Overview

This document describes the Forest King 22 Ton Log Splitter (Model YTL-007-506), a heavy-duty hydraulic log splitter designed for efficiently splitting wood logs.

Function Description

The log splitter is designed to split wood logs lengthwise with the grain, utilizing a powerful hydraulic system. It can operate in both horizontal and vertical positions, offering versatility for different log sizes and user preferences. The splitting action is controlled by a lever that manages the forward and backward movement of the splitting wedge. The equipment is towable, making it easy to transport to various work sites.

  • Manual Start Engine: 209cc (Refer to the Engine Owner's Manual for specific engine details)

Usage Features

Controls and Components: The log splitter features a 7" wedge with wings and tapered ends for easier splitting. The beam is 8.5" wide. It includes a hydraulic reservoir, tires rated for a maximum towing speed of 45 MPH, and an air-cooled engine that powers the hydraulic pump. The tow bar consists of two parts (Tow Bar A and Tow Bar B) for easy movement with an ATV or lawn/garden tractor. A support leg helps stabilize the splitter during operation. Safety chains and a 2" coupler are provided for secure towing. The hydraulic cylinder has a 4" bore and 23" stroke, rated to 3600 psi. A control valve lever manages the wedge movement, and an external filter helps maintain hydraulic oil quality.

Operation Guidelines:

  • Safety First: Always read and understand the manual before operation. Wear safety gear including eye protection, gloves, and work boots.
  • Work Zone: Maintain at least seven feet of clearance from combustible material. Operate on a dry, level surface with good footing, avoiding mud, ice, brush, or snow. Keep bystanders out of the work zone.
  • Engine Operation: Ensure the engine is properly filled with SAE 10W-30 motor oil and regular unleaded fuel (minimum 87 octane). Do not operate indoors due to carbon monoxide risk.
  • Hydraulic System: The hydraulic oil needs to be above 10°F (-12°C) before starting. If outdoor temperatures are below 32°F (0°C), warm up the splitter by extending and returning the wedge several times.
  • Log Placement: Load logs onto the beam, ensuring they are placed correctly to avoid jams. If a log gets stuck, push the control lever in the reverse direction to strip the log from the wedge.
  • Horizontal Position: Used for lighter logs that can be easily loaded onto the beam. Proper lifting techniques are recommended to prevent back injury.
  • Towing: Always use safety chains, secure and lock the log splitter to the vehicle hitch. Do not exceed 45 MPH. Block wheels to prevent unintended movement when parked.

Pre-Operation Checks:

  • Inspect the log splitter for good working condition, replacing or repairing damaged parts immediately.
  • Check and tighten all hardware and assembled parts.
  • Verify hydraulic oil level and visually inspect hoses and attachments for problems.
  • Ensure engine oil level is correct.
  • Confirm tires are fully inflated (do not over-inflate).

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Maintenance Mode: Before performing any maintenance, turn off the engine and move the control lever to relieve hydraulic pressure.
  • Guards and Shields: Ensure all guards, shields, and safety features are in place after maintenance.
  • Tire Pressure: Verify tires have the recommended pressure before operation.
  • Lubrication: Regularly grease axle and wheel bearing areas. Annually clean and lightly lubricate all moving parts.
  • Fasteners and Hoses: Periodically check all fasteners and hoses for tightness and leaks.
  • Cosmetic Care: Use glossy enamel spray paint to touch up scratched or worn painted metal surfaces.
  • Load Capacity: Never exceed the 22-ton load capacity to prevent damage.

Specific Component Checks:

  • Hoses (Each Use): Inspect for exposed wire mesh and leaks. Replace worn or damaged hoses before starting the engine.
  • Hydraulic Fittings (Each Use): Inspect for cracks and leaks. Replace damaged fittings before starting the engine.
  • Nuts and Bolts (Each Use): Check for loose bolts and tighten before operating.
  • Beam (Each Use): Apply grease to the beam surface.
  • Moving Parts (Each Use): Clear debris from the log splitter.

Engine Maintenance: Refer to the separate Engine Owner's Manual for detailed engine maintenance instructions.

Storage:

  • Ensure the log splitter is clean and dry before storage.
  • Lightly lubricate all surfaces and moving parts to prevent rust.
  • Store indoors or in a protected area during severe weather and winter months.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the cylinder rod not moving, slow rod speed, wood not splitting, engine bogging down, or stalling. Solutions often involve checking oil levels, inspecting hoses for blockages, flushing hydraulic systems, adjusting control valves, or repairing damaged components.
