Overview

This document provides installation instructions and important information for GE Appliances Ductless Multi-Zone Heat Pump Systems with High-Wall Indoor Units.

Function Description:

The GE Appliances Ductless Multi-Zone Heat Pump System is designed to provide heating and cooling for residential and light commercial applications. It consists of an outdoor unit and multiple high-wall indoor units, allowing for individualized temperature control in different zones. The system utilizes R-410A refrigerant, a safe, non-toxic, and non-flammable refrigerant. It operates as a heat pump, capable of both cooling and heating, with specific operating ranges depending on the model.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Operating Range (Cooling): 14°F to 115°F (for all models: ASH218JCDDA, ASH324JCDDA, ASH436JCDDA, ASH220NCDDA, ASH324NCDDA, ASH436NCDDA, ASH542JCDDA).
  • Operating Range (Heating):
    • ASH218JCDDA / ASH324JCDDA / ASH436JCDDA: -4°F to 75°F
    • ASH220NCDDA / ASH324NCDDA / ASH436NCDDA / ASH542JCDDA: -15°F to 75°F
  • Refrigerant: R-410A.
  • Rated Power Supply: 208/230 VAC/60Hz/1PH. Voltage must be within 187-253V range.
  • Wiring: 14/4 AWG stranded copper wire is required for electrical connections between indoor and outdoor units. A dedicated circuit breaker matching the heat pump's capacity is necessary.
  • Line Set Sizes: Vary by indoor unit model (refer to compatibility matrix for specific requirements). Common sizes include 1/4" liquid and 3/8" vapor lines for 7K, 9K, and 12K models; 1/4" liquid and 1/2" vapor lines for 18K models; and 3/8" liquid and 5/8" vapor lines or 1/4" liquid and 1/2" vapor lines for 24K models, potentially requiring adapters.
  • Flare Connection Torque:
    • 1/4" (6.35mm): 18N.m/13.3Ft.lbs
    • 3/8" (9.52mm): 42N.m/30.1Ft.lbs
    • 1/2" (12.7mm): 55N.m/40.6Ft.lbs
    • 5/8" (15.88mm): 60 N.m/44.3Ft.lbs
  • Refrigerant Charge: Factory charge varies by model and total line set length. Additional R-410A charge (0.2 oz/ft) is required for line sets exceeding the factory charge length.
  • Maximum Branch Pipe Length: 82 ft for most models, 65 ft for ASH218JCDDA.
  • Maximum System Pipe Length: Varies by model, e.g., 98 ft (ASH218JCDDA) to 262 ft (ASH542JCDDA).
  • Minimum Pipe Length: 10 ft per indoor unit.
  • Condensate Drain: Requires a constant downward pitch of at least 1/4" per foot for proper drainage.
  • Outdoor Unit Clearances: Minimum clearances are specified for front, back, sides, and above the unit, varying based on installation type (single unit, multiple units, with barriers). For example, 40" (1000mm) above, 10" (250mm) to the back, and 12" (300mm) to the sides for a single unit.
  • Indoor Unit Clearances: Minimum 4" from the ceiling and 4" from the sides.

Usage Features:

  • Preprogrammed System Check: Upon initial power-up, the system displays "CC" and is ready for a preprogrammed system test. This test runs for 18-25 minutes, cycling through heating and cooling modes to verify proper operation. A "PS" display indicates successful completion. Alternatively, the test can be bypassed by setting the indoor mode to "Dry" and temperature to 68°F (20°C), which will display "BP" for 5 seconds before entering standby mode.
  • Turbo Mode: Recommended for optimal capacity and efficiency at 5°F (-15°C) and below.
  • Secondary Heating Source: Recommended in regions where temperatures frequently drop below the system's operating range.
  • Remote Controller: Used to set modes, temperatures, and fan speeds.
  • Multi-Zone Control: Allows for independent control of multiple indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit.

Maintenance Features:

  • Air Filter Cleaning: The indoor unit location should provide easy access for removing and cleaning air filters.
  • Routine Maintenance Access: Sufficient space around the indoor and outdoor units is required for routine maintenance.
  • Leak Testing: After line set installation, a leak test using dry nitrogen at increasing pressures (150 psig, 300 psig, 500 psig) is mandatory for each line set. Soap bubbles or a detection device are used to identify leaks.
  • System Evacuation: The system must be evacuated to at least 350 microns using a vacuum pump and micron gauge before opening service valves.
  • Refrigerant Charging: Additional R-410A refrigerant must be added after evacuation if the line set length exceeds the factory charge length, using a digital scale and charging with liquid refrigerant.
  • Wiring Check Test: A diagnostic test can be performed by setting all dip switches in the SW1 bank to ON. This test cycles through each indoor unit, checking wiring and communication. Green LEDs indicate successful communication, while flashing green LEDs indicate mis-wired units.
  • Condensate Management: For ASH220NCDDA, ASH324NCDDA, ASH436NCDDA, ASH436JCDDA, & ASH542JCDDA models, a 3rd party pan is needed if condensate management is required by code, as these models do not use a drain elbow.
  • Seaside Installation: Specific instructions for installations near saltwater bodies, including minimum distance (1/2 mile), protection from marine breeze, and construction of solid protective walls (1.5 times unit size, 28" clearance).
  • Cold Climate Installation: Recommendations for installing a windbreak cover and/or snow protection hood for outdoor units in regions with strong winds or heavy snowfall.
