The FRYKA Hei-CHILL 400 Pro is a recirculating chiller designed for temperature control and circulation of suitable coolants in various applications. It is a compact and efficient device, featuring a robust design and user-friendly interface for precise temperature management.
Function Description
The Hei-CHILL 400 Pro operates on a temperature control circuit that includes a tank where the temperature fluid is cooled, a pump for circulating the coolant, and hoses for connecting to an external part of the circuit. The refrigeration circuit is a hermetically sealed, technically tight circuit filled with refrigerant. Key components include:
- Compressor: Draws gaseous refrigerant and increases its pressure and temperature.
- Condenser: Cools the refrigerant by releasing heat to the ambient air, aided by a fan.
- Expansion element: Reduces the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant.
- Evaporator: Extracts heat from the coolant, causing the refrigerant to evaporate and cool the coolant.
The device is designed for continuous operation and provides precise temperature control, making it suitable for laboratory, industrial, and other applications requiring stable temperature conditions.

Usage Features
The device features a clear control panel with a display and buttons for operation:
- Display: Shows operating status, temperature, and error messages.
- Buttons: "on/off", "set", "pump", "arrow up", "arrow down" for controlling the device.
- Indicators: Compressor operation, pump operation, and alarm.
Commissioning:
- Setting up the device: Ensure proper ventilation and avoid placing the device in an explosive atmosphere.
- Connecting the external temperature control circuit: Use appropriate hoses and secure connections to prevent leaks.
- Connecting the device: Connect to a suitable power supply.
- Filling the device and switching on for the first time: Fill the device with the recommended temperature fluid (between 3.0 and 4.0 liters) up to the "max" mark. Switch on the device using the "on/off" button and then the "pump" button to start circulation.
Control and Operation:
- Switching on: Press the "on/off" button. The display shows the current temperature and the cooling unit starts operating.
- Switching on the pump: Press the "pump" button to start circulation of the temperature fluid. Ensure the temperature circuit is not blocked.
- Setting the desired temperature: Use the "set" button and "arrow up"/"arrow down" buttons to adjust the desired temperature.
- Switching off: Press the "on/off" button. The pump and cooling are then switched off.
Coolant Level:
- The fill level is visible through a blue viewing window.
- "min": Minimum fill level. Reduced cooling capacity.
- "max": Maximum fill level. Full cooling capacity.
- If the fill level is below "min", an alarm message "FLO" flashes, and an alarm tone sounds.
- The alarm can be temporarily silenced by pressing the "arrow down" button.
- To protect against defects, the refrigeration unit and pump are switched off.
- Refill with coolant (see "Filling the device and switching on for the first time" section).
- When the minimum fill level is reached, the refrigeration unit and pump are set to the operating state that was active before the alarm.
Troubleshooting:
The manual provides a detailed table of error messages (e.g., temperature range alarm, sensor errors, boundary alarms, low coolant level) with descriptions, causes, and remedies. For instance, if the temperature display flashes and an alarm sounds, it indicates that the coolant temperature deviates from the working range. The remedy is to press the "on/off" button to turn on the device, and the alarm is automatically deactivated when the temperature returns to the permitted range.
Maintenance Features
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the Hei-CHILL 400 Pro.
Cleaning the Condenser:
- Risk of explosion or ignition of leaking refrigerant: Maintenance work may only be carried out by instructed, competent personnel. Do not damage the condenser or other parts of the refrigeration circuit piping.
- Risk of sharp fins: Avoid direct contact with the condenser fins.
- Overheating and defect of the device: Depending on the degree of soiling at the installation site, the condenser should be cleaned at least every 6 months.
- Procedure:
- Switch off the device.
- Disconnect the device from the mains.
- Loosen the fixing screws of the grille at the back.
- Pull the grille off to the rear.
- The condenser is mounted horizontally above the compressor (white highlighting).
- Clean the condenser with compressed air or a hand broom/vacuum cleaner.
- Replace the front grille.
Cleaning the Device:
- Risk of liquid in the device / electric shock: Do not spill liquid on the device.
- Procedure:
- Switch off the device.
- Disconnect the device from the mains.
- Wipe the device with a damp cloth. Do not use any aggressive cleaners or cleaning agents containing solvents on the plastic surfaces.
Checking the Coolant:
- Check the pH value of the coolant annually. If the value is below 7 (acidic), the coolant must be replaced to prevent damage to the temperature control circuit.
- Replace the coolant at the latest when it becomes very discoloured, smells, or the temperature control circuit becomes clogged.
Draining the Coolant:
- Risk of contact with cold coolant / frostbite: Bring the device with the coolant to room temperature before emptying.
- Procedure:
- Press the "pump" button to switch off the pump. The "pump" LED stops lighting up.
- Pull the hose off the left hose connection (IN).
- Place the end of the hose in a container that can completely absorb the coolant present in the entire temperature control circuit.
- Switch the pump on again. The coolant is now pumped into the container. If the level falls below the minimum level, the pump and refrigeration unit are automatically switched off and the alarm message "FLO" is displayed.
- Press the "on/off" button to switch off the device.
- The rest of the coolant can be poured out via the filler neck or remain in the device after closing the filler neck.
- Observe the instructions for disposal in the safety data sheet and any local regulations.
Disposal:
Old devices are not worthless waste. Valuable raw materials can be recovered through environmentally sound disposal. FRYKA devices are marked with the symbol of the crossed-out wheeled bin, indicating they must be collected separately from unsorted municipal waste. They are intended for commercial use and may therefore not be disposed of at public collection points. The device contains flammable refrigerants in a hermetically sealed circuit; do not damage the circuit. Disposal may only be carried out by a specialist company.
Transport and Packaging:
- Follow instructions for draining the coolant.
- Clean and decontaminate the device.
- Pack the device in the original packaging.
- Only ship the device upright, never lying down.
- Ship the device upright on a pallet by forwarding agent.
- Returning goods: Risk of poisoning or infection from toxic or infectious substances. Never ship contaminated devices. Decontaminate the device from poisonous or infectious substances before shipment.
- Storage: Only store the device completely emptied and cleaned in dry indoor rooms, upright, to avoid damage to the refrigeration circuit. Permissible ambient temperature: 5 to 40 °C. Permissible ambient humidity: max. 70% relative humidity, non-condensing.
