Troubleshooting
1. Please make sure the power supply is oriented correctly such that the cooling fan is
not blocked. If the case or chassis does not have air vents at the bottom, then orient
the power supply so that the fan intakes air from inside the case.
2. It is vital that the correct end of the power cables are connected to the correct port
or device. The connector ends are not interchangeable. The connectors are keyed to
assist you to connect it to the correct port. Do not force connectors into the ports.
3. Please make sure that the power supply provides more than suicient power for all
of your hardware components. Do not use the power supply beyond its maximum
power output.
4. If the system does not power on, please check the following:
Check to see if the I/O switch on the rear of the power supply is ipped to the ON
position (marked by the “I” symbol)
Check and make sure the AC power cord is securely connected to the PSU and
the wall socket. If the AC power cord is connected to an extension cord or power
strip, please try connecting it directly to the wall socket.
Check and make sure both ends of all power cables are securely connected to
the PSU and each component.
Try to completely discharge the power supply. To do so, unplug the AC power
cord from the power supply, and then press and hold the power button on the
case or motherboard for ten seconds or until all LED indicator lights on the
motherboard is o. Reconnect the AC power cord to the power supply and power
on the system again.

Overview

This document describes the G.SKILL MB850G 850W Power Supply, a component designed to provide stable and efficient power to computer systems.

Function Description

The G.SKILL MB850G is an 850W power supply unit (PSU) that converts alternating current (AC) from a wall socket into direct current (DC) to power various computer hardware components. Its primary function is to deliver reliable and consistent power to the motherboard, CPU, graphics cards, storage drives, and other peripherals within a computer system. The power supply is designed to ensure that all connected components receive the appropriate voltage and current levels for optimal operation. It features a full modular design, which means that all power cables are detachable. This allows users to connect only the necessary cables, reducing clutter inside the computer case and improving airflow. The unit is also equipped with an ultra-quiet 120mm fan, which provides efficient cooling while minimizing noise during operation.

Usage Features

The G.SKILL MB850G power supply is designed for ease of installation and use, with several features aimed at enhancing the user experience and system performance.

  • Installation: Before installation, users should ensure the PSU's I/O switch is in the "OFF" (O) position. The PSU is then mounted into the computer case or chassis. Connecting the cables involves attaching the main 20+4pin ATX connector to the motherboard, adapting to 20-pin sockets by detaching the 4-pin connector if necessary. The 4+4pin CPU connector is connected to the motherboard, with users advised to check their motherboard manual for requirements regarding a second set of 4+4pin connectors. For graphics cards, 6+2pin PCIe connectors are used, detaching the two extra pins for 6-pin sockets. SATA connectors power storage drives (HDDs, SSDs) and optical drives, while 4pin molex peripheral connectors power legacy storage, optical drives, fans, or other peripherals. After all connectors are firmly and securely attached, the AC power cord is connected to the PSU and the wall socket, and the I/O switch is flipped to the "ON" (I) position to power on the system.

  • Cable Management: The full modular design is a significant usage feature, allowing users to select and connect only the cables required for their specific components. This flexibility helps in achieving cleaner cable management within the computer case, which in turn improves airflow and contributes to better overall system cooling. Reduced cable clutter also makes it easier to access components for upgrades or maintenance.

  • Efficiency: The power supply is 80 Plus Gold Certified, indicating that it achieves up to 90% power efficiency at 50% load. This high efficiency translates into several benefits for the user, including lower energy consumption, reduced heat generation, and quieter operation. Lower heat generation also contributes to the longevity of the power supply and other system components.

  • Protection Features: The MB850G incorporates a comprehensive suite of protection features to safeguard both the power supply and connected components from electrical and thermal irregularities. These include:

    • OVP (Over Voltage Protection): Prevents damage from excessive voltage.
    • UVP (Under Voltage Protection): Protects against insufficient voltage.
    • OCP (Over Current Protection): Guards against excessive current draw.
    • OPP (Over Power Protection): Prevents damage from exceeding the maximum power output.
    • SCP (Short Circuit Protection): Protects against short circuits.
    • OTP (Over Temperature Protection): Shuts down the unit if it overheats. These protections ensure the stability and safety of the computer system during operation.
  • Active PFC (Power Factor Correction): This feature ensures high efficiency power usage, which can lead to more stable power delivery and potentially lower electricity bills.

Maintenance Features

The G.SKILL MB850G is designed with considerations for long-term reliability and minimal maintenance, though certain user actions are crucial for its proper functioning and longevity.

  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for common issues, particularly if the system fails to power on.

    • Power Supply Orientation: Users are advised to ensure the power supply is oriented correctly so that the cooling fan is not blocked. If the case lacks bottom air vents, the PSU should be oriented to intake air from inside the case.
    • Cable Connections: It is critical to ensure that the correct ends of power cables are connected to the appropriate ports or devices. Connectors are keyed to prevent incorrect insertion, and force should not be used. All power cables must be securely connected to both the PSU and each component.
    • Power Output: Users must ensure the power supply provides sufficient power for all hardware components and should not operate it beyond its maximum power output.
    • Power On Checks: If the system does not power on, users should verify that the I/O switch on the rear of the PSU is in the "ON" position (marked "I"). The AC power cord must be securely connected to both the PSU and the wall socket. If an extension cord or power strip is used, connecting directly to the wall socket is recommended.
    • Power Discharge: A common troubleshooting step involves completely discharging the power supply. This is done by unplugging the AC power cord from the PSU, then pressing and holding the case or motherboard power button for ten seconds, or until all LED indicator lights on the motherboard are off. After this, the AC power cord can be reconnected, and the system powered on again.
  • Prohibited Actions: To ensure the longevity and safe operation of the power supply, several actions are strictly prohibited:

    • Opening the Case: Users must NOT open the power supply case or attempt repairs, as it contains high voltage and no user-serviceable parts, posing a risk of electrocution.
    • Unplugging During Use: The AC power line should NOT be unplugged while the power supply is in use, as this can damage components.
    • Environmental Conditions: The power supply should NOT be used near water or in environments with high temperature or high humidity.
    • Obstruction: Users must NOT insert objects through the fan grills or ventilation openings, nor should they block these openings.
    • Cable Modification: The cables or connectors included with the power supply should NOT be modified. Only manufacturer-provided cables should be used, as incompatible cables can cause damage.
    • Indoor Use Only: The power supply is designed exclusively for indoor use.
    • Intended Purpose: Any use outside its intended purpose or failure to comply with manufacturer instructions will void all warranties and guarantees.
  • Technical Support & RMA: For technical support, users can fill out a contact form on the manufacturer's website. For RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) requests, users should contact the original place of purchase via email or phone. These channels ensure that users can receive professional assistance for any issues or defects, contributing to the overall maintainability and support of the product.
