Do you have a question about the Gardol GBW 53 RE and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the GBW 53 RE, a pedestrian-controlled lawnmower manufactured by GGP Italy S.p.A. This garden motor device is designed for cutting and collecting grass in gardens and grassy areas, with a cutting capacity suited to its power. The operator walks behind the handle, maintaining a safe distance from the rotating cutting means. The engine and cutting means stop within a few seconds if the operator moves away from the machine.

Function Description:

The GBW 53 RE lawnmower is primarily composed of an engine that drives a cutting means enclosed in a casing, equipped with wheels and a handle. It offers various mowing modes:

  • Collecting: Mowing grass and collecting it in the grass catcher.
  • Rear Discharge: Mowing grass and discharging it onto the ground from the rear.
  • Mulching: Mowing, chopping, and depositing the grass onto the ground as a fine mulch, eliminating the need for collection. This mode is available with an optional mulching kit.
  • Side Discharge: Mowing grass and discharging it sideways. This feature is available on suitably equipped machines.

The machine is intended for use by consumers, i.e., non-professional operators, for "DIY" or hobby use. Improper use, such as transporting people or animals, using it as a transport vehicle, towing or pushing loads, collecting leaves or debris, trimming hedges or non-grass vegetation, or operating the cutting means on non-grass surfaces, is prohibited and can be dangerous.

Important Technical Specifications:

The technical data for the GBW 53 RE (MP1 554 Series) includes:

  • Rated Power: 2.27 ÷ 3.30 kW
  • Max. Motor Operating Speed: 2800 ± 100 ÷ 2900 ± 100 min⁻¹
  • Machine Weight: 35 ÷ 43 kg
  • Cutting Width: 53 cm
  • Acoustic Pressure Level: 84 dB(A) (Measurement uncertainty: 0.6 dB(A))
  • Measured Acoustic Power Level: 98 dB(A) (Measurement uncertainty: 0.5 dB(A))
  • Guaranteed Acoustic Power Level: 98 dB(A)
  • Vibration Level: 7.5 m/s² (Measurement uncertainty: 2.2 m/s²)

  • Grass Catcher Capacity: 57.6 liters

For specific data, refer to the machine's identification label.

Usage Features:

Before operating, users must read the instruction manual carefully and familiarize themselves with the controls and proper machine use. It is crucial to learn how to stop the engine quickly.

  • Handle Assembly: The handle can be assembled in different types (I, II, or III) and its height can be adjusted. It is fastened to the chassis side supports using knobs/handwheels and screws. The starter cable is inserted into a spiral and tightened.
  • Grass Catcher Assembly: The grass catcher frame is inserted into the bag, and plastic profiles are snapped into place with a screwdriver.
  • Battery Connection (if applicable): For electric start models, the battery cable is connected to the lawnmower's main wiring harness. For push-button electric start models, follow the engine instruction manual.
  • Throttle Lever: Controls the engine speed. Some models may have a fixed-speed engine without a throttle.
  • Engine Brake Lever / Cutting Means: This lever must be held against the handle during ignition and operation. Releasing it stops the engine.
  • Drive Lever (if applicable): On power-driven models, pushing this lever towards the handle engages forward movement. Releasing it stops the lawnmower. The engine must always be ignited with the drive disengaged. Avoid pulling the machine backward with the drive engaged to prevent transmission damage.
  • Converter Control Lever (if fitted): Regulates forward gear speed on drive-system models. Speed changes should be made with the engine running and the drive engaged. Do not touch the converter control when the engine is off.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: The cutting height is adjusted using a specific lever or by pressing a button and lifting/lowering the chassis. This operation must always be performed with the cutting means stationary and the engine off.
  • Mowing Operations: All mowing preparations (e.g., attaching the grass catcher, mulching kit, or side discharge chute) must be done with the engine off.
    • Collecting: Lift the rear discharge guard and attach the grass catcher.
    • Rear Discharge: Remove the grass catcher and ensure the rear discharge guard remains lowered. For models with side discharge, ensure the side discharge guard is lowered.
    • Mulching: For models with side discharge, ensure the side discharge guard is lowered. Lift the rear discharge guard and insert the chute cap, slightly tilted to the right, securing it with pins until the fastener tooth clicks into place.
    • Side Discharge: Lift the rear discharge guard, insert the chute cap, then insert the side discharge chute and close the side discharge guard to lock it.
  • Engine Ignition: Follow the instructions in the engine manual. For manual start, pull the brake lever against the handle and firmly tug the starter rope. For electric key start, pull the brake lever and turn the ignition key. For push-button electric start, insert the consent key, pull the brake lever, press and hold the ignition button until the engine starts.
  • Mowing the Lawn: For best results, mow at the same height in alternating directions. Empty the grass catcher when full. Avoid removing large quantities of grass (no more than one-third of total grass height per pass) in mulching or rear discharge modes. For side discharge, mow in a pattern that avoids discharging cut grass onto uncut areas.
  • Lawn Care: Different grass types require different care. Always refer to seed package instructions for mowing height. Avoid cutting wet grass or cutting too low. For very high grass, perform an initial cut at maximum height, followed by a second cut after two or three days.
  • End of Work: Release the brake lever and disconnect the spark plug cap. For electric start models, remove the ignition key or consent key. Always wait for the cutting means to stop before any intervention.

Maintenance Features:

Regular and thorough maintenance, at least once a year, is essential to maintain the machine's safety and original performance. All adjustments or maintenance operations must be performed with the engine off and the spark plug cable disconnected.

  • Safety Precautions: Always wear sturdy work gloves for cleaning, maintenance, or adjustments.
  • Cleaning: After each cut, thoroughly wash the machine with water to remove grass debris and mud from the chassis, preventing it from drying and hindering future starts.
  • Chassis Paint: If the internal chassis paint flakes due to abrasive action of cut grass, promptly touch up with rust-proof paint to prevent corrosion.
  • Accessing the Underside: If accessing the lower part, tilt the machine only to the side indicated in the engine manual, ensuring stability. For side discharge models, remove the discharge chute if installed.
  • Fuel Handling: Avoid spilling petrol on plastic parts of the engine or machine. Clean up any spills immediately. Warranty does not cover damage to plastic parts caused by petrol.
  • Engine Oil: Regularly change the engine oil according to the intervals specified in the engine manual. Oil can be drained at a specialized service center or suctioned out with a syringe. Ensure oil level is restored before reuse.
  • Cutting Means Maintenance: All interventions on the cutting means (sharpening, balancing, replacement) must be performed by a specialized service center with appropriate tools and expertise. Always wear work gloves when handling the cutting means.
  • Converter Cable Adjustment (if fitted): Adjust if the lever tends not to stay in the "idle" position. This adjustment is done by turning the cable adjuster with the engine off.
  • Battery Recharging (if applicable): For electric start models, connect a discharged battery to a battery charger following the maintenance manual. Do not connect the charger directly to the engine terminal. If storing for a long period, disconnect the battery from the engine wiring, ensuring it is well charged.
  • Internal Cleaning: Connect a water hose to the fitting, lower the cutting height to the lowest position, stand behind the handle, and start the engine.

Accessories:

Only manufacturer-approved attachments designed for the specific model and type of machine should be used.

  • Mulching Kit (if not supplied): This kit finely chops cut grass and leaves it on the lawn, as an alternative to collecting it in the grass catcher.
