Do you have a question about the Fervi T999/230V and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document provides an operation and maintenance manual for the FERVI Gear Head Lathe, models Art. T999/230V, T999/230V3A, T999/400V, and T999/400V3A. It is designed to equip operators with the necessary knowledge for safe and effective use, installation, and maintenance of the machine.

Function Description

The FERVI Gear Head Lathe is a machine tool with a horizontal axis, designed for machining metallic materials through cold chip removal. The cutting motion is achieved by the workpiece rotating on its own axis, while the tool provides the feed motion. The machine is entirely manually operated, meaning all movements are under the direct control of the operator.

The lathe is designed and built to perform the following operations on all types of ferrous metals:

  • Cylindrical turning
  • Taper turning
  • Facing
  • Profiling
  • Drilling
  • Boring
  • Threading
  • Cutting / Breaking (from bar)

The machine is equipped with a support base and must be installed and used on flat surfaces with adequate resistance. It is intended for use in closed work environments (production halls, warehouses, etc.), protected from weather and free from fire or explosion hazards.

Usage Features

The lathe incorporates several features for operation and safety:

Main Parts: The machine consists of a supporting table, head and spindle, spindle speed adjustment levers, feed speed adjustment panel, tool holder carriage, tailstock, steady rest, electric control panel, pedal brake, and rotation reverse lever. A digital display is also included for monitoring dimensions.

Spindle: The spindle is self-centring with three jaws for secure workpiece clamping. A special key is used for opening/closing the jaws. A movable interlocking guard with a micro-safety switch protects the danger zone near the spindle, stopping motion when opened.

Speed Adjustment: Spindle rotation speed is adjusted via two levers on the left side of the machine. Automatic feed speed is controlled by four rotary knob switches and a fifth knob for feed direction. It is crucial to stop the electric motor before changing spindle speed.

Tool Holder Carriage: The carriage slides along the bed rails, holding and feeding the tool. It features hardened and ground guides for stability and an independent lubrication system. Handwheels allow for easy movement and fine adjustments.

Tailstock: Made of cast iron for rigidity, the tailstock has a locking system on the lathe guides and an adjustment screw for axial alignment. Movement is applied via a handle with a micrometer.

Electric Control Panel: Includes a main switch with a safety key to prevent unauthorized use, an emergency stop button (red mushroom type) to halt all dangerous functions, a white warning light for voltage presence, a black selector for the coolant pump, and a green button for gear application. The control panel is powered by 24V DC to minimize electrocution risk.

Brake System: A mechanical brake pedal slows or stops spindle rotation. Releasing the pedal stops the braking action.

Digital Display: The 400V3A-T070 model is equipped with a digital display for monitoring X, Y, and Z dimensions with 0.001 precision. It can store machining depths and display coordinates in Metric or Imperial units. The display can be rotated and tilted for optimal viewing.

Safety Devices:

  • Rotary Main Switch with Safety Key: Prevents accidental starts.
  • Emergency Stop Button: Immediately stops dangerous functions when pressed.
  • Protective Screens: Fixed and movable screens protect the operator from chips, splinters, and tool fragments. Movable guards are interlocked with safety switches to stop spindle motion if opened.
  • Grounding Conductor: The power supply connection must be grounded according to regulations to prevent electric shock.

Forbidden Uses: The manual strictly prohibits using the machine for non-ferrous materials, unauthorized maneuvers, misuse, or without proper maintenance. Specific prohibitions include operating without reading instructions, without PPE, picking up moving tools, removing chips by hand, changing tools/speeds without stopping the motor, tampering with safety devices, using as a support surface, climbing on the machine, touching with wet hands, using barefoot, exposing to elements, using water jets, or installing/using on unstable/uneven surfaces or outdoors.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the machine's efficiency and longevity.

Daily Checks:

  1. Check that all moving parts are well lubricated.
  2. Clean the surface of the spindle, turret, and machine body.
  3. Ensure no objects/tools are near moving parts.
  4. Check the operation of manually operated handwheels.
  5. Check the wear of the guide rails.

Lubrication:

  • Clean guides and spindle, applying a thin layer of oil to prevent corrosion. Remove oil before starting the machine the next day.
  • The main gears are splash lubricated, with oil level indicated by a window.
  • Other parts require manual lubrication with specified lubricants. The lead screw should be lubricated with lithium grease.
  • The lubricating oil should be completely replaced after the first week of use.
  • Only use recommended lubricants (e.g., Mobil Vectra No. 2, Shell - Tonna – T68/TX68, Chevron - Vistac – 68X, Esso - Febis - K68).
  • Do not disperse used oil into the environment; contact authorized consortiums for collection.

Periodic Checks (Every 6 months):

  • Perform a thorough inspection of operation and wear.
  • Precisely level the table.
  • The gear unit requires only oil changes.

Adjusting the Machine:

  • Motor Belts: Check and adjust belt tension (maximum 5 mm movement when pressed in the middle) to reduce wear and increase production.
  • Tailstock Alignment: Correct off-axis tailstock position by turning the adjustment screw until aligned with reference marks.
  • Spindle Alignment: Adjust bearings if the spindle rotates off-axis or for heavy machining. Loosen the lock nut, tighten the adjustment nut, test rotation, and re-tighten the lock nut.
  • Gear Slack: Adjust gear slack by moving gear II and tightening nuts III and IV to prevent breakage and wear.

Safety during Maintenance:

  • ALWAYS turn off the machine and unplug the power cord before maintenance or checks to prevent electric shock.
  • Wear protective goggles when using compressed air for cleaning.
  • Do not use the lathe if any defects are detected.

Disposal: If the machine is to be scrapped, its parts must be disposed of differently. The head, table, tailstock, slides, and carriages are made of cast iron. The gears, shafts, bearings, slideways, and spindle are made of steel. Contact a specialist center for the collection of metallic materials.
