Overview

The Garner HD-2XT Series is a line of continuous-duty capacitive discharge degaussers designed to effectively eliminate data from hard drives and tape cartridges. These devices are manufactured by Garner Products, Inc., a world leader in data elimination, and are designed for ease of use and reliable performance in various professional settings.

Function Description

The primary function of the HD-2XT Series degaussers is to permanently erase data from magnetic media, such as hard drives (laptop, standard, and network drives up to 1.25 inches in height) and various tape formats (LTO, DLT, AIT, 2590 Series, 8mm, and others). This is achieved through a process called degaussing, where a powerful magnetic field is generated to disrupt the magnetic domains on the storage media, rendering the data unreadable and unrecoverable. The degaussers operate with a nominal magnetic field of 1 Tesla (10,000 Gauss), ensuring a thorough and effective erasure.

The degaussing process is largely automatic once initiated. Users simply place the media into the device's media drawer, close the drawer, and the unit handles the rest. The system includes an LCD display that provides real-time status updates, including the manufacturer name, degausser model, current firmware version, total erasing cycles, and instructions for the user. This display guides the user through each step of the degaussing cycle, from power-up to cycle completion.

For DLT media, a specific two-pass degaussing procedure is recommended. While the data is completely degaussed in one operation, a second pass with the tape rotated 90 degrees is required to smooth out any magnetic fluctuation. This prevents potential issues such as the tape drive ejecting the tape or indicating that the tape needs cleaning.

Usage Features

The HD-2XT Series degaussers are designed with user-friendliness and safety in mind.

  • Controls and Indicators: The device features a prominent red POWER button for switching the unit on and off. The media drawer is central to its operation, holding the media to be degaussed and activating/deactivating the degaussing cycle when opened and closed. The LCD display is a key interface, providing status, automatic count, total count, software version, field strength, user instructions, and fault messages.
  • Automatic Degaussing Cycle: The degaussing process is streamlined into three main steps:
    1. Power On: Pressing the POWER button initiates the system, displaying manufacturer, model, and firmware information.
    2. Insert Media: The LCD indicates "Ready" for media. Users open the media drawer, insert the media, and close the drawer. Closing the drawer automatically starts the erase cycle, and the display shows capacitor charging status.
    3. Remove Media: Once the cycle is complete, the LCD indicates "Cycle Complete" and "Drawer Open Ready." Users open the drawer and remove the now-erased media.
  • Safety Features: The manual emphasizes several critical safety notes. It warns against opening the unit due to high voltage and the absence of operator-serviceable parts, requiring maintenance by trained personnel only. It also advises using only Garner-approved power cords and replacing fuses with those of the same type and rating. Airflow is crucial, so ventilation slots must not be blocked. Pace Maker users are advised to consult their physician due to stray magnetic fields.
  • Installation: The degausser should be placed on a flat, hard surface, maintaining at least a 15 cm (6 inch) distance from any objects that might interfere with the cooling fan exhaust located on the backside of the unit. Proper cooling is maintained by forced air-cooling, and ensuring unblocked airflow is essential for safe operating temperatures.
  • Error Handling: The LCD display provides specific error codes to assist users in troubleshooting.
    • Charge Error: Indicates the degausser failed to charge to the required power level. The action is to turn the degausser off for one minute and restart.
    • Gauss Error: Indicates the erasing field may not have been adequate. The action is similar: turn off the degausser for one minute, restart, then open and close the media drawer to re-initiate the cycle.
    • Media Drawer Open Error: Indicates the media drawer is not completely closed. The action is to check that the drawer is seated in its detent.
    • Overheat Error: Indicates the internal temperature has risen to a harmful level. The degausser will inhibit further operation until it cools down. Users should leave the degausser powered on so the chassis fan can aid in cooling.

Maintenance Features

While the HD-2XT Series is designed for continuous duty, specific maintenance tasks are limited to trained personnel due to the internal high voltage and lack of operator-serviceable parts. However, the manual provides guidelines for ensuring the longevity and proper functioning of the device.

  • Cooling System: The forced air-cooling system is vital for maintaining safe operating temperatures. Users are instructed to ensure that the air-intake and exhaust vents are not blocked and that adequate clearance (at least 15 cm or 6 inches) is maintained around the back of the degausser. This passive maintenance ensures the cooling system operates effectively.
  • Troubleshooting via LCD Errors: The LCD error codes serve as a diagnostic tool, guiding users or technicians to identify and address common issues. For persistent errors, contacting customer support is recommended.
  • Shipping and Packaging: Users are advised to retain all original shipping materials for future use. In the event that the unit needs to be transported for repair or to a different location, proper packaging is crucial to prevent freight damage, which could void the factory warranty. Garner Products, Inc. can be contacted for further information on packaging and shipping.
  • Disposal: At the end of its useful service life, the machine should be disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. Users are instructed not to dispose of the machine or its packaging with household trash.

The HD-2XT Series is a robust and reliable solution for secure data elimination, backed by Garner Products, Inc.'s commitment to quality and customer support.
