This document is the owner's manual for the Firehawk Wood Pellet Grill, model FHAWKPEL450B. It provides comprehensive instructions for assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the grill.
Function Description:
The Firehawk Wood Pellet Grill is an outdoor cooking appliance designed to burn food-grade wood pellets to provide heat and smoke for grilling, smoking, and other cooking methods. It features a digital thermostat control for precise temperature management and an auger system to feed pellets into a firepot. The grill is intended for outdoor use only and should not be operated in enclosed areas.
Important Technical Specifications (Derived from the manual):
- Model: FHAWKPEL450B
- Fuel Type: Food-grade wood pellets only (Do not use pellets with additives).
- Power Supply: 240 Volt AC grounded outlet.
- Temperature Control: Digital thermostat with various settings including SMOKE, SHUT DOWN CYCLE, and specific temperature ranges (e.g., 107°C, 135°C, 162°C, 190°C).
- Heating Elements: Hot Rod (Ignitor) 200W.
- Fans: Draft Inducer Fan 25W (large fan blade), Auger Drive Motor 25W (small fan blade).
- Temperature Probes: RTD Temperature Probe (main grill temperature sensor), Meat Probe (for internal food temperature measurement, one supplied).
- Safety Features: Hopper safety grates (upper and lower), automatic shutdown cycle.
Usage Features:
- Initial Firing Instructions: A detailed 10-step process is provided for the first use and whenever the grill runs out of pellets. This includes removing internal components, checking the auger and hopper, plugging in, turning on to SMOKE, verifying auger, fan, and hotrod operation, then performing a SHUT DOWN CYCLE, filling with pellets, and running at HIGH for 45 minutes to burn off foreign matter before cooking.
- Subsequent Start-Up: Instructions are given for restarting the grill, especially if it fails to light or the fire goes out, emphasizing the importance of cleaning the firepot and following specific steps to prevent over-firing.
- Temperature Control: The grill uses a digital thermostat with a temperature dial. Users can select various cooking temperatures or the "SMOKE" setting for low-temperature smoking.
- Meat Probe: The grill includes a meat probe that plugs into the control panel (PROBE1 or PROBE2) to monitor internal food temperature. The control panel displays P1 for PROBE1 and P2 for PROBE2.
- Pellet Feed: A "FEED" button allows for manual feeding of extra pellets into the firepot.
- Pellet Cleanout Door: Located at the back of the hopper, this door allows for easy removal of unused pellets, facilitating replacement with fresh pellets or different smoking flavors.
- Operating Tips:
- External factors (temperature, humidity, wind, pellet quality) affect grill temperature and cooking times.
- Sheltering the grill from wind improves temperature output and heat retention.
- Frequent lid opening increases cooking time.
- Preheating for 10 minutes is recommended before adding food.
- Never move the grill while in use.
- Never add water to the pellet hopper or firepot.
- Critical Warning: Never add pellets directly to the firepot; this is dangerous. If pellets run out, follow initial firing instructions.
- Grease Drain Pan can be wrapped with heavy-duty aluminum foil for easier cleaning.
- In case of a grease fire, turn the Temperature Dial to SHUT DOWN CYCLE and keep the lid open until the fire is out. Do not use water.
- Shutdown Cycle: After cooking, turning the Temperature Dial to "SHUT DOWN CYCLE" activates a 10-minute fan operation to burn redundant pellets in the firepot, after which the fan stops and the controller powers off. This prevents fires in the hopper chamber.
Maintenance Features:
- General Cleaning: The grill must be OFF, unplugged, and completely cold before any maintenance or cleaning.
- Grease Management: Regular cleaning of the Flue Lining, Grease Drain Tube, V-shaped Grease Drain, and Grease Drain Pan is crucial to prevent grease fires. Grease is easier to remove when the grill is warm (not hot), using heat-resistant gloves. A stiff, nonmetallic tool can be used to scrape grease into the Grease Bucket.
- Flue Pipe (Smoke Stack) Cleaning: Remove the Chimney Cap Assembly and clean it with warm soapy water. Scrape creosote and grease from inside the flue pipe using a stiff, nonmetallic tool. Do not spray water or liquid cleaners inside the grill.
- Outside Surfaces: Clean with warm soapy water. Avoid oven cleaner, abrasive cleansers, or pads. A grill cover is recommended. High-quality car wax can protect the finish.
- Internal Components:
- Porcelain-coated Grill Grates should be cleaned with a long-handled brush designed for such surfaces after each use.
- The inner RTD temperature probe should be cleaned after each use.
- Ash Removal: Periodically clean ash from the interior of the grill, especially the firepot, using a shop vac. Ensure the grill fire is out, the unit is off, unplugged, and cold before cleaning ash.
Troubleshooting:
The manual includes a troubleshooting section covering common issues such as the grill not working (power, fuse, hot rod, wires/connections, auger drive motor), fire going out (too much ash), and starting issues. It also lists error codes:
- LEr (Low Temperature Alarm): Grill temperature below 49°C for more than 20 minutes.
- HEr (High Temperature Alarm): Grill temperature reached 288°C.
- Er 1: Temperature probe not properly connected to the controller board.
- Er 2: Temperature dial security alarm. Requires turning the dial to SHUT DOWN CYCLE, turning off/on the grill, then setting desired temperature.
