Overview

This document describes the PODIUM Programmable RC Car Speed Controller, an electronic speed controller (ESC) designed for remote-controlled (RC) cars.

Function Description:

The PODIUM ESC is a fully programmable speed controller that manages the power delivery to the motor in an RC car. It offers precise control over acceleration, braking, and reverse functions, allowing for a customized driving experience. Key features include ultra-high frequency operation for smooth control, forward and reverse with an Anti-lock Brake System (A.B.S) for enhanced handling, and easy-to-use single-button setup. It also incorporates a high-temperature safety cut-off system to prevent damage from overheating. The ESC is designed to work with various battery types, including NiCd, NiMH, and LiPo.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Input Power (NiCd & NiMH): 6-7 cells (7.2-8.4V)
  • Input Power (LiPo): 2 cells
  • Operating Frequency: 1.0 kHz
  • B.E.C. Constant Current: 5.0V
  • B.E.C Output Voltage: 1.0A
  • On-Resistance: 0.002 ohms
  • Cutoff Voltage: NiCd / NiMH (4.0V) & LiPo (5.5V)
  • Motor Turns Limit: 8 turns
  • Acceleration Time Delays: 0.09, 0.16, 0.27 sec. (programmable)
  • Weight with Wires: 63g
  • Case Size: 35 x 27 x 17 mm
  • MOSFET Transistor Operation: For maximum power output & the greatest efficiency.
  • Factory Installed: Radio, battery, and motor connectors.

Usage Features:

  • Fully Programmable: Allows for fine-tuning of various track conditions and driving styles.
  • Excellent High Output ESC: Delivers strong and consistent power to the motor.
  • Ultra High Frequency & Performance: Ensures smooth and responsive control.
  • Forward & Reverse w/ A.B.S (Anti-lock Brake System): Provides controlled braking and reverse capabilities.
  • Easy-to-Use Single Button Setup: Simplifies the initial configuration process.
  • Speed Up Function: Offers three programmable acceleration time delays: Minimum Rising Time (Normal Track), Medium Rising Time, and Maximum Rising Time (Slick Track).
  • Reverse Delay Function: Designed to achieve the proper amount of brake during racing and prevent accidental use of the reverse function.
  • High-Temperature Safety Cut-Off System: Temporarily shuts off power to the motor if the ESC temperature exceeds maximum ratings, preventing overheating damage.
  • Battery Type Setup (NiCd, NiMH & LiPo): Allows selection of the battery type for appropriate voltage cutoff.
  • Reverse Delay Function: This function is designed to achieve the proper amount of brake during racing and prevent accidental use of the reverse function. To enable the brake, while the transmitter throttle is in the full forward position, if the throttle is moved to the full reverse position, the brake should be activated. To enable the reverse function, while the transmitter throttle is in the full forward position, move and keep the throttle in the Neutral position for a while then move it back to the full reverse position.
  • Setup Procedure:
    1. Transmitter Adjustments: Set ATV, EPA, or ATL to maximum; throttle trims and sub trims to neutral or zero.
    2. ESC Connection: Adjust transmitter, connect ESC to receiver, ensure ESC switch is "Off" before connecting battery, then turn "On" transmitter followed by ESC.
    3. Programming Neutral Position: With transmitter throttle in "Neutral," press and hold the setup button until the green LED flashes, then release.
    4. Programming Full Throttle: Move transmitter throttle to "full throttle forward." The red LED will light up.
    5. Programming Full Brake & Reverse: Move transmitter throttle to "full brake & full reverse." Red and green LEDs will light up.
    6. Programming A.B.S: Move transmitter throttle to neutral for ~3 seconds (red & green LEDs blink alternately). Move throttle to full throttle or full reverse, then return to neutral. The red LED will blink to indicate A.B.S is set.
    7. Erasing A.B.S: Follow steps 3-5, but omit moving the transmitter throttle while red & green LEDs blink.
    8. Completion: Green LED lights up, indicating readiness.
  • Installation:
    • ON / OFF Switch: Mount in a convenient place using double-sided tape.
    • Receiver: Mount as far as possible from the motor, power wires, batteries, and servo to prevent radio interference. For off-road cars, mount on the rear shock tower. For graphite chassis, mount on edge with crystal and antenna away from the chassis.
    • ESC: Determine the best location for efficient airflow through transistors. Mount to the chassis using double-sided tape.

Maintenance Features:

  • Safety Precautions:
    • Read instructions carefully before use.
    • Avoid running the car in or around water; prevent water, moisture, or foreign materials from entering the ESC.
    • Use only 6-7 cells for NiCd/NiMH and 2 cells for LiPo.
    • Always disconnect the battery pack from the speed controller when not in use.
    • Turn on the ESC after plugging it into the receiver and switching on the transmitter.
    • Always check battery polarity; reverse polarity will damage the speed controller.
    • Do not touch transistors when hot.
    • Avoid short-circuits between cables.
    • Install the speed controller to prevent contact with grease, water, or oil.
  • High-Temperature Safety Cut-Out System: This system automatically protects the ESC from damage by temporarily shutting off power to the motor if the temperature exceeds maximum ratings, allowing it to cool down.
  • Troubleshooting: In case of programming problems, turn off the ESC and program again.
