Overview

The WireOrLess Controller V3.16 is a versatile controller designed for slot car racing, offering both wireless and wired operation modes. It features extensive configuration options to customize the driving experience, including speed steps, launch control, performance curves, and trigger positions.

Function Description:

The controller allows users to set an ID for wireless pairing with a Carrera receiver. In wireless mode, it communicates with the receiver to control the slot car. For wired operation, it connects directly to a Control Unit or expansion box. The device includes a configuration mode accessible by specific button presses during power-on, allowing users to adjust various settings.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Wireless ID: Programmable to a specific ID for pairing with a Carrera receiver.
  • Power Source: Operates wirelessly with batteries; in cable mode, power is supplied by the Control Unit, and batteries are not required.
  • Battery Monitoring: LED flashes indicate battery status; more frequent flashes signify a depleting battery. The controller switches off at 1.8V.
  • Rechargeable Batteries: Can be used, but recharging is recommended at one flash per second to prevent deep discharge.
  • Sleep Mode: Enters power-saving sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery.
  • Default Settings: Speed steps 44Plus, Launch Control active, Curve 1 active, default starting point, full throttle point preset.

Usage Features:

Setting ID and Pairing:

To set the ID and pair, switch off the controller, select the desired ID on the Carrera receiver, press and hold the crossover button, then move the power switch to the right (wireless mode). The receiver confirms programming with a "7-segment round trip," and the controller is ready. The number of flashes upon switching on indicates the programmed ID.

Activating Configuration Mode:

Ensure the controller is paired and the receiver is active (or in cable mode connected to a powered Control Unit). Switch off the controller. Press and hold the gas control knob (full throttle) and the switch button. While holding, switch on the controller (right for radio mode, left for cable mode). The LED lights up. Release the switch button, then release the trigger. The configuration process begins.

Number of Speed Steps:

The controller offers several options for speed steps:

  • 1 flash: Original Carrera 16 speed steps
  • 3 flashes: Speedflow control 30 speed steps
  • 4 flashes: Speedflow control 44 speed levels
  • 5 flashes: WOL 44Plus To select, press the switch button briefly. To save, press and hold until the LED flashes quickly, then release.

Launch Control:

Launch Control can be activated or deactivated:

  • 1 flash: Deactivated
  • 2 flashes: Launch Control available Select by pressing briefly, save by pressing and holding until the LED flashes quickly.

Performance Curve Selection:

The performance curve dictates how trigger input translates to motor power. Fine-tuning is done via a trimmer knob on the controller's side, adjustable even during driving.

  • 1 flash: Simple curve (preferred by most)
  • 2 flashes: S-shaped curve Select by pressing briefly, save by pressing and holding until the LED flashes quickly. The trimmer knob bends the curve; a center position results in a straight line.

Setting Trigger Start Position:

In configuration mode, slowly press the trigger. The LED is off until the start position is crossed, then it turns on. To set a new start position, move the trigger to the desired point, hold it steady, and press the switch button until the LED flashes, confirming the save.

Setting Full Throttle Trigger Position:

Similar to the start position, the LED switches on/off when crossing the full throttle point. To set, hold the trigger at the desired full throttle position and press the switch button until the LED flashes.

Quick Menu - NCE FET Curve:

This mode addresses aggressive performance curves in some original decoders. To activate/deactivate: switch off the controller (middle position), press and hold the gas completely, move the On/Off switch to the right, then release the trigger.

  • 1 flash: Deactivated
  • 2 flashes: NCE-FET compensation curve active Select by pressing briefly, save by pressing and holding until the LED flashes quickly.

Cable Operation:

Switch off the controller (center position). Plug the supplied cable (with the central latch plug) into the controller and the other end into the control unit. Move the On/Off switch to the far left to set to cable operation. In this mode, the controller works without batteries, and configuration menus are accessible.

Maintenance Features:

Checking Battery Condition:

In wireless mode, the LED flashes regularly. Increased flash frequency indicates a depleting battery. Approximately three flashes per second mean the battery is running low. The controller automatically switches off at 1.8V.

Resetting to Factory Default Settings:

Switch off the controller. Press and hold both the trigger and turnout button during power-on for about 10 seconds. The controller acknowledges the reset after about 8 seconds with a steady flashing signal. After the reset, the controller can be switched off and on again, returning to its default settings. After a reset, it is recommended to reconfigure the start and full throttle trigger points for optimal operation.

Waking from Sleep Mode:

To wake the controller from sleep mode, press the switch button. Alternatively, switch the controller off and then on again.
