Overview

The FlooGoo™ FMA120 is a dual-mode Bluetooth 5.4 USB audio source dongle designed to upgrade various source devices such as phones, laptops, TVs, and other audio equipment with advanced Bluetooth audio capabilities. It functions as a standard USB audio device, providing both speaker and microphone channels.

Function Description:

The FMA120 dongle facilitates Bluetooth audio connections, transmitting data to and from remote devices. It supports both classic Bluetooth headsets and the latest Bluetooth low-energy (LE) audio headsets. When the operating system selects an appropriate channel for music or voice, the dongle establishes a Bluetooth audio connection. For applications like Skype that use both microphone and speaker channels, classic Bluetooth headsets utilize the Hands-Free Profile (HFP), while LE audio headsets use the Telephony and Media Audio Profile (TMAP), establishing a two-way audio call on the headset.

A key feature of the FMA120 is its support for the aptX Adaptive codec and Auracast™ broadcast audio functionality. It also supports LE audio unicast for both music and voice. The dongle is compatible with Bluetooth classic headsets, speakers, and earbuds.

Usage Features:

The FMA120 offers three primary modes: High Quality, Gaming, and Broadcast.

  • First-time Use: Upon initial use, the dongle automatically searches for nearby Bluetooth headsets. Users should ensure their headsets are in pairing mode and in close proximity for connection, as the dongle prioritizes pairing with the nearest device.
  • LED Status Indicators:
    • Flash slowly: Idle
    • Flash fast: Searching for pairing
    • Flash 2 times in 2 seconds: Connected, audio idle
    • Flash 3 times in 2 seconds: Audio or broadcast streaming
  • Advanced Functionalities (Host App): To access advanced features, a corresponding host app is available.
    • Windows: Downloadable from the Microsoft Store (FlooCast on Microsoft Store).
    • Mac and Linux: Available as an open-source GitHub repository (FlooCast on GitHub).
  • Codec Selection: The dongle automatically selects the best codec when connecting to a compatible headset. The chosen codec can be confirmed in the "Codec in Use" panel of the desktop app.
    • Music Unicast:
      • High-quality: Classic BT (aptX adaptive), LE Audio (LC3)
      • Gaming: Classic BT (aptX adaptive), LE Audio (aptX lite)
    • Bi-directional Voice:
      • High-quality: Classic BT (mSBC), LE Audio (LC3)
      • Gaming: Classic BT (mSBC), LE Audio (aptX lite)
    • In broadcast mode, LC3 is used as per the LE audio standard.
  • Manual Pairing: A new pairing can be initiated by clicking the '+' button in the "Most Recently Used Devices" section of the app. The dongle will then search for the closest Bluetooth headset in pairing mode and establish a connection. Previously used devices and the currently paired device will be displayed in a list.
  • Dual-Mode Preference: For dual-mode headsets, the app allows users to set a preference for either classic Bluetooth or LE audio for streaming.
  • Broadcast Mode Settings (LE Audio):
    • Public broadcast: When enabled, the Public Audio Broadcast (PBP) feature is active, and the dongle acts as a Public Broadcast Source (PBS). When disabled, it operates as a Broadcast Media Sender (BMS).
    • Broadcast high-quality music: When enabled, the dongle uses a 48 kHz sample rate for music. When disabled, it uses a 16 kHz sample rate for voice.
    • Encrypt broadcast: If enabled, an encryption code restricts access to broadcast content, similar to a Wi-Fi access code. Only receivers with the code can access it.
    • Broadcast name: A human-readable string for receivers to distinguish between multiple broadcasters.
    • Broadcast code: The encryption code for the broadcast. Codes less than 16 bytes are padded with zeros.
  • Compatibility with other Bluetooth adapters: The FMA120 runs all its functions, including the Bluetooth stack, within its embedded processors, and does not require additional drivers on the host, preventing conflicts with other Bluetooth adapters.
  • Raspberry Pi, Smart TV, Projector Compatibility: Functions as a standard USB audio device. Automatically detected by the latest Raspbian. For Android-based smart TVs or projectors, users should activate developer mode and ensure "Disable USB audio routing" is not enabled.

Maintenance Features:

  • Firmware Upgrades: Firmware can be easily upgraded via USB. The device firmware update function is exclusively available in the Windows app. The latest firmware can be found through the Support Link accessible from the desktop app.
  • Settings Persistence: Altered settings are stored within the dongle, allowing it to operate with new settings even when powered off and on again, without needing the app to run continuously. The app is only necessary for configuring new settings.
  • Applying Settings: Switching between high-quality and gaming modes usually takes effect immediately. However, for other setting changes, such as broadcast parameters, a reset is recommended.
  • Troubleshooting LED: If the LED does not flash or light up, check if the golden connectors on the FMA120's USB connector are properly contacting the receptors of the USB port, as the dongle only works when inserted correctly.
