Log Book for Measuring Resistance

A log book to record resistance measurements for explosion protection verification.

Overview

The Movex ME 100 EX is a local extraction arm designed for use in environments where potentially explosive atmospheres may occur. This equipment is specifically engineered to meet the requirements of the ATEX directive 2014/34/EU, ensuring its suitability for hazardous locations. The primary function of the ME 100 EX is to capture and remove airborne contaminants, such as gases, mists, vapors, and dusts, at their source, thereby maintaining a safer working environment.

Function Description

The ME 100 EX extraction arm operates by drawing in contaminated air through a suction head, which is positioned close to the source of emissions. This air then travels through a series of articulated arm segments and a hose to an external ventilation system, where it is filtered and discharged. The arm's design allows for precise positioning and maneuverability, ensuring effective capture of pollutants before they can disperse into the general workspace.

A key feature of the ME 100 EX is its explosion-proof integrity. All components are selected and constructed to prevent the ignition of explosive atmospheres. This includes the use of conductive materials for plastic details, damper blades, and other parts to dissipate electrostatic charges, thereby minimizing the risk of sparks. The grounding system is a critical aspect of its explosion protection, ensuring that any static electricity generated is safely channeled to the earth.

The arm's articulated joints allow for a wide range of motion, enabling the user to position the suction head exactly where needed. These joints are designed to be easily set and retained in position without dropping, ensuring stability during operation. The internal structure includes ground cables that move freely across the joints, maintaining electrical continuity throughout the arm's range of movement.

Usage Features

The ME 100 EX is suitable for use in environments classified as zones 1 or 21 for gas and dust, respectively, meaning it can be used where explosive atmospheres are likely to occur occasionally. It is also suitable for zones 2 or 22, where such occurrences are less frequent. The equipment is designed for use in normal temperature and air pressure conditions.

When using the ME 100 EX, it is crucial to ensure that the atmosphere does not contain substances that could attack or react with the materials of the arm, as this could compromise its explosion-proof integrity. Users should avoid using the equipment with non-conductive dusts that have a Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE) less than 4 mJ if there is a risk of the dust becoming highly charged.

Installation of the ME 100 EX involves mounting the arm to a wall or ceiling using specialized brackets. The installation process requires careful attention to detail, including fitting the wall bracket, installing the arm, and connecting the ground cables to the wall bracket and the overall grounding system of the installation. The bearing capacity of the wall or ceiling must be adequate to support the weight of the arm.

Prior to initial operation, the resistance of the arm must be measured to ensure it meets satisfactory values, and the connection to the earth system must be checked. This is a vital step to confirm the explosion protection integrity. During operation, users should be mindful of potential hazards, such as sparks or objects that could cause sparks, and protect the suction head and arm from impacts. When extracting different types of dust, especially in combination, it is important to verify that the mixture is not ignitable.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the continued explosion-proof integrity and effective operation of the ME 100 EX. The extraction arm should be cleaned at least once a year, or more frequently as needed, in the same manner as other equipment at the worksite. Cleaning should only be performed when there is no risk of explosion in the environment.

When cleaning, it is important to be aware of the risk of electrostatic discharge from people or cleaning tools, especially when dust deposits are present. Personnel are recommended to wear semi-conductive shoes and suitable clothing when cleaning in dusty environments where the MIE is less than 30 mJ. Respiratory protective equipment and other appropriate personal safety gear should also be worn.

For dry cleaning, the arm should be vacuumed externally and internally. For wet cleaning, it is crucial to ensure that the solvent used does not attack any of the arm's materials. After wet cleaning, the equipment must be allowed to dry completely before being used again. Following any cleaning, the resistance to ground must be remeasured to confirm its satisfactory value.

In addition to routine cleaning, the equipment's resistance should be remeasured at least twice a year, or each time the equipment is worked on. This helps identify any deterioration in the explosion protection. During these checks, the connections at the earth lines, spiral hose, and earth point should also be inspected for corrosion or loose connections, which is particularly important in damp or corrosive environments.

Service and repairs should only be carried out when there is no risk of explosion. When servicing in dusty environments, personnel should wear semi-conductive shoes and suitable clothing. Only original spare parts should be used for repairs to maintain the explosion-proof integrity. If the resistance is noticeably higher than acceptable, the fault source must be identified by measuring resistance at different points along the arm, starting from the suction head and moving towards the attachment.

A log book for measuring resistance is provided to document resistance values, which helps in tracking any deterioration in explosion protection over time. In cases of reduced suction capacity, users should check that the damper is not closed, all connections are tight, and the fan is in satisfactory condition.
