Overview

This document describes the Optical Fiber Tester, a device designed for comprehensive testing and analysis of optical fiber networks.

Function Description

The Optical Fiber Tester is a multi-functional device capable of performing various tests on optical fiber, including Optical Power Meter (OPM), Visual Fault Locator (VFL), Light Source (LS), and RJ45 Sequence/Length/Tracker tests. It is designed to assist in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic communication systems.

Optical Power Meter (OPM) The OPM function measures the optical power of a fiber optic signal. It can display absolute power in dBm or relative power in dB. Key features include:

  • Wavelength Selection: Supports various wavelengths (850/1300/1310/1490/1550/1625nm) to match different fiber types and applications.
  • Absolute Power Measurement: Displays the current optical power in dBm.
  • Relative Power Measurement: Allows setting a reference power to measure loss or gain in dB.
  • Frequency Detection: Can detect modulated signals at 270Hz, 330Hz, 1KHz, and 2KHz.
  • Auto-off Function: Automatically powers off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery.
  • Backlight Adjustment: Allows adjusting the screen backlight for better visibility.

Visual Fault Locator (VFL) The VFL function uses a visible red laser to locate breaks, bends, and poor connections in optical fibers. It helps identify faults visually, making it easier to pinpoint problem areas.

  • Wavelength: Typically operates at 650nm.
  • Output Power: Available in different output powers (e.g., 10mW, 20mW, 30mW) to suit various fiber lengths and fault detection requirements.
  • Operating Modes: Supports continuous wave (CW) and modulated (2Hz) modes.
  • Safety Warning: Displays a "DANGER" warning when the VFL is active, reminding users not to look directly into the laser output.

Light Source (LS) The LS function provides a stable optical signal at various wavelengths for testing fiber optic cables. It is often used in conjunction with an OPM to measure insertion loss.

  • Wavelength Selection: Supports multiple wavelengths (e.g., 1310/1550nm, 850/1300nm) to match different fiber types.
  • Output Power: Provides stable output power.
  • Operating Modes: Supports continuous wave (CW) and modulated (270Hz, 330Hz, 1KHz, 2KHz) modes.
  • Fiber Type Compatibility: Can be used with both single-mode and multi-mode fibers depending on the selected wavelength.

RJ45 Sequence/Length/Tracker This function is designed for testing RJ45 network cables.

  • RJ45 Sequence Test: Checks the wiring sequence of RJ45 cables to ensure correct pin assignments. It can identify open circuits, short circuits, and cross-overs.
  • RJ45 Length Test: Measures the length of RJ45 cables.
  • RJ45 Tracker: Helps locate RJ45 cables in a bundle or wall by emitting an audible tone.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Display: LCD screen for displaying test results and menu navigation.
  • Power Supply: Rechargeable battery, typically charged via a standard AC adapter.
  • Interface: USB port for data transfer and possibly firmware updates.
  • Connectors: Universal optical connectors (e.g., FC/SC/ST interchangeable) for OPM, VFL, and LS functions. RJ45 port for network cable testing.
  • Operating Environment: Specified temperature and humidity ranges for optimal performance.
  • Storage Environment: Specified temperature and humidity ranges for safe storage.

Usage Features

User Interface:

  • Main Interface: Provides quick access to OPM, VFL, LS, and RJ45 functions.
  • Menu Navigation: Uses directional keys (up, down, left, right) and an "OK" key for menu selection and parameter adjustment.
  • Function Keys: Dedicated keys (F1-F4) for specific actions within each function, such as switching modes, saving data, or accessing settings.
  • Back Key: Returns to the previous menu or exits the current function.
  • On/Off Key: Powers the device on or off. A long press typically powers off, while a short press may turn on/off the backlight.

Data Management:

  • Event Log: Records important events such as power on/off, function changes, and system warnings.
  • File Save: Allows users to save test results for later review or analysis. Saved files can be managed (viewed, renamed, deleted) through the device's file operation menu.
  • Auto-Save Function: Can be configured to automatically save test results after each measurement or at specified intervals.
  • Data Export: Test results can be exported via USB to a computer for further analysis or reporting.
