Chapter I- General Engine Repair
Th e fuel pump capacity on a ll engi n es shou ld be 1 pint
in 45 seconds or less.
( 1 3) I NS PECT AND C LEA N FU EL PUMP BOWL.
R emove and clean the fuel pump bowl. In sta ll a new
filter on the 223, 239, or 256 c ub ic in ch engine. Cl ea n
th e filter on the 279 or 3 17 cubic inc h engine. In sta ll
th e sedime nt bow l and a new gasket.
( 14 ) CLEAN CARBURETOR . Cl ean the carb u re tor
fuel bowl. Set the floa t or fu el l eve l, and ch eck the ac-
celerator pump operation.
(IS) CLEAN AIR CLEANER. Clean th e air cl ea n er ,
oil the el eme nt (dry-type), a nd inst all. If the air
cleaner is th e oil bath-type, fill to the indicated l eve l
with engine oil of the speci fi ed viscosity.
(16) TEST ENGINE VACUU M. Ch eck the engine
m ani fo ld vac uum at id le speed .
If the vac uu m is lower than norm al, check for leak-
age at the vacu um lin es and int a ke manifo l d. Check the
ca rbu retor idle adjustment .
If the vacuum is sti ll below norm al or is er r atic, it is
an indication of bad rings , stic ky valves, wea k va l ve
spring, or leaking gaskets. If this condit i on exists, it
shou ld be reported to the customer.
( 17) AD J US T CARBURET OR IDLE. C onnect a
vacu um ga uge, and set the idle sp ee d to specificat ions
with a tachometer installed on the eng in e. S et th e idle
fuel adjustme nt to the point of hi gh est a nd stea diest
mani fo ld vac uum a nd / or at the smoo the st e ngine i dle .

eset the idle speed if required.
( 18 ) CHECK DEPOPPER OP E RATION. Check
the operat ion of the carburetor dep o pp er valve on the
256, 279, a nd 317 cubic inch engines.
( 1 9) CH ECK GOVERNOR OPERATIO N - 256,
279, AND 317 CUBIC I NC II ENGINES. Foll ow the
procedure under "8. i\ ' linor Tun e- Up."
(20) RO AD TEST. R oad t es t th e ve hicle as a final
check on the work performed. Al so, not ice the perform-
ance of the tra n smission, axle , brakes , a nd any optional
accessories. R ecomme nd any addit i onal serv ice required
wh en the vehicle is delivered to the owner.
3. ENGINE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
En gine remova l a nd insta ll atio n pro ce dur es are sepa-

separate procedure is gi ve n for Con vent iona l a nd C ab
F orward Truck s equipped with F ordomatic.
Th e engine mounts u sed to i nstall t he engin es on a
work st and are illu stra t ed in figs. 1, 2, and 3.

(1.) REMOVAL. Dr ain the cooling system . Dr ain
th e cra nk case. R em ove the hood. R em ove th e f an as-
semb ly and the fan be lt. D isconnect the heater hoses at
th e e ngine . R e move the radiator and shroud asse mbl y.

R emove the air cleaner, th en tape th e carburetor air
ho rn closed.
D iscon n ect the winds hi eld wiper vacuum ho se at the
ma nifold.
Di sconnect the hand throttle contro l, ch oke ca ble,
accelerator rod , and the acce l erato r r etrac tin g s pring at
the carbureto r.
