Detergent and fabric softener
Detergent type
Your washer requires low sudsing detergent to prevent oversudsing problems. Low sudsing detergent comes in
powder, liquid or pod form and is labelled ‘Front Loading’, ‘Low Suds’, ‘High Efficiency’ or ‘HE’.
Using top loading detergent in your front loader washer may lead to excessive suds formation, which will lengthen
the cycle time as the machine waits for the suds to dissolve.
Where do I put my detergent?
WH8560F, WH8060F, WH8560P, WH8060P and WH7560P models only
Liquid detergent
Is added to the main wash compartment on the left side of the dispenser drawer marked with a
(A). As the machine fills, water is flushed into this compartment and is mixed with the detergent, the detergent
solution is then delivered into the drum. There may be a small volume of water left in the liquid detergent
dispenser at the end of the cycle. This is normal.
Powdered detergent
If you wish to use powdered detergent, the liquid detergent compartment MUST be removed from the dispenser
drawer. To do this firmly grasp and twist the left hand side of the internal compartment and pull upwards (B). To
replace the liquid detergent compartment slide it back into the drawer marked
(C). Press down in the middle until it clicks (D).

Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the use and maintenance of Fisher & Paykel front-loading washing machines, specifically addressing detergent and fabric softener usage, as well as common issues like "scrud."

Function Description:

The Fisher & Paykel front-loading washing machine is designed to efficiently clean laundry using various types of detergents and fabric softeners. It features a dispenser drawer with dedicated compartments for different wash agents and options for specialized wash cycles. The machine is engineered to handle a range of soil levels and fabric types, providing a thorough and effective wash.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Detergent Compatibility: The washer requires low-sudsing detergents, including powder, liquid, or pod forms, explicitly labeled "Front Loading," "Low Suds," "High Efficiency," or "HE." Using top-loading detergents is discouraged as it can lead to excessive suds and extended cycle times.
  • Model Specifics: Instructions are provided for WH8560F, WH8060F, WH8560P, WH8060P, WH7560P, WH8560J, and WH7560J models, indicating variations in dispenser drawer markings and features.
  • Dispenser Compartments:
    • Main Wash (Liquid Detergent): Marked with a "II" (A) for WH8560F, WH8060F, WH8560P, WH8060P, and WH7560P models. For WH8560J and WH7560J models, it's marked with a "2." Water flushes into this compartment to mix with liquid detergent, delivering the solution to the drum. A small volume of water may remain after the cycle, which is normal.
    • Main Wash (Powdered Detergent): For powdered detergent, the liquid detergent compartment (A or 2) must be removed. This is done by grasping and twisting the left side of the internal compartment and pulling upwards (B). To replace, slide it back into the drawer marked (C) and press down in the middle until it clicks (D).
    • Pre Wash Detergent: Located on the right side of the drawer, marked with a "①" or "1." This compartment is flushed at the start of the cycle when the 'Pre Wash' option is selected. Only liquid or powdered detergent should be placed here.
    • Fabric Softener: Located in the middle compartment of the dispenser, marked with a flower icon or a specific symbol. The washer automatically flushes fabric softener during the rinse cycle.
  • Temperature Recommendations: Regular wash cycles at 40°C or above (e.g., every 5th wash) are recommended to prevent "scrud" build-up, as cold water washing increases its likelihood.

Usage Features:

  • Detergent Placement:
    • Liquid Detergent: Poured into the main wash compartment (II or 2).
    • Powdered Detergent: Requires removal of the liquid detergent insert from the main wash compartment before adding powder.
    • Detergent Pods: Must be placed at the back of the drum prior to loading clothes to ensure quick activation. Pods should not be placed in the dispenser drawer or on top of clothes.
  • Pre Wash Option: If selected, detergent must be placed in the dedicated pre-wash compartment (① or 1). For WH8560J and WH7560J models, if using 'Delay Start', powdered detergent is recommended for the main wash.
  • Fabric Softener Usage: Added to the middle compartment. It should be used sparingly, with a maximum of 25ml (1/2 cap). Thicker varieties may require dilution.
  • Detergent Dosage: The correct dosage varies based on soil level, load size, and water quality. Users should start with the detergent manufacturer's recommendations and adjust based on results. Overdosing leads to excessive suds, while under-dosing results in poor performance and potential odor from scum build-up.
  • Drawer Closure: The detergent drawer must be completely closed before starting any cycle.
  • Adding Detergent: Detergent should be added before starting the cycle. The dispenser should not be opened while the cycle is running.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning:
    • Detergent Dispenser: Should be cleaned regularly, especially the fabric softener dispenser, to prevent build-up.
    • Machine Cleaning: The 'Drum Clean' cycle should be used regularly to maintain machine hygiene and prevent odors.
  • Addressing Odors: If the washer smells, it often indicates insufficient detergent for the soil level. Running a 'Drum Clean' cycle and using a higher dose or better quality detergent (alternating with mainstream detergents if using 'Eco' varieties) is recommended.
  • Foam Leaking: If foam leaks, verify that a low-sudsing or front-loader specific detergent is being used and check the quantity against manufacturer recommendations. Reducing the amount of detergent may be necessary.
  • Scrud Prevention: "Scrud" is a waxy build-up from fabric softener interacting with detergent, not a machine fault. To prevent it:
    • Avoid overfilling the fabric softener compartment beyond the MAX mark, as this can cause premature dispensing.
    • Perform wash cycles at 40°C or above regularly (e.g., every 5th wash) to reduce the chance of scrud, as cold water washing increases its likelihood.
    • If washing a particularly dirty load, run a 'Rinse' cycle after the main wash to clean out remnants and prevent scrud.
