Operating Instructions for the LG1485 Battery Charger
Foreword
Dear Customer,
Please read these operating instructions carefully before you use the LG1485 Battery Charger.
Pay particular attention to the safety notices on the following pages.
Keep these instructions for future reference and pass the documentation on to any future owners.
Brief Description and Functionality
The LG1485 Battery Charger is a charger and testing device for up to four rechargeable batteries, featuring an integrated
System Management Bus (SMBus).
The device can be used to charge any combination of two-cell (7.2 V) and three-cell (10.8 V) rechargeable lithium ion
batteries.
The battery charger communicates with the batteries via the SMBus. When a battery is inserted into the charger slot, the battery
charger automatically checks whether the battery only needs to be charged or requires a full testing cycle (conditioning).
To measure and optimize battery capacity and to recalibrate the SMBus system, the device alternates between charge and
discharge cycles during the full testing cycle. Once the testing cycle is complete, the battery is ready for use. The battery
status is shown by the testing LED (see the table on the following page).
The testing cycle can be started and stopped individually for each battery by pressing the corresponding button.

Overview

The LG1485 Battery Charger is an intelligent electronic device designed for charging and testing rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. It features an integrated System Management Bus (SMBus) for communication with the batteries and supports various charging and testing modes.

Function Description:

The LG1485 Battery Charger serves as both a charger and a testing device for up to four rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. It is compatible with two-cell (7.2 V) and three-cell (10.8 V) batteries. Upon insertion of a battery into a charger slot, the device automatically detects the battery type and determines whether it requires a standard charge or a full testing cycle (conditioning). The SMBus system facilitates communication with the batteries, allowing the charger to check their status and manage the charging or testing process.

For optimal battery capacity and recalibration of the SMBus system, the device performs a full testing cycle, which involves alternating between charge and discharge cycles. This conditioning process ensures accurate measurement and optimization of battery performance. Once the testing cycle is complete, the battery is ready for use, and its status (good, reduced capacity, or replace) is indicated by a testing LED. The testing cycle for each battery can be manually started or stopped using the corresponding button.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Number of Li-ion cells: 2 cells (7.2 V) or 3 cells (10.8 V)
  • Charge current: max. 3 A
  • Charging/discharging capacity: max. 150 W / max. 50 W
  • Power supply: 100-240 V AC / 50-60 Hz / max. 2.0 A
  • Power consumption: max. 175 W
  • Standby power: max. 5 W
  • Protection class: IP20
  • Operating conditions: Temperature 0-35°C, rel. humidity range 20-90%, altitude 0-2000 m
  • Storage conditions: Temperature 0-60°C, rel. humidity range 10-95%, altitude 0–5000 m
  • Dimensions: 80 x 313 x 261 mm (H x W x D)
  • Weight: Approx. 3.0 kg
  • Compliance: UL62368-1:2014, CE mark in accordance with European Low Voltage Directive and EMC Directive.

Charging Information:

  • Standard charging time: 175 minutes, maximum charging time: 300 minutes
  • Standard testing cycle time: 11 hours
  • Max. battery voltage: 12.6 V
  • Max. battery capacity: 7500 mAh

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Battery Detection: The device automatically detects the battery type and switches to the appropriate charging mode.
  • Conditioning Cycle: If the testing LED flashes yellow, a testing cycle is required. This cycle involves a first battery charge, battery discharge, and a second battery charge to measure and optimize capacity.
  • Manual Control: The testing cycle can be started and stopped individually for each battery by pressing the corresponding button.
  • Status Indicators: LEDs provide clear indications of the battery status:
    • Charging LED (yellow flashing): Charging in progress.
    • Charging LED (green): Battery fully charged.
    • Testing LED (yellow flashing): Testing cycle in progress (discharging).
    • Testing LED (permanently lit green): Capacity OK.
    • Testing LED (permanently lit yellow): Reduced capacity.
    • Testing LED (permanently lit red): Insufficient capacity (replace battery).
    • Both LEDs (flashing red): Battery error.
  • Error Detection: The charger detects various battery errors, such as mains voltage outside range, maximum charging time exceeded, battery overcharge, and SMBus communication failures.
  • Supported Batteries: Only specific Philips rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are to be used: M4605A (3S3P), M4607A (3S1P), and 989803196521 (3S1P).
  • Firmware Updates: The device includes a USB port (type B USB 1.0/2.0 connector) on the left side for updating its firmware via an external PC.

Maintenance Features:

  • Air Filter Cleaning: The device features air filters on both the right and left sides. It is recommended to regularly clean or replace the air filter material every 6-24 months, depending on usage frequency and ambient conditions.
  • User-Replaceable Filters: Users can clean or replace the air filter material themselves by disconnecting the mains plug, removing two screws and the filter cover, shaking out or replacing the material, and then reinserting the components.
  • Safety Precautions: Before any maintenance or repair, the device must be disconnected from the mains power supply. Repairs should only be carried out by qualified professionals working for the manufacturer. Users are warned not to attempt repairs themselves due to the risk of electric shock from the intermediate circuit capacitor and injury from running fan blades.

Environmental Notices:

The packaging materials should be sorted and disposed of appropriately. At the end of its service life, the product must not be disposed of as standard domestic waste but taken to a recycling collection point for electrical and electronic equipment. The materials are recyclable, and their reuse or recycling contributes to environmental protection. Local authorities can provide information on relevant disposal sites.
