Engines
Fusion is great to drive, thanks in part to its two available
engines. Both engines have:
Aluminum construction
Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) valvetrain
Four valves per cylinder
intake Variable Cam Timing (i-VCT)
Electronic Throttle Control (ETC)
Hydraulic engine mounts that help isolate engine vibration
and movements from the chassis
Duratec 23 — 2.3L I-4 Engine
160 horsepower and 156 lb.-ft. of torque
5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission
Balance shaft helps lessen engine vibration — to perform
smoothly, much like a V-6 does
Variable cam timing provides performance and
fuel economy
Single exhaust
Duratec 30 — 3.0L V-6 Engine
221 horsepower and
205 lb.-ft. of torque
6-speed automatic
transmission
Dual exhaust
i-VCT
Both Fusion engines
feature i-VCT (intake
Variable Cam Timing).
This technology:
Allows the camshafts to
operate the intake valves
at different times in the
combustion cycle, based
on speed and load
Adjusts timing for maximum performance and efficiency
Results in outstanding efficiency under low load conditions
like idling or highway cruising
Results in remarkable power when accelerating

A CLOSER LOOK: Balance Shaft
Some engines have a tendency to rock back and forth as
the cylinders go up and down. At times, passengers can
feel this rocking motion inside the vehicle. To prevent this,
engineers often add a heavy tube that runs through the
engine and parallel to the crankshaft. Called a balance
shaft, this device has weights that offset the rocking motion.
In the Fusion’s I-4 engine, the balance shaft helps lessen
engine vibration and lets the engine run smoothly at idle
and under acceleration.
A CLOSER LOOK: Neutral Towing
Some Fusion owners may wish to flat-tow (four-wheel-down
towing) their vehicle behind a motorhome or other vehicle.
Fusion equipped with the Duratec 23 - 2.3L I-4 engine
and 5-speed manual transmission may be flat-towed safely
– The maximum speed limit while towing is 70 mph
– The parking brake must be fully released
– The transmission must be in Neutral
Fusion models equipped with an automatic transmission must
not be flat-towed, as it may damage the transmission and
will not be covered under the base vehicle warranty.
