Overview

This is an Operator's Manual for the Ford Series 770 Loader, designed for use with Ford 1300, 1500, and 1700 series tractors. The manual provides comprehensive information on the operation, maintenance, assembly, and parts identification for the loader, emphasizing safe and efficient use to ensure long service life.

Function Description

The Ford Series 770 Loader is a front-end loader attachment designed for agricultural and light construction tasks. Its primary function is to lift, carry, and dump various materials using a bucket or other attachments. The loader is hydraulically operated, allowing for precise control over lifting, lowering, and tilting actions. It is intended for tasks such as filling buckets, lifting and carrying loads, dumping materials, operating with float, loading from banks, peeling and scraping, loading low trucks or spreaders, and backfilling. The manual stresses that the loader is not recommended for handling large, heavy objects like round or rectangular bales, logs, or oil drums due to safety concerns.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides specific hydraulic system pressure and loader performance data based on the tractor model:

  • Ford 1300:
    • Loader Hydraulic System Pressure: 1200 psi
    • Breakout at Valve Crack Relief Setting: 1000 lbs
    • Lift Capacity at Valve Crack Relief Setting: 600 lbs
  • Ford 1500 and 1700:
    • Loader Hydraulic System Pressure: 1500 psi
    • Breakout at Valve Crack Relief Setting: 1400 lbs
    • Lift Capacity at Valve Crack Relief Setting: 800 lbs

These specifications highlight the loader's capabilities and the importance of maintaining correct hydraulic pressure for optimal performance. The relief valve setting is factory pre-set, and tampering with it is strictly prohibited as it can lead to overloading and serious injury.

Usage Features

The manual outlines several key operating techniques and safety precautions:

  • Engine Speed: Operate the loader with the tractor engine running at 1700-2200 rpm for efficiency. Below 30°F, run the engine below 1200 rpm until the oil temperature exceeds 30°F.
  • Stability:
    • Add recommended wheel ballast or rear weight to the tractor for stability. The effective counterbalance weight of mounted rear equipment is calculated by multiplying its actual weight by 1.50.
    • Move wheels to the widest recommended settings.
    • Use a tractor with a wide front axle rather than tricycle front wheels.
    • Carry loader arms at a low position during transport and when operating on inclines to maintain a low center of gravity.
  • Bucket Operation:
    • Filling: Approach and enter the pile with a level bucket. Ease both levers back to lift and roll back the bucket. Do not attempt multiple passes to fill the bucket completely, as this reduces productivity.
    • Lifting: Keep the bucket positioned to avoid spillage. Do not lift loads exceeding the loader's capacity.
    • Dumping: Lift the bucket high enough to clear the vehicle side, move the tractor close, then dump.
    • Lowering: Back away from the vehicle while lowering and leveling the bucket.
    • Float Position: Use the float position for hard surface operation, snow removal, or when working with a blade to prevent surface gouging and reduce wear.
  • Loading Techniques:
    • From a Bank: Choose a forward gear with sufficient ground speed. Exercise caution when undercutting high banks. Keep the bucket level when approaching a bank or pile.
    • Peeling and Scraping: Use a slight bucket angle, travel forward, and hold the lift lever forward to start a short, 5-8 foot angle cut. Make additional passes, controlling bucket angle for a precise cut.
    • Backfilling: Approach the pile with a flat bucket. Do not use the bucket in the dumped position for bulldozing, as this imposes severe shock loads.
  • Safety:
    • Never lift or carry anyone on the loader or in the bucket.
    • Do not work under a raised loader unless it is securely blocked.
    • Fasten the seat belt if the tractor has a ROPS.
    • Operate from the operator's seat only.
    • Move and turn the tractor at low speeds.
    • Avoid loose fill, rocks, and holes.
    • Be careful on inclines and allow for loader length when turning.
    • Stop loader arms gradually when lifting or lowering.
    • Use caution with loose or shiftable loads.
    • Lower loader arms, stop the engine, and lock brakes before leaving the seat.
    • Ensure parked loaders are on a hard, level surface with all safety devices engaged.
    • Visually check for hydraulic leaks and broken parts.
    • Relieve hydraulic pressure before disconnecting lines.
    • Wear safety goggles during servicing.
    • Use a brass drift and hammer when servicing pins to prevent injury from flying metal fragments.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for maximum loader efficiency and long life:

  • Hydraulic System:
    • Check hydraulic oil level daily before operation. Add oil as recommended in the tractor operator's manual.
    • Promptly repair hydraulic oil leaks.
    • Hydraulic Pressure Check:
      1. Obtain a 3000 psi pressure gauge with 50 psi increments.
      2. Install the gauge into the hydraulic line from the loader valve to the cylinder base port of the bucket cylinders.
      3. Start the tractor engine and adjust the throttle to 1500 rpm.
      4. Push the loader valve handle to fully extend the cylinders, holding the handle to read the hydraulic system pressure.
      5. Compare the reading to the specified pressures (1200 psi for Ford 1300, 1500 psi for Ford 1500/1700).
      6. If pressure is incorrect, refer to the troubleshooting section.
  • Lubrication: Lubricate the four lubrication fittings (lift arm-to-side frame post pivot and bucket pivot) every eight hours of operation.
  • Hoses: Replace hoses immediately if severely damaged or leaking.
  • Hardware: Check all hardware and tighten where required every ten hours of operation.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a detailed troubleshooting table for common issues like slow loader operation, chattering, and noisy pump, providing causes and remedies (e.g., changing oil, cleaning/replacing filters, repairing pumps, checking for leaks, replacing seals/valves, freeing air from the system).

Assembly Instructions

The manual provides detailed instructions for assembling the loader, including:

  • Mounting Brackets: Attaching front mounting brackets and frame support brackets to the tractor frame and transmission case.
  • Boom Lift Frame: Screwing grease fittings into boom arms and attaching the boom frame to side frames.
  • Cylinders: Attaching rod ends and base ends of lift and bucket cylinders to side frames and boom.
