Variometer Sensor— VARI ADV
The Variometer sensor calculates the altitude from atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure will get lower as
you go up in altitude, using this the sensor will estimate the altitude. An exact display cannot be performed if
atmospheric pressure changes in weather.

Overview

The FrSky Variometer Sensor (VARI ADV) is a compact and lightweight device designed to provide altitude and altitude rate information for remote-controlled models when used in conjunction with a FrSky telemetry transmitter/receiver. This sensor is crucial for pilots who need real-time feedback on their model's vertical position and movement.

Function Description:

The primary function of the FrSky Variometer Sensor is to calculate altitude based on atmospheric pressure. As a model ascends, atmospheric pressure decreases, and the sensor uses this change to estimate the current altitude. It also provides the rate of altitude change, indicating whether the model is climbing or descending and at what speed. This information is transmitted wirelessly to the pilot's telemetry-enabled radio, allowing for immediate awareness of the model's vertical performance. It's important to note that an exact altitude display cannot be guaranteed if atmospheric pressure changes due to weather conditions, as the sensor relies on a stable atmospheric pressure baseline for accurate readings.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Type: Variometer sensor
  • Dimensions: 40mm (Length) x 21mm (Width) x 6.5mm (Height)
  • Weight: 3.4g, making it extremely light and suitable for various model sizes without significantly impacting flight performance.
  • Measurement Range: -1800 meters to 10000 meters with a precision of 0.1 meters. This wide range covers typical flight altitudes for most RC models.
  • Operational Voltage: DC 4-10V, providing flexibility for power sources commonly found in RC setups.
  • Operational Current: 4mA, indicating low power consumption, which is beneficial for extending flight times.
  • Units: Supports both Metric and Imperial units, allowing users to choose their preferred measurement system.
  • Protocols: The sensor supports both the S.Port (Smart Port) and FBUS (F.Port2.0) protocols. FBUS is an upgraded protocol from version 1.0, enabling one Host device to communicate on a single line with multiple Slave accessories. S.Port also supports FBUS protocols.
  • Default Physical ID: The sensor has a default physical ID of "00," which can be changed using FrSky's FreeLink software.

Usage Features:

  • Telemetry Integration: The sensor is designed specifically for use with FrSky telemetry systems, ensuring seamless integration and data transmission to compatible FrSky receivers and transmitters.
  • Daisy Chaining: All FrSky Smart Port enabled sensors, including the Variometer, can be daisy-chained together through their Smart Port. This feature simplifies wiring and allows multiple sensors to share a single connection to the receiver, reducing clutter and complexity in the model.
  • LED Indicators: The sensor includes an LED that provides status feedback:
    • Flash slowly: Indicates that the sensor is operating correctly with the S.Port protocol.
    • Flash quickly: Indicates that the sensor is operating correctly with the FBUS protocol.
  • Protocol Flexibility: The support for both S.Port and FBUS protocols ensures compatibility with a wide range of FrSky telemetry receivers and allows users to leverage the benefits of the newer FBUS protocol for multi-sensor setups.
  • Easy Installation: The compact size and lightweight design facilitate easy installation within various RC models. The sensor connects to the FrSky receiver via a dedicated FBUS/S.Port cable.
  • Altitude Calculation: The sensor continuously calculates altitude based on atmospheric pressure, providing real-time data that can be displayed on the pilot's radio screen or used for logging.
  • Altitude Rate Information: In addition to absolute altitude, the sensor provides the rate of climb or descent, which is invaluable for thermal soaring, altitude hold, or general flight performance monitoring.

Maintenance Features:

  • Firmware Updates: FrSky continuously adds features and improvements to its products. Users are encouraged to check the download section of the FrSky website (www.frsky-rc.com) for the latest firmware updates and manuals. This ensures the sensor operates with the most current features and bug fixes.
  • ID Configuration: The sensor's physical ID can be changed using FrSky's FreeLink software. This feature is useful in complex setups with multiple sensors to ensure proper identification and data management.
  • Polarity Protection (Implicit): While the manual warns against incorrect polarity connections, implying that such connections could cause damage, it's good practice to always double-check wiring to prevent issues. FrSky explicitly states it is not responsible for damage caused by wrong polarity connection, highlighting the importance of careful installation.
  • Robust Design: The sensor's small and enclosed design helps protect its internal components from environmental factors during flight, contributing to its durability.

In summary, the FrSky Variometer Sensor (VARI ADV) is an essential telemetry accessory for RC enthusiasts seeking precise altitude and altitude rate information. Its compact size, low power consumption, wide measurement range, and compatibility with FrSky's advanced telemetry protocols make it a valuable tool for enhancing flight awareness and performance. Regular firmware updates and careful installation ensure optimal operation and longevity.
