Overview

The Royal Grinder is a precision-engineered manual coffee grinder designed for a wide range of brewing methods, from extra fine espresso to coarse French press. It consists of three main components: a detachable aluminum handle (A), a precision-milled aluminum body (B), and a detachable stainless steel catch cup (C).

Function Description:

The primary function of the Royal Grinder is to consistently grind coffee beans to a desired coarseness. It achieves this through a conical burr set, which is adjusted via an intuitive lift, turn, and lock mechanism. The grinder is designed for manual operation, with an ergonomic pommel and a crank handle that provides rotational force.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Dose: 30 grams of coffee beans.
  • Minimum Grind Adjustment: 0.02mm per micro-setting.
  • Adjustment System: Features 72 individual adjustments across three full rotations of the adjustment crown, or 24 micro-settings per rotation. Each click represents a 0.02mm change in grind size.
  • Components:
    • Detachable Handle (A): Made of aluminum, it includes a thumb rest and handle screw for secure attachment.
    • Aluminum Body (B): Precision-milled, it houses the internal grinding mechanism, including the anti-popcorning cap, adjustment crown, thrust bearing, guide bearings, full wrap silicone grip, stainless steel shaft, and conical burr set.
    • Detachable Catch Cup (C): Features a stainless steel liner for durability and easy cleaning, designed to collect ground coffee.
  • Grind Settings: The grinder is shipped set to ZERO, which represents the finest suggested grind. The adjustment crown locks up to the right of zero (when rotated counter-clockwise).
  • Materials: Aluminum for the handle and body, stainless steel for the shaft and catch cup liner, and silicone for the grip.

Usage Features:

  • Grind Adjustment:
    1. Lift: Pull the adjustment crown upwards until a "click" is felt, indicating it's fully disengaged from the base.
    2. Turn: Rotate the crown to adjust the grind size.
      • Clockwise (increasing numbers): Increases grind size (coarser).
      • Counter-Clockwise (decreasing numbers): Decreases grind size (finer).
    3. Lock: Push the crown down until it clicks into the base, securing the chosen grind setting.
  • Recommended Grind Settings (Starting Points):
    • Flair 58 & Commercial Espresso: Extra fine (closest to ZERO).
    • Non-58 Flair Models: Fine.
    • Aeropress: Medium fine.
    • Pour Over: Medium coarse.
    • French Press: Coarse.
    • Note: Grind settings will vary based on brew method, desired dose, bean type, and roast. Users are encouraged to "dial-in" to their preferences.
  • Holding the Grinder: For optimal stability and to counterbalance the rotational force of the crank handle, hold the grinder high, covering the silicone grip, and use the thumb rest.
  • Removing the Catch Cup: To avoid spilling grounds, grip the catch cup with your thumb at the designated "BREAK POINT" and tilt the grinder body back towards your thumb to detach it.
  • Break-in Period: A break-in period of 30 grinds is recommended for the burrs to season. It is advised not to remove the burrs until after this period.
  • Safety Note: Never force the adjustment crown below the "Lock Up" position, as this can damage the mechanism. The lock-up position may slightly decrease over time as the grinder seasons.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The Royal Grinder is not waterproof. Never wash the grinder under a faucet or sink. Cleaning should be done by disassembling the components and wiping them clean, or using a brush.
  • Burr Maintenance: Information on how to change the burrs is available through online tutorials, which can be accessed via QR codes provided in the manual or the Flair Espresso website.
  • Durability: The use of aluminum for the body and handle, and stainless steel for the catch cup liner and shaft, ensures durability and longevity.
