ENGINEERING INSIGHT
Smart Charging
What Smart Charging Is
• Standardfeaturethathelps
improve fuel efficiency
• Aregenerativeelectrical
charging system that
optimally charges the
battery, instead of having
the alternator charging the
battery, anytime the engine
is running
How It Works
• Smartchargingincreasesalternatoroutput
when the vehicle is braking or decelerating,
converting the moving (kinetic) energy into
electric energy
– Since there is no additional engine accessory
belt load to energize the battery, less fuel is
used by the engine
– The captured energy is used to charge the
battery and maintain optimum operating
levels of the electrical system
• CommunicateswiththeADFSOsystemto
ensure the battery is being optimally charged
– ADFSO will maintain normal engine operating
during deceleration should the battery require
additional charging
Key Benefits
• Helpstheengine
consume less fuel

to performance
• Aluminumcylinderheadwith4valvespercylinder
– Intake ports designed to optimize airflow and
fuel/air mixing for efficient internal combustion
at light loads
– Exhaust ports improve flow and help contribute
to lower smog-forming emissions

at different times in the combustion cycle, based on
speed and load
• Adjustscamtimingtoprovideoptimumperformance

• Outstandingefficiencyunderlowloadconditions
such as idling or highway cruising
• Remarkablepowerwhenaccelerating
Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shut-off
(ADFSO)
• Helpsmaximizefuelefficiencybytemporarily
interrupting fuel delivery and consumption when
the vehicle normally slows down, while maintaining
normal engine operation
• Systemisautomaticandrequiresnointeraction
from the driver
NOTE: See the Powertrain section in the Source Book
Appendices or on eSourceBook for more information.
