Home Standby Remote Start Kit
Model No. G0071090
Purpose
This kit enables activation of a remote start feature. The remote start feature exists on ALL home standby
generators with a controller fitted with an LCD screen. Units without an LCD screen do NOT have remote start
capability, except for the PowerPact™ generators.
NOTE: EcoGen™ units are equipped with two wire start, so this kit is not required. CorePower units do not have an
LCD screen on the controller, so the kit is not applicable. This kit should not be used with off-grid applications—doing
so could void the warranty.
The feature is contained within the LCD screen units and is enabled via a password. The option to enable remote start
is found under the Edit menu. This menu allows the ability to scroll through various parameters and change them. Once
they are changed, they will be remembered even when the power is removed.
Remote Starter Kit Contents
NOTE: The kits contain different wire types, based on the mating connector lugs. Some kits contain spare wires.
Evolution Controllers
1. Turn utility MLCB to OFF or Open.

4. Remove the 7.5 Amp fuse from the top of the control panel.
5. Remove the generator front panel.
6. Disconnect the negative (-) black lead from the generator battery.
NOTE: The exercise function will need to be reset every time the 12 volt battery and T1 power to the generator are
disconnected and then reconnected, and/or when the fuse is removed and T1 power is removed from the generator.

Overview

This document describes the Generac Home Standby Remote Start Kit, Model No. G0071090, which enables a remote start feature for Generac home standby generators.

Function Description:

The kit's primary function is to activate a remote start capability for compatible Generac home standby generators. This feature allows the generator to be started remotely, offering convenience and flexibility in managing power supply. The remote start functionality is inherent in all home standby generators equipped with an LCD screen controller. For these units, the kit facilitates the necessary wiring and programming to enable this existing feature. For PowerPact™ generators, which do not have an LCD screen, the kit provides the necessary components and instructions to add remote start capability.

Compatibility:

  • Evolution™ Controllers (with LCD screen): All home standby generators with an LCD screen controller are compatible. The remote start feature is enabled via a password and found under the "Edit" menu.
  • PowerPact™ Controllers: These generators are compatible, and the kit provides the means to add remote start capability.
  • EcoGen™ Units: These units are already equipped with two-wire start and do not require this kit.
  • CorePower™ Units: These units do not have an LCD screen on the controller, making the kit inapplicable.
  • Off-Grid Applications: The kit should not be used for off-grid applications, as doing so may void the warranty.

Important Technical Specifications & Kit Contents:

The kit includes specific wires tailored to the type of controller:

  • For Evolution™ Controllers:
    • Part Number: 0J0973A
    • Wire Color: White
    • Quantity: 3
    • Used With: Evolution™ Controllers
  • For PowerPact™ Controllers:
    • Part Numbers: 0J0973C, 0J0973D, 0J0973E
    • Wire Color: Dark Blue
    • Quantity: 1 each
    • Used With: PowerPact™ Controller

The kits may contain different wire types based on the mating connector lugs, and some kits include spare wires.

Usage Features:

For Evolution™ Controllers:

  1. Initial Setup: Requires turning the utility MLCB (Main Line Circuit Breaker) to OFF or Open, unlocking and opening the generator lid, and setting the generator switch to OFF.
  2. Wiring Installation: Involves removing the 7.5 Amp fuse and the generator front panel, then disconnecting the negative (-) black lead from the battery. Two white wires (0J0973A) are inserted into specific open locations on the J1 and J2 connectors (either J1-5 and J2-11 for Evolution 1.0, or J1-18 and J2-10 for Evolution 2.0). These wires are then connected to the start switch.
  3. Reassembly: After wiring, the J1 and J2 harness connectors are reinstalled, the negative (-) black lead is reconnected to the battery, the generator front panel is installed, and the 7.5 Amp fuse is reinstalled. The generator is left in OFF mode.
  4. Programming:
    • Ensure battery leads are connected, the 7.5 Amp fuse is installed, and the generator switch is OFF.
    • Access the menu screen by pressing the ESCAPE key.
    • Enter a specific password sequence: UP, UP, ESCAPE, DOWN, UP, ESCAPE, UP.
    • Navigate through the SUB MENU, DEALER, and DEALER-EDIT fields using arrow keys.
    • Scroll to "2 WIRE START SELECT" and press ENTER.
    • Change the display to "YES" using arrow keys.
    • Press ENTER to store the data, enabling remote start.
    • Turn utility MLCB to ON or Closed.
    • Place the generator switch in AUTO mode.
    • Verify proper functioning of the two-wire start.

For PowerPact™ Controllers:

  1. Initial Setup: Requires turning the utility MLCB to OFF or Open, opening the controller/circuit breaker cover, and setting the generator to OFF mode.
  2. Disassembly: Remove and retain the 7.5 Amp ATO® fuse. Remove four fasteners from the top cover and lift it. Remove two fasteners and the battery access panel. Disconnect the black (-) negative lead from the battery.
  3. Wiring Installation: Unplug the 20-pin wire harness connector (J5). Insert the crimp end of wire #0 (0J0973E) into location 3 on J5, and connect the ring terminal end to the ground screw on the rear of the customer connection box. Insert the crimp end of wire #183 (0J0973D) into location 7 on J5, and connect the other end to the start switch. Plug the harness connector back into J5. Connect the ring terminal end of wire #178 (0J0973C) to the ground screw on the rear of the connection box, and connect the other end to the start switch.
  4. Reassembly: Reconnect the black (-) negative lead to the battery. Install the battery access panel and tighten fasteners. Install the enclosure's top cover and tighten fasteners. Install the 7.5 Amp ATO® fuse.
  5. Final Steps: Turn utility MLCB to ON or Closed. Press the AUTO button to place the generator in AUTO mode. Verify proper functioning of the two-wire start.

Maintenance Features:

  • Exercise Function Reset: It is important to note that the exercise function will need to be reset every time the 12-volt battery and T1 power to the generator are disconnected and then reconnected, and/or when the fuse is removed and T1 power is removed from the generator. This ensures the generator's automatic exercise schedule is properly maintained after any power interruptions or maintenance.
  • Password Persistence (Evolution Controllers): Once the password for programming is entered and the "EDIT" screen is accessed, the password will be canceled upon exiting that screen. It can be re-entered again if necessary for future adjustments. The changes made to parameters, however, are remembered even when power is removed.
