquid come into contact with the operating surfaces.

Important Safety Precautions for Maintenance:

  • ALWAYS UNPLUG THE POWER CORD BEFORE CLEANING.
  • WAIT UNTIL THE UNIT IS COMPLETELY DRY BEFORE PLUGGING IT IN.

The amplifier is equipped with a grounding-type supply cord to reduce the possibility of shock hazard. It must be connected to a grounded AC receptacle, and the line cord should be connected to a suitable power source in accordance with the voltage and frequency specified on the rear panel. DO NOT ALTER THE THREE PRONG PLUG.

In case the amplifier does not function correctly after checking basic connections (power cord, outlet power, control knob positions, instrument volume, and instrument cable), it is recommended to consult an authorized Fender Service Center. The device contains no user-serviceable parts inside, and all servicing should be referred to qualified personnel.
