Overview

This manual describes the FH-4WH Flush Mount Wheel Hangers, designed for storing wheels with tires. Each hanger is capable of supporting up to 120 lbs. The installation process is detailed for two primary wall types: drywall with wood studs and masonry (concrete/brick).

Function Description

The FH-4WH Flush Mount Wheel Hangers provide a secure and space-saving solution for storing vehicle wheels and tires. By mounting directly to a wall, these hangers keep wheels off the floor, freeing up valuable space in garages, workshops, or storage areas. The design ensures that the wheel face is positioned closest to the wall, optimizing the flush mount aesthetic and minimizing protrusion into the room. The system is designed for easy installation and robust support, allowing users to organize their wheels efficiently.

Usage Features

General Use and Safety: Before beginning installation, it is crucial to read the instructions thoroughly from start to finish. The product is intended for storage only, with each hanger supporting up to 120 lbs. Users are advised to check for pipes and electrical wiring before drilling into walls to prevent damage. It is also recommended to clear the installation space of vehicles or valuables to ensure a safe working environment. The manufacturer explicitly states that they are not liable for damages resulting from improper installation or misuse of the product. The hangers are not recommended for seismic zones 3 or higher.

Installation for Drywall with Wood Studs:

  1. Locate and Mark Studs: The first step involves locating wood studs behind the drywall. A stud finder is used to identify the studs, which are then marked with a pencil. The recommended spacing between hangers is 32 inches apart, measured to match the desired height. For oversized tires (32 inches or larger), a zigzag pattern is suggested instead of a straight line to accommodate additional size.
  2. Pre-drill Bolt Locations: Once the stud locations are marked, the top hanger hole is centered over these marks. A 3/16-inch drill bit is used to drill 3 inches deep. This process is repeated for all eight holes, using the hanger itself as a template. The appearance of wood dust indicates successful drilling into the stud. Safety glasses should be worn during drilling.
  3. Fasten Bolts and Test Weight: After pre-drilling, all eight lag bolts are fastened using a 1/2-inch socket and ratchet. Each hanger should be tested by pulling it up and down with one arm to ensure it is securely fastened to the stud. Finally, plastic caps are pressed over each bolt head to protect the wheels from scratching.

Installation for Masonry (Concrete/Brick):

  1. Locate and Mark Studs: Similar to drywall installation, the first step is to mark the desired locations on the masonry wall with a pencil. Hole center accuracy is critical for masonry installation. The hanger is used as a template to mark the hole positions. The recommended spacing is 32 inches apart, measured to match the desired height. For oversized tires (32 inches or larger), a zigzag pattern is suggested instead of a straight line to accommodate additional size.
  2. Drill Lag Shield Locations: On the marked centers, a 1/2-inch drill bit is used to drill 2.5 to 3 inches deep. This is repeated for all eight holes. After drilling, lag shields are inserted into the holes, "Hole" label side first, and tapped into place with a hammer. Safety glasses should be worn during drilling and hammering.
  3. Fasten Bolts and Test Weight: All eight lag bolts are fastened using a 1/2-inch socket and ratchet. Each hanger is then tested by pulling it up and down with one arm to ensure it is securely fastened to the wall. Plastic caps are pressed over each bolt head to protect the wheels from scratching.

Hanging Wheels: After installation, the center cap of the wheel is removed. The wheel is then hung on the hanger, ensuring the wheel face is closest to the wall. The manual provides illustrations showing the correct and incorrect ways to hang a wheel, emphasizing the flush mount orientation.

Troubleshooting and Special Cases:

  • Wheels without a center hub opening (e.g., some Corvettes): To prevent scratching, the hanger should be covered with the plastic bag it came in. The rim is then hung through one of its wedge openings, resting at the top.
  • Walls with steel studs: The same instructions as for wood stud walls should be followed, but the weight capacity must be reduced to 50 lbs per hanger.
  • Oversized wheels/tires that don't fit 32-inch spacing: In such cases, a zigzag pattern must be used, hanging every other hanger lower. The specific spacing will depend on the wheel size.

Maintenance Features

The FH-4WH Flush Mount Wheel Hangers are designed for durability and require minimal maintenance once installed. The primary maintenance consideration is ensuring the security of the hangers over time.

  • Regular Security Checks: Periodically, users should re-test each hanger by pulling it up and down with one arm to confirm it remains securely fastened to the wall. This helps ensure the continued safe storage of wheels and prevents potential accidents.
  • Protection of Wheels: The included plastic caps for the bolt heads are a key maintenance feature, designed to protect the wheels from scratching during storage. Users should ensure these caps remain in place and are replaced if lost or damaged to maintain wheel protection.
  • Cleaning: The hangers can be wiped clean with a damp cloth as needed to remove dust or grime, maintaining their appearance and preventing buildup.
  • Addressing Wear and Tear: While designed for robustness, any signs of wear, damage, or loosening of the hangers should be addressed promptly. If a hanger appears compromised, it should be inspected and re-secured or replaced as necessary to maintain safety and functionality.

By following these usage and maintenance guidelines, users can ensure the long-term effectiveness and safety of their FH-4WH Flush Mount Wheel Hangers.
