Overview

The Orange FrSky USB Dongle is a device designed to interface FrSky aircraft radio and module systems with a computer, primarily for use with flight simulators. It functions as a 6-channel output to a standard USB Human Interface Device (HID), making it compatible with a wide range of open-source simulators such as Freerider, HotProps, Liftoff, DRL, and many others.

Technical Specifications:

  • Compatibility: FrSky aircraft radio and module systems.
  • Output: 6 channels to a standard USB HID device.
  • Dimensions: 10.5mm x 23.5mm x 52.5mm.
  • Current Consumption: 40mA.

Usage Features:

Installation and Binding:

Before the dongle can be used, it needs to be bound to your transmitter, similar to a regular receiver.

  1. Binding Process: Insert the dongle into any available USB port on your PC while holding down its button. Release the button once inserted. The dongle's LED will blink rapidly, indicating it's in binding mode.
  2. Transmitter Binding: Initiate the binding process on your FrSky transmitter. Once successfully bound, the dongle's LED will become solid.
  3. Unplug and Replug: Unplug the dongle from the USB port, then plug it back in.
  4. Distance for Binding: For proper binding, maintain a distance of 1 to 2 meters between the transmitter and the dongle.
  5. Automatic Driver Installation: Upon plugging in, Windows will automatically identify the dongle as a standard HID device and install the necessary drivers. For Mac users, relevant HID device drivers must be used.

Verification of Installation:

In the "Devices and Printers" section of your operating system, you should see a pictogram labeled "FrSky USB HID," indicating that the dongle has been installed correctly.

Game Controller Settings:

  1. Access Settings: Right-click on the "FrSky USB HID" pictogram and select "Game Controller Settings."
  2. Properties: Within the "Game Controller Settings" window, click on "Properties."
  3. Channel Check and Calibration: A new window titled "USB CC2511 HID properties" will appear. This window has "Settings" and "Test" tabs. The "Test" tab allows you to check the functionality of the game controller, displaying the movement of axes (Z Axis, X Rotation, Y Rotation, Z Rotation, Dial, Slider) as you manipulate your transmitter. If the controller is not functioning properly, it may need to be calibrated. The "Settings" tab provides options for calibration.

Maintenance Features:

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features beyond the initial setup and calibration. However, the ability to check and calibrate channels through the "Game Controller Settings" can be considered a form of user-level maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
