Overview

This document is a service manual for Fisher & Paykel front-loading washing machines, specifically models AWF60MD, WH60F60W1, and WH70F60W1. It provides detailed specifications, functional test programs, heater testing procedures, diagnostic information, service mode instructions, fault codes, and flowcharts for troubleshooting common issues.

Function Description

The document outlines the operation of the washing machine through various functional tests and diagnostic procedures. It covers the basic washing cycles, motor operations (wash and spin), water filling (prewash, main wash, softener, hot water), heating element activation, and drain pump function. The service mode allows technicians to access fault codes and perform specific tests to diagnose problems.

Usage Features

The manual details two functional test programs (Program 1 and Program 2) for diagnostic purposes. Functional Test Program 1 (for models produced before August 2006):

  1. Entry: Ensure machine is on at the power point, off on display, and On/Off button is in the Off position. Select "Cotton 90°C" with the program selector knob. Press and hold Start/Pause, then press On/Off once, keeping Start/Pause held for an additional four seconds. "-- --" will be displayed to confirm entry.
  2. Sequence: Press Start/Pause to advance through steps. Press On/Off to exit/cancel.
    • LED check (all LEDs blink)
    • Prewash (Cold) fill
    • Main wash (Cold) fill
    • Softener (Cold) fill
    • Main wash (Hot) fill
    • Heater Element activation (fills with hot/cold water if level is low)
    • Motor (CW) rotation at 52 RPM
    • Motor (CCW) rotation at 52 RPM
    • Drain Pump activation
    • Spinning to 1000 RPM (recommended to terminate here; further steps are for production testing)

Functional Test Program 2 (for software version 6038 and later):

  1. Entry: Similar to Program 1, but "----" will be displayed after the door is locked. The door lock activates at this stage. If terminated early, wait for the door interlock to cool.
  2. Sequence: Press Start/Pause to advance. Press On/Off to exit/cancel.
    • Fault code display (if any)
    • Software version display
    • LED check (all LEDs blink)
    • Motor (CW) rotation at 52 rpm (drain pump activates if water level is above flood level)
    • Motor (CCW) rotation at 52 rpm
    • Motor (CW) spin up to 900 rpm
    • Prewash (Cold) fill while decelerating from 900 rpm
    • Main Wash (Cold) fill
    • Softener (Cold) fill
    • Main Wash (Hot) fill
    • Heater Element activation (fills with hot/cold water if level is low)
    • Spray pump test (if fitted), heater turns on, main wash motor rotates at 52 rpm
    • Drain pump activation

Service Mode: To enter Service Mode:

  1. Ensure power is on.
  2. Press On/Off (wait 5 seconds for display).
  3. Press and hold "Prewash & Extra Rinse" for 2 seconds.
  4. If a fault code is present, it will be displayed.

Maintenance Features

Heater Testing:

  • Remove tabletop.
  • Start test program (reaches Step 6).
  • Place a clamp-on amp meter around Grey or Red wire to the element.
  • Current draw should be approximately 8.5 amps.

Diagnostics (LED Flashing):

  • Prewash LED flashing: Control module failure (requires replacement).
  • Main Wash LED flashing: Component issue (refer to flowchart "No Water").
  • Rinse LED flashing: "No Water" issue (refer to flowchart).
  • Conditioner LED flashing: "Unable to select a program" issue (refer to flowchart).

Fault Codes: Fault codes are stored in memory when a failure is detected and can be viewed in Service Mode. They are erased at the start of the next cycle, so it's crucial to check them before running another test.

  • H1 (NTC Open or Short Circuit): NTC sensor failure, program completes without heating.
  • H2 (Heater Open Circuit): Heater open circuit, program completes without heating.
  • H3 (Heater Always On): Control module replacement required.
  • H4 (Valve Triac Short Circuit): Control module replacement required.
  • H5 (Pump Open Circuit / Blocked): Water level unchanged for 4 min, machine pauses, repeats 8 times before fault.
  • H6 (Wash Motor Triac Short Circuit): Motor spins to high speed, checks 3 times for 3 seconds with 30-second pause, then opens relay, drains water, reverts to start.
  • H7 (Pressure Sensor Failure): Refer to "No Water" flowchart.
  • H11 (Motor / Tacho Open Circuit): After filling, if motor doesn't run or tacho signal isn't received, machine pauses for 120 seconds, repeats 8 times. If problem persists, motor won't energize, pump motor turns on, Prewash LED flashes.

Troubleshooting Flowcharts: The manual includes flowcharts for specific issues:

  • Washing Machine Does Not Work: Guides through checking LEDs, front panel, door lock, cable continuity, and main PCB.
  • Washing Machine Doesn't Work (After Filling Step Is Performed): Focuses on motor coil resistance, tacho magnet, KN9 socket pins, and draining.
  • Washing Machine Takes Water from Wrong Compartment of Detergent Drawer: Checks valve connections.
  • No Heat: Checks NTC sensor, heater resistance, and connections.
  • Not Draining: Checks pump motor, pump filter, drain hose level, and pump terminal continuity.
  • Unable to select a program: Checks program selector resistance and connections.
  • Spinning When Washing: Addresses tacho failure, motor coil resistance, and tacho magnet.
  • LED Blinking: Directs to specific diagnostic sections based on which LED is blinking.

The manual emphasizes removing garments before functional tests and waiting for the door interlock to cool if a test is terminated early. It also provides warnings about the consequences of specific failures, such as the motor not being energized or the machine turning to program selection mode after repeated attempts to correct a problem.
