Overview

The FB300 Electrophoresis Power Supply is a versatile instrument designed to provide constant voltage or constant current output for various electrophoresis applications. This power supply allows for the simultaneous connection and operation of one to three sets of electrophoresis cells in parallel, delivering up to 75W of total output power. Its intelligent design incorporates automatic control mode crossover, which limits the non-constant parameter (voltage in constant current mode, or current in constant voltage mode) to either the power supply's maximum or a user-defined lower limit. This feature ensures that if the non-constant limit is reached, the power supply automatically switches control modes, thereby protecting electrophoresis cells from potential damage due to overpower conditions.

The FB300 offers timed operation capabilities in both voltage and current modes, allowing users to set a specific duration for their runs. A key feature is the automatic power-fail restart function, which, if enabled, allows a timed run to resume automatically after a power loss, ensuring the total programmed time is met. This restart capability includes a 10-second delay after AC power is restored, during which the output remains de-energized, providing a safe window for users to stop the run if needed. The power supply's settings, including the setpoint value, limit parameter, time duration, and power-fail restart setting, are preserved for each mode (constant voltage or constant current) after a run is started, facilitating convenient setup for repetitive experiments.

Operating the FB300 is straightforward. To enable the control logic, users press the gray key on the front center of the unit. The 3-digit display illuminates, showing the setpoint value of the last saved run setup. The constant key (labeled K) toggles between constant voltage and constant current control modes, displaying the last saved setpoint for the selected mode. Arrow keys are used to adjust setpoint values. Once a control mode is selected and parameters are set, pressing the Run key energizes the power supply output, which then ramps up to the appropriate setpoint while respecting any set limit parameters. During a run, the display automatically cycles through voltage, current, and time readings, showing actual measured values and allowing real-time modification of the controlled setpoint using the arrow keys. The time parameter displays either elapsed time for untimed runs or time remaining for timed runs. To stop a run, either the Run key or the gray ON/OFF key can be pressed, which de-energizes the output and displays "OFF." Pressing Run again resumes a timed run from its previous point.

The FB300 is equipped with a comprehensive troubleshooting system that detects and reports various error conditions. When an error occurs, the unit stops any ongoing run and displays an "EXX" code, where "XX" corresponds to a specific error. Users can clear the error and return to setup mode by pressing the gray ON/OFF key, or resume the run (after correcting the error's cause) by pressing the Run key. Error codes cover issues such as minimum or maximum load current, and different scenarios of AC power loss with or without power-fail restart enabled. Internal error conditions are also reported, prompting users to contact technical support.

Maintenance of the FB300 is minimal. For cleaning, the unit should always be unplugged from the AC power source. The sealed front panel can be wiped with a mild detergent solution, but harsh cleaners should be avoided to prevent damage to the tactile membrane keys. The power supply requires no periodic servicing and is designed for long-term, trouble-free operation. Should a fuse replacement be necessary, users must first disconnect the AC line cord. The fuse holder assembly can be removed with a small flat blade screwdriver. Both fuses should always be replaced with appropriate 1.5A, 250V, 5X20mm, type T fuses (Fisher catalog number FBFUSE1). The FB300 is designed for indoor use only and is provided with a 3-conductor, grounded AC line cord, which is essential for safe operation. It is crucial to use only the provided AC line cord and to connect the power supply to a 3-prong grounded AC outlet. The output is intended for electrically isolated electrophoresis apparatus with a minimum isolation of 600V, and connecting any output terminal to earth ground is strictly prohibited to maintain safety and prevent equipment damage. After stopping a run, a minimum wait of 60 seconds is recommended before touching the power supply leads, as high voltage output can take time to decay.
